The Beatitudes This is the Year of Matthew at St. Michael. During the Advent and Christmas seasons we looked closely at Matthew 1:1 25 with the theme, Who is Jesus? Now, during the Epiphany Season (January and February), we shine the light on our Savior s Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1 12. Here is the lineup of sermons for the next two months: January 5/6: January 12/13: January 19/20: January 26/27: February 2/3: February 9/10: February 16/17: February 23/24: March 2/3: It s All Over! (Matthew 2:1 23) Blessed Are the Poor in Spirit (Matthew 5:3) Blessed Are Those Who Mourn (Matthew 5:4) Blessed Are the Meek (Matthew 5:5) Blessed Are Those who Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness (Matthew 5:6) Blessed Are the Merciful (Matthew 5:7) Blessed Are the Pure in Heart (Matthew 5:8) Blessed Are the Peacemakers (Matthew 5:9) Blessed Are the Persecuted Because of Righteousness (Matthew 5:10 12) On December 2, my Sunday Morning Adult Bible Study began an in-depth, thirtyweek study of Matthew s Gospel. In January and February we will look at some of the most famous and revolutionary words Jesus ever spoke his Sermon on the Mount, recorded in Matthew 5 7. Matthew invites us to sit and learn at the feet of Jesus. Let s do just that! Pastor Lessing 1

THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY January 27, 2019 Theme of the Day: Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5) We might think that meekness is weakness. Not so! We have much to learn! WELCOME INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP (W=Women, M=Men) P: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. P: Blessed are the poor in spirit W: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. P: Blessed are those who mourn M: For they will be comforted. P: Blessed are the meek All: For they will inherit the earth. P: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness W: For they will be filled. P: Blessed are the merciful M: For they will be shown mercy. P: Blessed are the pure in heart W: For they will see God. P: Blessed are the peacemakers M: For they will be called children of God. P: Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness All: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven! HYMN Blessed Are They (stanzas 1 4) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Our Father, you have called us to practice meekness, but instead we have allowed pride to rear its ugly head in our hearts and in our homes. Hear our confession as we humble ourselves before you. C: We have not lived with each other in kind and compassionate ways. P: We have not earnestly pursued reconciliation and unity. C: We have not dealt with each other with sympathy and humility. P: We have repaid evil for evil, abuse for abuse, insult for insult. 2

ALL: Christ, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us your peace! Please silently reflect on the fact that though our sin is great, Christ s love is greater. P: Jesus, soften our hearts that are so often hard and stubborn, so often unwilling to be reconciled to those we have wounded or who have wounded us. Make our hearts overflow with meekness, bearing with one another in love, forgiving each other for you have reconciled us to the Father and we stand upon this gospel! Blessed are the meek, All: For they shall inherit the earth! HYMN Blessed Are They (stanza 5) PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, you have great regard for the lowly but know the proud from afar. Create in us humble and contrite hearts to trust these words of the Master, Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. We pray in Jesus name. All: Amen. HYMN Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus 685 OPPORTUNITIES OFFERING OFFERTORY 8:00a Jesus Loves Me 10:45a I Am Forever Who I Am ESM Faculty/Harmony Choir PRAYERS P: Heavenly Father, meekness means that we must be quietly dependent upon you; it means that we are in a place of neediness, humility, and waiting. To us, meekness feels like a spiritual word for losing. C: But we are in awe of your Son Jesus, the one who came in gentleness and meekness. P: The one who came riding on a donkey instead of parading on a warhorse. C: The one who ate and drank with sinners rather than jockeying for position with the religious. P: The one who did not consider equality with God something to be grasped but made himself nothing. C: Forgive us for thinking of ourselves more highly than we ought. P: Give us the faith to live simple, humble lives of self-awareness, which leads to a life of meekness. + Additional Prayers + P: Because of your kindness, Father, let the whole world see in us, what we see so clearly in Jesus: profound meekness and strength. In the name of Jesus, we pray. ALL: Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER The 8:00a service concludes on page 6 with the Benediction. 4
