PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Evangelical Lutheran Synod NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD CHURCH STAFF Pastor Hartwig: 507-382-6826 Email: pastorhartwig@gmail.com Pastor Moldstad: 507-382-0045 Email: pastormoldstad@gmail.com Church Office: 507-385-1386 JESUS LAMBS AT PEACE PRESCHOOL Teacher/Director: Joslyn Moldstad Phone: 507-385-7752 Email: joslynmoldstad@gmail.com Church website: Peacemankato.com Email: karen@peacemankato.com APRIL 14, 2019 Divine Service Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 AM 2 SIXTH SUNDAY IN LENT PALM SUNDAY WELCOME TO PEACE! The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY We praise You, O God, for the great acts of love by which You have redeemed us through Your Son, Jesus Christ. As He was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in His path, so may we always hail Him as our King and follow Him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

PALM SUNDAY 1 DIVINE SERVICE WITH HOLY COMMUNION INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. PROCESSION WITH PALMS P: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord s paschal mystery. Today we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ entered in triumph into his own city to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the empty tomb and follow him with a lively faith. United with him by Baptism, we share in his resurrection and new life. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! (All children are invited to gather in the church entry for the procession with palms. The group will be led by Pastor Moldstad through the church waving their palms in joyous celebration during the hymn.) HYMN #279 HOSANNA, LOUD HOSANNA When all have reached their places, the minister stands at the front and says: P: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! 1 Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter. On this day, Jesus, accompanied by His disciples, entered the city of Jerusalem in triumph (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:29-44; and John 12:12-19). An enthusiastic crowd greeted Jesus by spreading palm branches along the road and shouting Hosanna, a Hebrew expression meaning "save us." The throng hailed Jesus as the "Son of David," the Messiah promised long ago by God. Services on Palm Sunday traditionally begin with a joyful procession into the sanctuary. Worshipers often carry palm leaves or wear crosses made of palm. 3

SUNDAY SCHOOL LAMB OF GOD WE FALL BEFORE YOU 1. Lamb of God, we fall before You, humbly trusting in Your cross. Our great joy is to adore You; all things else are only dross. Refrain: Come you nations, sing you saved! Jesus Christ has brought salvation Won the vict'ry o'er the grave. 2. Jesus is the perfect Savior, only source of all that's good; Ev'ry grace and ev'ry favor come to us through Jesus' blood. Refrain 3. Jesus gives us true repentance by His Spirit sent from heav'n. Whispers this assuring sentence "All your sins are now forgiv'n." Refrain 4. All our prayers and all our praises, rightly offered in His name He that asks for them Is Jesus; He that answers is the same. Refrain. Text: Joseph Hart 1712-1768 Refrain: Chris Christenson Reprinted under OneLicense.net A-721927. THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Fellow worshipers, as Christ entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday to complete His redeeming work as our Messiah, we follow Him with living faith in our special services today, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. United with Him in our baptisms, let us now, as Luther describes it, drown our sinful Old Adam by true contrition and repentance. And may the Holy Spirit prompt in us that the New Man arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever: C: Heavenly Father, I confess that I am, by nature, dead in sin. For faithless worrying and selfish pride, for sins of habit and sins of choice, for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do, for conscious sins and ignorant sins against Your good will, Your righteous justice should cast me aside from Your presence forever. O Lord, I repent of my sins. Forgive me and renew me for the sake of Jesus Your Son, my only Savior. P: God our Heavenly Father, in His amazing and compassionate mercy to us, gave His only Son to deliver us by becoming the sacrificial payment for our sins. To Him we rightly cry, Hosanna! Save us! Now He bids His Church to preach forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation to all who come with humble, repentant hearts. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ, and acting in His behalf with the authority He gave to His 4

Church on earth, I assure you of the forgiveness of all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son ( ), and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY THE LESSON ZECHARIAH 9:9-10 9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! Look! Your King is coming to you. He is righteous and brings salvation. He is humble and is riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem. The battle bow will be taken away, and he will proclaim peace to the nations. His kingdom will extend from sea to sea, from the River to the ends of the earth. RESPONSE VERSE #277:1 ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR THE EPISTLE PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 5 Indeed, let this attitude be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. 6 Though he was by nature God, he did not consider equality with God as a prize to be displayed, 7 but he emptied himself by taking the nature of a servant. When he was born in human likeness, and his appearance was like that of any other man, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. RESPONSE VERSE #277:2 ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR THE HOLY GOSPEL LUKE 19:28-40 P: The Holy Gospel for the Sixth Sunday in Lent Palm Sunday is written in the 19 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Luke, beginning at the 28 th verse. 28 After Jesus had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he came near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples ahead, 30 saying, Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it 5

here. 31 And if anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? you will say this: The Lord needs it. 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found things just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 They said, The Lord needs it. 35 Then they brought the colt to Jesus. They threw their robes on the colt and set Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their robes on the road. 37 As he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began to praise God joyfully, with a loud voice, for all the miracles they had seen, 38 saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! 39 Some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, Teacher, rebuke your disciples! 40 He replied, I tell you, if these people would be silent, the stones would cry out. RESPONSE VERSE #277:3 ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: C: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, Begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, By Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; and the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures; and ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; 6

And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the Prophets. And I believe one holy Christian and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, And I look for the Resurrection of the dead and the Life of the world to come. HYMN #280 RIDE ON, RIDE ON, IN MAJESTY THE SERMON LUKE 19:28-40 THE STONES WOULD CRY OUT THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE APOSTOLIC BENEDICTION P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. THE OFFERING The members of Peace Lutheran Congregation have joined together to do the Lord s work in this community and around the world. Visitors need not feel obligated to participate in this offering which supports our ministry. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it. (Malachi 3:10) PLEASE FILL OUT THE FRIENDSHIP REGISTER 7

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Peace Lutheran Church practices close communion. We ask that only members of the ELS and WELS partake of the Sacrament today. Visitors, please speak to the Pastor about receiving the Sacrament in the future. THE PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. P: Lift up your hearts unto the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. 8

THE PROPER PREFACE AND SANCTUS P: It is truly good, right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God; On the tree of the cross You gave salvation to all mankind that, whence death arose, by the fault of one man, thence also life might arise by the obedience of one man; and that even as Satan once overcame by a tree, likewise by a tree he was overcome, through the death of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: THE SANCTUS (HOLY, HOLY, HOLY) 9

THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. THE AGNUS DEI (LAMB OF GOD) 10

THE DISTRIBUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMN #276 WHEN O ER MY SINS I SORROW #278 O JESUS, KING MOST WONDERFUL #293 O WHAT PRECIOUS BALM AND HEALING THE COLLECT OF THANKSGIVING P: Let us give thanks and pray: We thank You, Lord God Almighty, that You have refreshed us with these Your salutary gifts; and we beseech You of Your mercy, to strengthen us through the same in faith toward You, and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord. THE BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. THE CLOSING HYMN #277:4-5 ALL GLORY, LAUD, AND HONOR 12
