Reflections: Dear St. Patrick s Parish, While the recent YNIA mission to Green Bay, Wisconsin is my third adventure with St. Patrick s and YNIA, it was unique and will always stand out in my mind. Though the structure and format was the same as the 2017 and 2016 trips to Detroit, Michigan and Tuscan, Arizona, my first trip to Cheese head territory presented new challenges and unexpected obstacles which gave way to some surprising lessons about both myself and the world-at-large. At the beginning of the two hour drive from the airport in Milwaukee, WI to our temporary home-away-from-home in Green Bay, WI, our group unexpectedly found various similarities between Wisconsin and Massachusetts; for example both were lush and green, with similar types of plants and climate. However, as we got further away from the city, we found ourselves surrounded by and driving through endless rows of fields that could not be matched here at home. This theme of similarities continued as my group went to our work-site, St. Vincent de Paul whose mission is to provide quality used items at a discounted price, match donated items to people who need them, and use the proceeds from our stores to help people in need. Their thrift store has many attributes that make it similar to Northbridge s own Salvation Army; the store s overall appearance and the items they sell have a striking resemblance. As the week went on, I found many people who reminded me of people in my hometown. With each task given I continued to see what I could do in my own town, in our own community. St. Vincent de Paul is a Christian thrift shop that not only helps the people they serve by providing affordable items, but also by offering employment to folks who may not be able to find work elsewhere. One morning I bagged goods and ran for carts for a man named Pete. He shared with me/us that a few years back he was diagnosed with MS. Shortly after, his previous employer gained knowledge of his condition and fired him. After struggling to find another job, his priest put him in contact with St. Vincent de Paul, and he got a job working in the back; eventually earning his way to the front. This is only one example of how St. Vincent de Paul helps those who are discriminated against. While working the racks on our last afternoon, Elise and I surprised the employees by organizing their prom dress section. When we showed Dawn (an employee that we were putting clothes out with), she almost broke down. Throughout the week we witnessed the dedicated staff practically drowning in a pile of clothes that needed to be processed and put out onto the racks for customers, and though we made a considerable difference there had and always will be more to do. And while we tried to help her as much as we could, it became clear that there would always be more to do. Dawn told us that if we had not organized the prom dress section, it would have never gotten done. I will never forget her face when we told her she had to go; she looked so disappointed. I have been blessed to see many places and meet lots of people in my 17 years. but I never could have guessed that the people at St. Vincent de Paul in Green Bay would take my breath away. Being there away from home in a place I might never have gone without St. Patrick s and YNIA taught me more about me, my hometown and the people in it than I ever knew. And for that, I will be forever grateful. Sincerely, Grace Upcoming Car Wash! August 18th, 9:15 AM - 1:30 PM All proceeds will be used to upgrade and beautify the Parish Center. The car washes will be held in our Church parking lot.

VATICAN SUMMIT ON CREATION CARE Earlier this month, the Vatican hosted a two-day conference on the third anniversary of Laudato Si, with the theme " Saving Our Common Home and the Future of Life on Earth." People from seemingly every background and place on Earth were present- the head of the UNFCC( the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) stood by indigenous leaders from the Amazon... who stood by classically trained economists... who stood by teenaged environmental activists... who stood by ministers and members of Parliament... who stood by climate prophets from the Pacific. Pope Francis said, "Your presence here is a sign of your commitment to take concrete steps to save the planet and the life it sustains and inspired by the Encyclical's assumption that "EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED.'" That principle, he said, "lies at the heart of an integral ecology." He noted the "INCREASINGLY ACCURATE ASSESSMENTS" of the scientific community concerning the environment. "There is a real danger that we will leave future generations only rubble, deserts, and refuse." At the same time, he expressed hope that concern for our common home would be converted into concrete actions to preserve the environment, calling on governments to honor their commitments to the 2015 Paris Agreement in order to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis, and pointing to international action gatherings coming up later this year/ next year. He reminded participants; "Dear brothers and sisters, challenges are not lacking," but "INJUSTICE IS NOT INVINCIBLE." The conference's five specific proposals for making progress in achieving Pope Francis' vision of integral ecology: " RENEW THE COMMITMENT ON Laudato Si requests for an URGENT RADICAL ECOLOGICAL CONVERSION (Pope St John Paul's call) to take action in the care of creation. RAISE AMBITION AT COP24 for a just transition to achieve 1.5 degree Celsius goal to protect the most vulnerable. ( 24th Conference of the Parties, UNFCC, to be held Dec 3-4 in Katosice, Slaskie. Poland) DEEPEN ACTION AMONG YOUNG AND INDIGENOUS PEOPLE during the synods on youth and the Amazon, and beyond, to ensure long-lasting ecological justice. ENCOURAGE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS to support decisions toward an integral ecology by "walking the talk" as a church, including investments with positive social and environmental impact. ENGAGE THE FAITHFUL IN THE CELEBRATION OF THE SEASON OF CREATION (Sept 1 to Oct 4 every year) with other Christian churches, to motivate radical conversion and transformative action." Pope Francis also mentioned the upcoming Global climate Action Summit, taking place this September in San Francisco, CA, while urging the support of "citizen pressure groups' to provide support.
