Parish News Religious Education Today we are celebrating all those who are handing on the faith. Catechesis comes from the Greek meaning to echo. Those catechist who, by their words and action serve by echoing the words of Jesus. In the truest sense of the word, all of us by our baptism are called to echo the faith to all we meet. On Catechetical Sunday we call forward and rededicate those who formally take on the role of catechist. Those recognized today are teachers, R.E. catechists, SPRED catechists, SPA leaders, Youth Ministers, and Children s Liturgy of the Word catechists. As we dedicate these treasures of our community, may we be reminded of our own responsibility to echo the faith every day. Due to large class enrollment in both 1 st and 6 th grade on Sunday, we are still looking for additional catechists to open another class to these students. Please call to help out. You are needed! Because of Catechetical Sunday, we will not hold classes this week. However, classes resume next week, September 25th and 27th at the usual time and place. Bible Study with Fr. Simon Join Fr. Dear Parishioners, It is part of the Archdiocesan policy that all ac ve priests par cipate in a review process approximately every 5 years. This is the first Parish-wide review of my ministry since I was incardinated into the Archdiocese of Chicago almost five years ago. Your par cipa on in this review process would help my growth both as a person and a priest. This process should not take more than 30 minutes of your me. The survey can be completed by accessing the following link through the parish website under Fr. Simon Evalua on h ps://www.surveymonkey.com/r/late-summer-2016 If you do not have access to a computer, there are printed copies of the Parish-wide survey at the exits. Please fill them out and mail it to the archdiocese. Please see Bishop Kane s le er on the opposite page. Thank you very much for your par cipa on, Fr. Parish News WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 43 The pace of life is so rapid that it's hard for most people to find the time to reflect on some of the more important concerns in their lives. One of these concerns is what do we really believe. When Jesus tells Martha, after he raised her brother from the dead, that he is the resurrection and the life; he then asks her, "Do you believe this?" That question is meant for us all. It echoes in each one of our hearts. A vital part of every Sunday Mass is the public declaration of what we believe. It's called the Creed. It expresses the very basics of our faith, the fundamentals of what we share in common. By praying the Creed together aloud at Sunday Mass we restate what we truly believe so that we can hear ourselves, others can hear us and we can hear others. WWW.QASPARISH.ORG Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. John Pollard RCIA Inquiry Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The RCIA is a process for those considering becoming Catholic. Specifically, it is: For those who are not baptized and are in the process of making a decision to become Catholic For those who were baptized and are in another faith and are thinking of becoming Catholic For those who were baptized Roman Catholic and have not received Eucharist and Confirmation The process is designed to assist those interested in Catholicism, to learn about our faith, our traditions, and our celebrations. Each person is invited to reflect on his/her own relationship with God and the faith community. We journey through this process together, assisting each other in our response to God s call. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in the RCIA, please call Fr. Simon Braganza at (773) 736-6060, ext. 239 for more information. Classes are on Thursday evenings beginning in September. Call for more information: (773) 736-6060 8 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

Catholic Heart Work Camp in Chicago From July 24 to July 28, five teenage boys and their adult leader, Mr. Couzins, went on a mission trip not far from home. We, along with 270 other people from around the country, stayed at De La Salle Institute in the Douglas neighborhood of Chicago. From Sunday to Thursday, we were split up into many different groups those groups went to different worksites all around the south side of Chicago. During the day we worked, and during the evening we had Mass and fun programs with all the campers. Our group from QAS helped the less fortunate, especially those who live in our own city. The camp was an all around success and it is a great way to help others and meet new people. ~Sergio Rodriguez, sophomore Bereavement Support Group The grieving process assaults us physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually and socially, and the time of grieving is different for everyone. f tewardship Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - September 18, 2016 Planned Giving Direct Contributions From Your IRA If you are 70½ or older and have an IRA, you may qualify for a charitable giving opportunity directly from your IRA. Individuals are now allowed to make direct transfers from an IRA to Queen of All Saints tax free up to $100,000 and also credited against your required annual minimum distribution if you have not yet taken it. The tax-free nature of this withdrawal may have a number of other favorable benefits affecting your tax return, depending on your particular situation. Please contact our parish business office at 773-736-6060 for further information. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, talent and treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. No servant can serve two masters. He will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (wealth). - Luke 16:13 Is money a god that you put before God? Giving money to support the Church and other charity is a pillar of our Faith, just like attending Mass every Sunday and participating in parish ministry. Giving money frees us from being a slave to money and increases our dependence on God and to trust that He will provide all that we need. Some of our fellow parishioners find getting to Church difficult or even impossible. QAS Ministers of Care are ready and willing to connect our homebound sisters and brothers to the parish celebration of Mass on Sundays. The ministers are blessed at the 9:30 Mass and sent forth to bring Holy Communion to those who can t be with us due to illness or injury or age. If you know of someone - a neighbor, friend, relative - who cannot join us for Sunday Mass, please let them know we want to connect with them! All they need to do is call the Rectory to be put on the list for a visit. It s far greater than any social media - for we bring the Lord himself and a connection to the QAS community of faith. Any questions? Call Carole Eipers at the Rectory, 773-736-6060, ext. 232. Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 11

If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 18, 2016 13
