The Communicator Knights of Columbus Immaculate Conception Council 11991, Goose Creek, SC Volume 18, Issue 04 Editor: SK Steve Ekhaml, Recorder October, 2015 Table of Contents GK Steven P. Gearhart 1-2 Message from Grand Knight, & Active Military 2 3Note from the Deputy Grand Knight 2- Good of the Order; Birthdays/Anniversaries/Announcements 3 Knight & Family of the Month, Important Reminders 4- District Deputy Comments, Knights in Action, Blood Drive 4-5 Knights in Action, Fraternal Agent Report, First Degree Team 6-7- 3 rd Degree Reminder, Fourth Degree Messages/Calendars 8- List of Officers and Directors Greetings Brother Knights, Have you ever just stopped suddenly and asked yourself what have I done for my fellow man lately? I must admit Council 11991 for the month of September exceeded the expectations of what was asked of them. I reflect back last month when I said the summer is over and it is time for the Council to heat up and that is just what happened. We were honored on September 2 when the 4th Degree supplied the Honor Guard for the Mass celebrated by the Hispanic Priests Association. There were 61 Hispanic Priests who were in attendance and the majority stopped during the procession to thank the Knights of Columbus. On the weekend of September 4th, 5th and 6th we held our Tootsie Roll Campaign at the Walmart Supercenter. It became very stressful when we had more hours than manpower. However as always we adjusted the schedule and work through the day. I must thank the 21 Knights including wives and a young teen seeking service hours for his confirmation for the 88 man hours worked. Over $3,600.00 was collected. Again many thanks to all who volunteered their time? I want to personally thank SK Chris Totolo on his inaugural Highway Cleanup Program on September 12th. I was proud to see all of the participants including the Cub Scout Pack and members of the YMP who came out to assist. During that same time our own Luis Class, Fernando De la Cruz were holding the annual Soccer Shootout on Foster Creek Road. On Saturday evening, September 12th our own SK John Camp participated in the last Honor Flight to Washington DC to visit the WWII Memorial, Korean Memorial and the Viet Nam Memorial. Many thanks to our DGK Lennie Tittle who escorted John throughout the day. Also, a thank you goes out to the 4th Degree Honor Guard who met the returning flight at the Charleston International Airport. 1 ACTIVE MILITARY PLEASE PRAY FOR THE FOLLOWING ACTIVE DUTY PERSONNEL: Mohse E. Gearhart, continued from page 1 On September 17th we held our monthly Family Social with a Football Tailgate Party theme. Again we had lots of fun and fellowship and were entertained by live streaming of the Clemson football game. As part of the Social we collected disposable diapers for the Low Country Pregnancy Center. SK Ed Cavadias delivered 31 packages along with cans of donated formula. We were also entertained by a slide show that was taken at the Airport of the arrival of the Honor Flight. I had the privilege of awarding Frank Bautista with the Knight of the Month Award and Alex and Aida Batu as Family of the Month. Congratulations to all. It is easy to select people that give so much to this Council. The weekend of the 16th thru the 20 was absolutely exhausting. We held another Tootsie Roll Campaign this time at the Walmart Neighborhood Market. Once again we struggled to fill the positions but we did and we collected over a $1000.00. On Sunday we served the church on Service Sunday and held a Food for Families Pack the Van Program. Again were very successful as we collected and donated 3,409 pounds of non-perishable food to Helping Hands. I want to personally thank those Knights especially Gene and Sophia Alaura, John Flinn and Milton Grant for volunteering their time monitoring the van prior to, during and after each mass. In conclusion I must ask again.what have you done this month to help the Knights of Columbus, Council 11991 or even your fellow man. October is fast approaching and we still have an enormous amount of work that needs to be done to satisfy our Operation Hope Goal of $13,875.00. District Deputy Report Knights in Action STAMPS FOR SISTERS OF THE HOLY CROSS Box 7 was mailed out to the sisters on 9/23/2015 and weighed approximately 6 pounds. My brother Knights you and members of ICCC and Goose Creek United Methodist Church have done a great job and I ask that you continue to support this effort. TABS FOR RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE On 9/22/2015, 12 gallons of tabs were delivered to the Ronald McDonald House bringing our total donated to 136. Everyone that has participated in this effort is doing a great job. Please continue to support this effort and ask others to participate. MEMBERSHIP Worthy brothers we currently have 7 new members, but our goal is 16. Please do your part and try to recruit a new member. The more we have means less work for all of us and also allows us to do more. RESPECT LIFE Abortion clinics in South Carolina (Charleston, Greenville & Columbia) have been in the news and here is some information. Abortions conducted at the Charleston Women s Medical Center for 2014 were as follows: 0 13 weeks 1858 14 19 weeks 29 20 or more weeks 0 The total for the entire state was 5714. A bit of good news for us is that the Greenville and Columbia clinics have had their licenses suspended because of violations and may end up being closed. Abortion takes an innocent life and leaves the mother and father with lifelong regret and pain. October is Respect Life month and there are many opportunities for each of you to participate in some of them. Upcoming events that you can participate in are: 9/23/2015 40 Days for Life (24/7) at the Charleston Women s Medical Center and ends 11/1/2015. 