Dear Folks, Everybody stop. Hold the show. Next week brings the great Oktoberfest for St. John the Evangelist parish. It is weeks in the preparation of the many many volunteers that join together. Many are relatives and many good friends, or soon to be. Many are Catholics and a good number from beyond. From the German bands to the favorite funnel cakes from the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department for two days they are all family. Nothing beats Oktoberfest. Let one and all enjoy the gathering. And, please behave. Speaking of enjoying the gathering The Oktoberfest Committee is still looking for more volunteers. You can meet them outside the front doors of the Church after all our Masses this weekend. Please take the time to join in the great events. This event is a nice way for all the parish to meet the new parishioners. And, please, don t come alone. Let spouses bring their better halves. Let fathers bring their sons and mothers their daughters. Oktoberfest offers a great opportunity to show off the next generation. Nothing beats Oktoberfest. Tuesday October 4 th is the Feast of St. Francis. It marks the time for the Blessing of the animals. Come one come all with lions and tigers, and bears. Ok, cats and dogs. We have yet to bless a horse but we once did have a hermit crab. The gathering will take place at 4:00 PM in front of the rectory. If it rains we will join up under the front porch of the school. All are welcome. Heads up for a coming priestly trade off. On the weekend of October 8-9 th Fr. Terry Staples, pastor of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish, Orange, Virginia will come and speak at all the Masses at St. John the Evangelist parish on the importance of the Legion of Mary. Fr. Fimian will, in turn, take all the Masses at St. Isidore s. It should make for an interesting if not inspirational, experience for both parishes. Fr. Fimian will also travel to cover at Our Lady of the Valley Parish, Luray, in the week following his time in Orange. I am sure the folks are going to love having him for the better part of the week offering Father Horkon a chance to break away for a quick retreat. God bless all our priests in their many apostolates reaching out to the needs of our parishioners. Tomorrow marks the kick off for the priests teaching in the grammar school. Fr. Fimian has already been hard at it with the many confessions. He will take the lower grades and I will teach in the upper grades. I am most grateful to Mr. Temple MacDonald, the new principal, in all his support of the priests stopping in to teach. God bless him and our wonderful faculty. They all help to make the parish such a wonderful home. Let us pray for one another. Fr. Fimian just stopped by my room to inform me that Bishop Loverde, coming for Confirmation on the third Wednesday of the month (October in this case) will cause us to bump the monthly Men s Holy Hour to the Fourth Wednesday of October, the 26 th. The future holy hours are scheduled for the third Wednesday of each month, starting at 7:00 PM, with gathering in the rectory for a short repast following the holy hour. The encouraging sign of the monthly holy hour was found in the thirty five men who came for the first gathering. Please note one and all, the weekly holy hours are open to all parishioners, men and women alike. Nothing new in that. It has been a parish devotion for many years and has been a wellspring for the spiritual life of our families. The women in attendance will continue to offer their devotional prayers at the end of the weekly holy hours. Let us pray for one another. This week there will be a bulletin insert on a 24/7 on-line web-based digital formation series called FORMED. Please read and for those that will be reading this on our web site and won t be able to get the insert, please go to Formed.org and enter our parish code WB77KK on the homepage. Collegiate Answer: In anticipation of the Knights of Columbus going to Louisiana, they may meet some interesting creatures of the night alligators and water moccasins. Alligators Live in two places (being that there is only 2 species of alligator) One the American alligator in the Southeastern sector of America (Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida) and the Chinese alligators in well of course, China. Collegiate Question: What is the significance of the Italian Feast for St. Gennaro? And where is the date celebrated? Good hunting Fr. Gould 4

Greetings, I hope all is well with you and your family. A huge thank you to all parents who attended our Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 14. Additionally, PVI will give a presentation to our 8th graders about high school Catholic education as well. I know our faculty and staff look forward to seeing some of our St. John's alumni return to our great school. They always make it back one way or another! The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. YOUNG @ All over 55 are welcome. We meet the first Friday of each month at Mercy Hall at 9:15am. Over the past few weeks, the Youth Ministry kids have been getting to know not just each other, but also ourselves and how we fit into Christ s plan for His Church. One of the things we discussed was service to one another, and how seizing the opportunity to help out our brother and sisters and Christ can help us to become the best versions of ourselves. Speaking of volunteer opportunities our first big one is coming up! The Youth Group has been asked to help man the cotton-candy/popcorn/snow-cone tent for the St. John s 37 th annual Oktoberfest; a wonderful venue that raises funds for the parish and enables hundreds of people to gather together to enjoy fun German Polka music, play games, have their faces hilariously painted, and more. What better way to jump right into parish life? If you are able to volunteer,or woulk like more information, email Ceci Galvin at youthdirector@sje1.org. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering personto-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and patron, St. Vincent de Paul. Organized locally, Vincentians witness God s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing its causes, making no distinction in those served because, in them, Vincentians see the face of Christ.
