LEWINSVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH MAUNDY THURSDAY MARCH 29, 2018 GOOD FRIDAY MARCH 30, 2018 THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER MARCH 31, 2018

WELCOME. We re glad to be together as a community of faith through Holy Week. This week we journey with Jesus to the cross and empty tomb. From the upper room where Jesus shared the last supper with his disciples, to the garden of Gethsemane, to his trial before Pilate, to Golgotha where Jesus was crucified, to the garden tomb we journey into the deepest mysteries of God s love for us in Jesus Christ. This journey and these mysteries are at the center of our Christian faith. Theologians seek words to explain these mysteries. Yet at times we do best to simply live into them. So we gather this week to journey with Jesus and live more deeply into the mystery of his passion, death and resurrection. Please turn off all cellular phones and watch alarms during worship. Please refrain from using flash photography during the worship service. Maundy Thursday March 29, 2018 7:30 p.m. * If you are able, please stand Latecomers seated G ATHERING PRELUDE The Glory of These Forty Days Robert Powell * CALL TO WORSHIP In the growing darkness we gather. Our Lenten journey has brought us here. Jesus, our Teacher and Lord, sets before us, a towel, a bowl, bread, a cup. He gives us an example and a commandment ever new: John 13:34-35 to love one another as he has loved us. This is how everyone will know we are his disciples, when we love each other. * HYMN An Upper Room Did Our Lord Prepare GG 202 O WALY WALY CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION silence Holy God, call us to serve others as Christ serves. We confess that we have not followed Christ s example as fully or as often as we could. We turn away from people in need. True humility eludes us. We hide our vulnerabilities. You commanded that we love one another as you have loved us. We confess that we do not love so generously. Gathered on this Holy Thursday, we confess that we are capable of denying and betraying you and one another, no less than the first disciples. Forgive us, merciful God, and cleanse us from our sin. In Christ s name we pray. Amen. 1

DECLARATION OF PARDON Friends, hear and believe the good news that comes from God. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! * CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE (Where we find love and charity, God is there) GG 205 Ubi caritas et amour, UBI CARITAS Ubi caritas Deus ibi est. * THE PEACE The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. And also with you. Greet those around you, saying Peace be with you or The Peace of Christ. If you prefer not to shake hands in greeting while passing the Peace of Christ, you may choose to make eye contact and greet others in another personal way. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION T HE W ORD SCRIPTURE Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19 OT p. 564 John 13:1-17, 31b-35 NT p. 107 THE FOOT WASHING PRAYER FOR THE BLESSING OF WATER FOR WASHING Loving God, as Jesus took a basin and poured the water long ago, we bring these basins of water before you. Bless this water for washing, and bless the feet of your servants, too. Wash away the stains and strains of this life, that we may walk anew in the ways of Christ. In true humility, we bend our lives in service to you. Help us all, by your example, to understand more deeply how we are meant to serve rather than be served, for love s sake. In Christ we pray. Amen. If you wish to participate in the foot washing, please come forward to one of the three stations. You may take your shoes and socks off before you come forward. Sit in the chair and have your feet washed. After your feet have been washed, then wash the feet of the next person. You may then return to your seat. For those who remain in their seats please join in the hymn singing. HYMNS Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love GG 203 CHEREPONI Will You Let Me Be Your Servant GG 727 THE SERVANT SONG 2

SCRIPTURE 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 NT p. 173 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! SERMON Footsteps of Love Rev. Emily Berman D Andrea * AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Philippians 2:5-11 Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess to the glory of God: Jesus Christ is Lord! Amen. T HANKSGIVING THE SHARING OF OUR LIVES THROUGH OUR GIFTS OFFERTORY Ave Verum W. A.
