Fr. Dan Weekly Message ADVENT Yes, there is no need to rush to Christmas. And, with a lile advance planning now, Advent can find its proper place on the calendar and in our hearts. Here are some suggesons for a prayerful Advent Season: Having a prayer plan is the most important Advent planning. Whether it be a personal choice from the many wonderful resources for Advent or a plan for prayer as a family, planning ahead can lead to a more peaceful, prayerful Advent. Parents of older children may want to include them in the planning for Advent devoons. Don t forget the feast days that come in December. Among the many days for celebraon, we have many feasts as well as the feast of the Immaculate Concepon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Spending some days in Advent celebrang the feasts of these holy men and women is not just a teachable moment for the family. These are tangible celebraons not random days of the vague holidays season. Not only are these days faithfilled and fun days, but they are also great moments for evangelizaon as we share the reason for our celebraons. Remember that Christmas is more than one day and plan accordingly. While secular media pulls the Christmas rug out from under us on the 24 th of December, we know that the 25 th of December is just the beginning of our Christmas celebraon. Just as we should not rush to Christmas, we should ignore the cultural influences that try to rush us past this holy season. Fr. Dan Catholic Quotes Words to Inspire the Faithful In the evening of life, we will be judged on love alone. -St. John of the Cross Eucharistic Adoration for Advent Available every Tuesday 2:00-9:00 p.m. In our Chapel Set aside me on Tuesdays to spend with the Lord praying for our Parish, St. Paul s, our country and your own special intenons. WHAT IS YOUR CATHOLIC IQ? Hosts used for Communion a) must be embossed with the leers IHS b) have to be shaped as small disks c) are made of flour and water d) may be made with addives such as sugar or honey. Why do we do that? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Queson: What is the Hispanic Advent custom of "Las Posadas"? Answer: "Posada" is the Spanish word for inn or lodging. "Las Posadas" refers to a tradional Advent custom in preparaon for the birth of Jesus, beginning on December 16. For nine successive evenings, groups reenact the search of Mary and Joseph for shelter in Bethlehem. Two children dress as Mary and Joseph, somemes with Mary riding on an actual donkey. They are usually accompanied by children dressed as angels and shepherds along with the Wise Men. Adults accompany them as they process to designated homes where they sing Christmas songs and request lodging. Part of the group enters the home and becomes the chorus that responds to the request for lodging. In the beginning the request is rebuffed. They move to several more homes where the ritual is repeated. Eventually, at the last home, their need is recognized, and they all enter the home where a party ensues. This is repeated in different neighborhoods and homes each of the nine days. While this custom teaches children an important aspect of the Christmas story, it also emphasizes the need for hospitality to strangers and the connual need we all have to make room for Jesus in our "posada." As we struggle to arrive at a fair and just immigra- on policy, it would be good to recall the fact that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were also immigrants looking for a hospitable place to dwell. VINCENT DE PAUL 2nd Sunday of Advent In today s Gospel John the Bapst urges us to Prepare the way of the Lord. We are called to help prepare the way of the Lord by making the real meaning of Christmas come alive in our own hearts, in our family and to reach out to those in need. Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor to celebrate Christmas. Sharing the Gospel For the Kids Imagine John the Bapst is preaching today. He is preaching not only to you, but to people watching television at home. You and your family are down by the river having a picnic. John says, "Tell God that you are sorry for your bad behavior." John warns, "Stop sinning. Follow God's commandments." You say: "Count me as a child of God. Wash me with the waters of God's bapsm." Prayer Lord, I repent of my sins. Bathe me with your waters of forgiveness. Mission for the Week Every day I will tell God that I am sorry for my sins. ST. PAUL MASS SCHEDULE: Saturday: 5:30 p.m. Sunday: 9:00 a.m. Weekdays: Tues. 8:00 a.m. & Fri. 8:45 a.m. Reconciliaon: 2nd & 4th Saturday 10:00 a.m. or by appointment LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK John the Bapst announced, "Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." Does preparing a way for the Lord have priority in our lives? Oen we spend more me preparing paths for ourselves rather than a path for God. Advent calls us to take the focus off ourselves and put it on God. We prepare a path for God by praccing and living the virtues, being holy and devoted, paent and repentant, and aenve and humble. We are asked to bring comfort and healing to people and to show others by the way we live our lives that we have a higher calling and purpose. Pray for Peace Does your child need to be Bapzed? Please remember that all parents must aend a preparaon class before their child can be bapzed.