10/4/2015 Life Chain Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 2:00 pm until 3:30 pm. 4 Worthy State Officers, District Deputies, Grand Knights, and Brother Knights Volunteer s Are you one? Every man that has joined the Knights of Columbus did so because there was something in our organization that they wanted to be a part of. For some it was the comradery and fellowship of being with people with like thoughts, for others it was to make something with their hands to help someone else. And more than a few liked the idea of joining as a team to accomplish a great deed or deeds maybe it was like a knight standing up for what is right. I hope so! So how do we as Knights of Columbus accomplish any of this? We can try to do it alone but, unless you have a red cape and a large S on your chest you probably will not succeed. When we work as a team we rarely loose and often accomplish more than we set out to. Let me ask each one of you a very direct question; when was the last time you volunteered to help? I ask this because right now your council is pushing itself to its very limits because only a few of our men volunteered to help. Does it matter if is the Operation Hope Fund Drive, coats for kid s, building a wheelchair ramp, or even a few hours at the abortion clinic? How many of you will say yes when asked to help? Not enough I am asking you to think back to when you took that all important 1 st Degree You wanted to make a difference, well now is your chance to stand up and volunteer your time and energy. Be a Knight of Columbus. Remember what we can do. Pat Davis, District Deputy #13 BLOOD DRIVE Brother Joe O Saben reports that we collected 48 Pints of Blood from 47 Donors at our recent Blood Drive. Laura Zagby-Dye, 843-852-2915, 843-452-7036 was the Red Cross contact. Carol Faretra and Christina Watkins from the IC Church office took care of Bulletin Entries. The next Blood Drive will be November, 8, 2015 in the Parish Community Center. We have shifted to entering all donors on the Red Cross online registration form and it seems to operate more efficiently. There were 27 man-hours accumulated for this event. Joe O Saben, Treasurer

Many thanks to our DGK Lennie Tittle who escorted John throughout the day. Also, a thank you goes out to the 4th Degree Honor Guard who met the returning flight at the Charleston International Airport. Steve Kramp, FICF Dear Brother Knights, A topic that has come up several times in the past couple of months is the question of annuities. What are they and why should I look at them or not look at them? This is one of the questions coming out because of the fairly high but very volatile stock market. Think of an annuity as a tax deferred or tax exempt savings account with certain restrictions and benefits, some of which are dictated by the Federal Government. It was created primarily to help with retirement. It can be set up with money that you have or with an existing Roth or Traditional IRA, or with 401k monies. To start one today you would earn 2.5% for the first year and then be guaranteed at least +1.5%, regardless of what happens in our economy. When the market drops 300 or 500 points, you are still positive in your rate of return. It can never lose a cent! Brother Knights Receiving Their VIP Membership Pins Note: If you have an old annuity which has a guaranteed minimum of 3% or 3.5%, and you put more money into that annuity, the new money will still earn that contract minimum. If you would like to discuss this option, just let me know and we can get together to decide if it make sense for you! Your Brother Knight, Steve Kramp, PGK and FDD Field Agent, FICF (843) 771-2437 (Office) or (843) 475-7922 (Mobile) or Stephen.Kramp@kofc.org 5

Notice of Third Degree Exemplification Being held at Immaculate Conception Church in Goose Creek Worthy State Officers, District Deputies, Grand Knights, and Brother Knights On Saturday November 7th, 2015 District # 13 will be hosting a Third Degree Exemplification at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. This degree will be held in the Community Center. Immaculate Conception Catholic Church s address is 510 St. James Ave., Goose Creek, SC 29445. Registration for the Third Degrees will begin at 9:00 AM, ending at 9:45AM. The Third degree will begin promptly at 10:30 AM. All candidates must have a current and signed Second degree membership card. A representative from each council must also provide a letter from their Financial Secretary stating all candidates are in good standing and eligible for the third degree. The Grand Knight or his representative shall present their candidates a third degree and their membership card at the conclusion of the degree. The registration fee for all candidates