2nd Sunday of Lent From the Pastor The Second Sunday of Lent In all three years of the lectionary cycle, the Gospel of the Second Sunday of Lent presents us with the mystery of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him and ascended a high mountain. There he was transfigured before them. His face and his clothes became dazzling. Moses and Elijah appeared, conversing with him. Peter, always the impetuous one, offers to make them tents, but they are all overtaken by a bright cloud, where they hear a voice from heaven. The disciples are terrified. Then just as quickly the vision ends. This Gospel story is filled with symbolism. The mountain, of course, recalls Mount Sinai and the Temple Mount where the Jewish people had privileged encounters with God. Moses and Elijah represent the two bodies of Scripture that Jesus and his disciples would have known, namely, the Law and the Prophets. They were in conversation with Jesus, indicating that both the Law and Prophets anticipated him and point to him. The appearance of Elijah fulfilled a prophecy that he would return in the messianic age. The cloud recalls the dedication of the Tent Sanctuary in the wilderness and the dedication of Solomon s Temple. On both of these occasions a great cloud filled the sanctuaries, symbolizing the presence of God s glory. The disciples were terrified, because that is the normal human response to the vision of God s glory. When the vision is over, Jesus told them, Do not be afraid. He stood there alone, a symbol to tell us that he is the ordinary passageway to glory. The traditional interpretation of this incident is that Jesus was preparing his disciples for the scandal of his arrest and execution. He wanted them to remember in the midst of his victimization that he is in fact the glorious Son of God. The real miracle in this story is not that Jesus glory appeared; it that the rest of the time it was hidden. He always existed and exists in glory. Why would he have hidden that from us? The answer to that question goes back to the more fundamental question: why is God invisible? God hides his true beauty and goodness from us because he respects our freedom. If we saw him as he is, he would simply overwhelm us; we would have no choice but to love and worship. But our choice is important to him. He wants us to make it freely. So he makes himself known to us little by little, so that little by little we can become accustomed to him. In Lent this story is an instruction about Baptism. It is not simply the case that God is glorious and hides his glory from us to respect our freedom. More particularly, in Baptism he shares his glory with us. He transforms us by his glory. We become partakers of his divine nature. We become, in Christ, his beloved sons and daughters. Fr. When: Tuesday, March 21st, 2017. Time: 5:30-7:30 PM. Where: Starbucks 9590 Watson Road Crestwood, MO 63126 Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. One of the simplest and most effective forms of evangelization is kindness. When we are pleasant, generous and attentive, we share the love of God in our lives and extend it to others. Christian Hospitality recognizes the value of everyone we encounter as a precious child of God. Being too busy to greet others or inquire about their wellbeing devalues them and us. Haste makes us self-absorbed. We may be the only one to pause and validate that person s existence and dignity. Such moments make it hard to determine who the angel is. Both parties truly benefit from the grace of such encounters. Lord, help me to greet others with you love and hospitality.
