Feast of the Most Holy Trinity May 18, 2008 3 Last week s Fortieth Anniversary party was a huge success. Three hundred parishioners, both former and current members, were seated in the dining area (a.k.a. the Worship Area) and another hundred on the upper level. Several priests who have ministered at The Brook concelebrated. The liturgical music was excellent. Everyone who commented affirmed that the celebration was wonderfully uplifting. Those who stayed for dinner enjoyed a catered meal that was one of the best that I have ever attended; the caterers provided some serious prime rib of beef and/or chicken with mushrooms as entrées. The after dinner talks were taken care of by Fr. Herne -- who wasn t invited to speak until just before dinner, but who just happened to have a script and some props with him; Fr. Laz who recounted some of the happenings from the early days of the parish; and Sal Manso, in his role of PPC chairman, who acknowledged the founding members of the parish who were present. My thanks to all of the members of the committee and the liturgical ministers. The time, effort, and organizational skills that were donated for the shindig were time, effort, and skills well used. They will reap a rich harvest. Also, last week was Mothers Day, and I d like to share this story this story with you. As many of you know, several of the Mass vestments that I wore were made by my mother back around my ordination in 1971. Last week I was wearing a set made by Slabbinck, a firm in Belgium whose work is at the top of the line and who price their product in accord with their standing. A parishioner approached me and mentioned that they were beautiful vestments and asked if my mother made them. I don t usually get Mothers Day gifts but that was one to remember and in the heavenly mansion, Mom had a really big smile on her face. Peace, now and always, ADULT FAITH FORMATION The OLB Speaker Series As a continuation of this year s speaker series, which has included Ms. Jean Bishop, Rabbi Eitan Weiner- Kaplow, and Fr. Joe Mulcrone, the Spiritual Life Commission of the Parish Pastoral Council will welcome Fr. Marty Barnum, who will speak on the topic The Lord Takes Delight in You: Living in Joyful Hope, at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 22. This theme is directly related to our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI latest encyclical, Spes Salve (On Christian Hope). Rev. Barnum is currently Director of Spiritual Life at the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. He was ordained in 1974, and has served at several area parishes, including Sacred Heart in Winnetka, St. Isaac Jogues in Niles, and Our Lady of the Wayside in Arlington Heights. He was Director of Spiritual Formation for ten years at Sacred Heart School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wisconsin before coming to St. Mary of the Lake. He holds a Masters of Divinity from St. Mary of the Lake, an M.A. from Mundelein College, and a Doctorate in Ministry from Catholic Theological Union. Please plan on attending this special evening. All are welcome.

Feast of the Most Holy Trinity May 18, 2008 5 Sunday by Sunday - Feast of the Most Holy Trinity MYSTERY SOLVED? The scriptures for this feast give us important clues to help us grasp, if not solve, the mystery of God. In the reading from Exodus God s name is revealed to Moses. God is the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity (Exodus 34:6). Thus, unimaginable as it may be, the Lord of the whole universe cares intimately for humanity and treats us always with merciful love. In fact, the Gospel tells us that God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that we might have eternal life (John 3:16). And that is not the end of God s loving-kindness. The reading from Second Corinthians reminds us that the God of love and peace (2 Corinthians 13:11) is in our midst when we live in love and peace. God shares divine life with us by pouring out the Holy Spirit of grace, love, and holiness into the community of those who believe. MYSTERY LIVED! While we can never fully understand the mystery of God, we do receive clues to the nature of God through our experiences of God moving in our lives. And those experiences reveal to us that what the scriptures say is true. Little by little we realize with awe that God is indeed the Lord of the universe, creating and ordering all that is good. We recognize with humble gratitude the ways in which Christ s immense love has saved and brought us to life. Finally, we experience with joy the Holy Spirit alive in the community of believers, filling us with a love and peace that could only come from God. The mystery of the Trinity is meant to be experienced, believed, and lived. And we ourselves are called to be living clues that reveal to others the mysterious love of the Most Holy Trinity. How are you being called to reveal the mystery of the Trinity more fully in your life? Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 6 WHAT S GOING ON IN THE WOMEN S CLUB? CONGRATULATIONS are in order for our FISHING FOR CASH winners: Jane Caccamo won $300 and Sheila Mahoney and Norma Galassini each won $100! This was the last drawing for this fishing season. A new season will open in September with our first drawing in November. We wish to thank everyone who participated for their support of this major fundraiser. Looking back at our fiscal year, the Women s Club provided a host of activities not only for our members but for the whole parish: On Saturday, October 20, we presented Sister Bernie s Bingo Bash. It was a fun-filled theatre night. A lot of activity took place in December. Our Christmas Bake & Craft Sale on December 8 & 9 was very successful. On December 13 we hosted a Christmas Luncheon for the Seniors of our parish. Members also visited and sent greeting cards to many of our homebound parishioners. We sold Entertainment Books and the profits benefited our parish. We also donated all the ingredients for a complete Christmas dinner for the families staying at New Life Shelter. Throughout the year we continued to help this shelter with needed items including toiletries. Members of the Women s Club led the Lenten Stations of the Cross on February 22 and provided some delicious soups for supper. On March 9 we were delighted to provide a reception following the 11:15 AM Mass at which Cardinal George presided. The Open Meeting for all women of the parish took place on April 17. Suzanne Hales, a noted dramatist, performed A Celebration of Chicago Women. Her performance was not only enlightening but very entertaining. We also enjoyed some Chicago treats. Many thanks to the members who created lovely hand-sewn and embroidered baptismal garments for the newest members of our parish. For Easter, several Guild members made beautiful baskets for the children at St.Martin s. From October to April we continued to host DONUT SUNDAYS after all Sunday Masses. The coffee and treats after all Sunday Masses as well as the summer lemonade and cookies after 9:30 Mass seemed to be enjoyed by all. Special thanks to the many ladies (and gentlemen) who brought in extra treats! Among our accomplishments this past year was that we provided the parish with an $8,000 donation commemorating the deceased members of the Women s Club. We also provided $500 to each of our charities (voted upon by our membership) i.e. Little Mexico, Aid for Women and WINGS (Women in Need Growing Stronger). At the 11:15 AM Mass on Sunday, May 4, we held our installation of officers for the 2008-2009 year. They are: Co-Presidents Maureen Hubbs & Jane Marmet Vice President Elaine Lewis Treasurer Diane Spanier Recording Secretary Ronnie Feerick Corresponding Secretary Suzanne Noonan Thanks to everyone who made this past year a most successful and enjoyable one. We look forward to more women joining us in the many activities of the Women s Club this coming year. (Continued from page 5) students with me. We are three priests in the administration, since this is the Provincial House with me the additional charge of the 2nd Counselor. On April 14th I just celebrated my Sacerdotal Silver Jubilee. Kindly do pray for me and join me to thank the good Lord for the innumerable graces that He showered on me during the last 25 years. It was a Grace-filled and happy 25 years for me, in serving the Lord and His people. Wishing you all once again the Joy, Blessing and Warm Greetings of the 40th Anniversary of your Big Family of OLB, I remain, Fr. Joe Mappilaparambil, CMF