is $7.00 (paid by the candidate s council). All fees are due at time of registration and can be paid for by Council check or cash. Make all checks payable to K of C Council 11991. Attire for candidates and observers is Coat and Tie or a Dress Military Uniform as this is the desire of District #13 to maintain the dignity of the Exemplification. All members and candidates must have a current and signed membership card for entry into the degree. A list of all candidates and observers must be sent to District Deputy Patrick A. Davis no later than Saturday, October 31, 2015. Vivat Jesus! Pat Davis, DD #13 6 FOURTH DEGREE 2014-2015 Brother Sir Knights, First, I would like to thank ALL our Assembly Officers and others that came and attended the Business Meeting last month. We had a quorum of 15 shortly after the start of the meeting. I have received word that our Faithful Scribe is heading back for Antarctica for the Southern Hemisphere Summer months. So we will need someone to fill in for him at Business meetings. At the Business meeting it was voted on and approved that the start time for our Assembly meetings will be at 7:30 for both O&D and Business meetings (at least for the remainder of this fraternal year). Socials will normally start earlier. It was also voted on and approved that we will waive dues for any members of the Diaconate or those studying for the Diaconate. We also obligated $500 to go to our Seminarian in November. Our next meeting will be our October Social at Olive Garden on Rivers Avenue near Northwoods Mall. It will be on Wednesday October 14 th. Dress Business Casual. Please arrive around 6:30 pm, and I hope to have Dinner starting around 7pm. I was surprised how well the input forms used at the Business meeting worked. I gave everyone an input form and with those 15 inputs the vote came down to the Olive Garden based upon a coin toss. Since Olive Garden and many other restaurants no longer take reservations in advance, it will be necessary to call or stop by 1 hour in advance to let them know we will be there and how many to set up for. Therefore, I will need RSVPs from those who plan to attend at least by Monday the 12 th of October (Columbus Day). Remember this Social is also for your spouse and any guests. You can phone me at (843-572-0943) or send me an email at (pgk6726pfn1900@comcast.net) with your RSVP. If you have agenda items needing to be brought before the Assembly I would ask that you please let me know those items prior to any meeting. Three of our SK s participated in the return of the last Honor Flight for WW2 & Korean War veterans on September 12 th at Charleston Airport. I want to thank SK Mike Cousino, SK Orlando Cabading and SK Frank Strunk for welcoming home these Heroes. Thanks also to our Sir Knights, Stephen Gearhart, Stephen Ekhaml, Mike Cousino, Jerry Tenney, Orlando Cabading and Jim Martin that participated in the Honor Guard at the Bishop s Mass and dedication of the shrine at 8:30 at Immaculate Conception on Saturday September 19 th. Thanks also to SK Adrian Maravilla who sang with the choir. We ask that any requests for Honor Guards be directed to either PFN Mike Cousino or me at least two weeks in advance (or as soon as possible). If you have any inputs that you would like added to The Patriot Telegraph newsletter please forward them to Mike at the Assembly email address.

1 st Degree Team Please consider becoming an active member of the First Degree team and be the first to welcome new members into our Fraternal Order. All positions require a backup and currently there are too few extras other than the original team member. Positions are as follows: Grand Knight - Lengthy vocal position. Opens the degree From the podium. Warden - Minimal vocal lines. Leads the candidates to the Council Chamber and presents them to the Chancellor. Inside Guard - Starts the proceedings. Chancellor - The degree is centered about this position. Deputy Grand Knight - Mainly in the middle of the degree. Aids/ Guards - Escorts the inductees in. No vocals involved. These positions are very rewarding in spirit and fellowship. What are the requirements to be a Degree Team member? Be a Third Degree Knight. All positions have a written script to follow. Please consider volunteering to participate in this vital function for OUR Council 11991. Be part of our Team E-mail - - - - frankifox@bellsouth.net SK Frank Strunk, Advocate Upcoming events: 40 Days for Life started September 23 rd and continues to Nov 1 st. (Pro) Life Chain event at IC on Sunday October 4 th from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Saturday October 10 th 4 th degree Exemplification in Myrtle Beach Monday October 12 th is Columbus Day Saturday November 7 th 3 rd degree at Immaculate Conception Stand up for Life Rally in Columbia Saturday January 9 th, 2016 Saturday February 20 th, 2016 4 th degree Exemplification in Columbia Saturday March 5 th 2016 SC Catholic Men s Conference at Immaculate Conception Don t forget to ask your fellow 3 rd degree Knights to join the 4 th degree. Have them complete the Form 4 and the Appropriate Dress for Candidates form, have the Form 4 signed by the Council Financial Secretary, and turn all into the Admissions Chairman Faithful Captain Stephen Gearhart.
