FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 10, 2019 FROM THE DESK OF...DEACON JOE SMITH MASS INTENTIONS February 12 February 17 In our first reading this week, we hear of the call of the Prophet Isaiah to begin his service to the Lord. He senses his own unworthiness to be in the divine presence. God called Isaiah but Isaiah states, woe is me for I m a man of unclean lips. God purifies his mouth so he can convey God s word to all. The prophet is transformed by this encounter and freely volunteers for this service stating, Here I am send me. In our Gospel reading, we hear how Simon, like Isaiah, said to the Lord that he is a sinful man not worthy to be in his presence. Without this encounter with Christ, Simon could not really be aware of his own limitation and would be unproductive as a fisher of men. It is Jesus own words that gives Simon his new identity and transforms the life of Peter. Today, these same words from God who called Isaiah and Peter are now a call to all of us. Within our own limitations, we should recognize how we all encounter Christ in our own way. Our call, which is God s call for us, is to be what God intends us to be. This is not merely for us to lead a life of personal holiness lived within the union of God. As important as this might be, we are called by God who sends us out into the world. As life transforming as our own call is to be in the service of God, we must be aware of our own limitations and know our call will come to us in the ordinariness of life. God uses ordinary people in ordinary places to reveal the extraordinariness of His saving works. Above all we are called to proclaim the life, death and resurrection of Jesus to everyone we meet.
