1st Sunday in Lent March 13, 2011 3 Women s Club Help Wanted If everyone does something, then no one does everything. Building a parish community takes many hands, and at OLB the Women s Club has does just that. It builds community by following its mission to Grow spiritually, share friendship and help OLB through activities that raise funds and share community in the Parish. Our Club is composed of Guild members and Associate Members. Often the Guilds will take on a certain event to accomplish our mission. Fishing for Cash is sponsored by Guild 10 this year, The Craft and Bake Sale by Guilds 6 and 7, and the Chili Supper by Guild 7. Our associate members often step up to help when they can by baking or assisting at an event such as hospitality on Sundays, Membership Sunday, and other events that crop up throughout the year where the WC is needed. This year our Senior Luncheon (scheduled for April 2) does not have a Guild to back it. We are reaching out to Associate and Guild Members to help sponsor this event. If you would be willing to help in one of the specific areas identified below, please contact Sandy Koziol, (847-714-9428) by March 14 th. Bake a Main Dish Meal (lasagna, Ham or Turkey, to be decided upon) Prepare a salad for 20 people (recipe will be given) Bake a dessert (recipe will be given) Help Serve on Saturday, April 2 (set up, serve, clean up between the hours of 10:00 3:00 p.m.) Wash Table Linens Together we can do great things for God (and each other) Congratulations Saturday, March 12, two of our young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St. Norbert: Michael Maliszewski and Paul Sullivan. Congratulations on being fully initiated members of the faith community! May the Lord who has begun this great work in you bring it to completion. Ministers of Care Training We are desperately in need of new Ministers of Communion who are willing to serve at Glenbrook Hospital either on a weekday or Sunday. We usually solicit new members during our ministries and activities drive in the Easter Season. However, we just received notification that the Basic Training Course is being offered at Lutheran General Hospital on Thursdays from 7:00PM-9:00PM on April 28, May 5, 12, 19, and May 26. The course and attendance at all five session is a requirement for certification and installation as a Minister of Care of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Please give this call to ministry prayerful reflection. If you would like to offer your services please contact Deacon Peery at peery@olbparish.org. Journeying Through the Desert As we enter the desert of Lent together, Jesus shows us that to live fully the life God has given us, we must obey His Commandments and follow the Holy Spirit. Just as we are called to care for the gift of our eternal life, we are also called to care for the gift of God s creation. Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl supports agriculture programs in Haiti and around the world that teach farmers effective and ecologically sensitive growing methods which allow them to get the most out of their land while preserving it for future generations.

Our Lady of the Brook Parish Northbrook, Illinois 8 A TIME OF HOPE AND RENEWAL You will not find many Catholics who could say that Lent is their favorite time of year. In fact, most American Catholics shy away from the simplicity, somber colors and reflective readings and music that we experience in our parishes during this time of year, yet this new Season of Lent is a time of hope and renewal. The readings for today may offer only a discussion on sin and temptation at first glance, though a deeper examination unpacks the compassion of a forgiving God who loves us unconditionally. It s hard not to feel hopeful about that! Throughout Lent we are asked to open ourselves to God through practices of prayer, fasting and Almsgiving. Why not begin today by prayerfully re-reading the Gospel (Mt 4:1-11) and reflecting on its meaning in your life? Praying the Scriptures is a way to renew your faith and strengthen your relationship with God. The Gospel tells of Jesus alone praying and fasting in the desert, hungry, exhausted and being tempted by the devil. When were you at the moment of lost hope in your life and where did you find strength to resist temptation and move forward? In the last lines we hear that Jesus finds strength and hope in a loving relationship with God. As Baptized Catholics we can also claim our place as sons and daughters of God the Father and through God s love we can overcome all of life s challenges. You are sons and daughters of God! Let someone know the joy you feel! The goal for all evangelization efforts is to strengthen our connection to God and then share it with others. Throughout the Catholics Come Home evangelization efforts we heard stories of Catholics who had been away from the Church and one person invited them to know more about God s love. With a simple invitation like, come with me to Mass or join me in one of my Bible Study sessions a life was changed and another person came back to the Church. Who do you know that needs a sense of hope and God s strength? Who can you invite this week? St Joseph International Table Saturday, March 19, 6:00 pm Bring your favorite dish to share Meatless or with Meat Please bring enough to serve 8 to 10 Warmers and a fridge available Fill out form below or email your info to bulletin@olbparish.org.
