THE KNIGHT LINE BREESE COUNCIL #2869 JULY 2007 CHARITY UNITY FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM Grand Knight s Notes As the calendar rolls over to July, we find ourselves at the beginning of another fraternal year. I believe it important at this time to extend a heartfelt thank you on behalf of all our Council members to immediate Past Grand Knight Shane Bowen for his dedicated service in leading us this past year! Under his guidance, the Breese Council was presented with the prestigious Illinois Spirit Holy Grail Award for completion of more than thirty-eight programs. This award was issued to only twenty-seven Councils in the state at the Illinois State Knights of Columbus Convention over Memorial Day weekend. I have enjoyed working with Shane and learning so much more about the behind-the-scenes work that allows a KC Council to operate effectively. I also wish to thank all of last year s officers for their service and for their continuing commitment to offer their time and talents for another year. Let me say that I am truly honored that you have placed your trust in me to lead you through this fraternal year. I will do my best to maintain that confidence. Since joining the Knights of Columbus at the Breese Council Major Degree on Palm Sunday 2004, I must say that I have come to love this organization. The principles and values espoused by the Knights have always been those I have tried to develop in my life. I view service in this fraternity as one way to live out Gospel values alongside brothers with a common faith. I would like to share with you an experience from New Year s Day 2007. I was visiting my good friend and lifelong neighbor at the hospital. He was recovering from a recent surgery and after a short visit his attention was required for an extended time by the nurses. My friend s sister had arrived to visit and as we spoke I mentioned my involvement in the Breese Knights of Columbus Council. Her husband had passed away within the last few years and had been a member of our Council. She spoke very appreciatively of the Knights and all the great work we do for the good of others. She recalled with some emotion the Memorial Mass she had attended for her husband and other departed members of our Council. She praised the virtues of the Knights, and as I now recall, cited honesty as one of these virtues no less than three times in our conversation of under thirty minutes. As I left the hospital, I felt no small satisfaction in being a part of a group that is held in such high regard. I later realized that this high reputation also carries with it a challenge to maintain the high standards which brought about that high regard in the first place. As current members of the Breese Knights of Columbus Council, I believe we must all strive to maintain that high regard earned by our predecessors over the years. To loosely quote from Luke 12:48, from those to whom much has been given, much will also be expected Finally, I ask for your assistance and your prayers for success in our endeavors during this new fraternal year. Page 2 THE KNIGHT LINE Breese Council Officers Election and Installation New officers were elected at the June 14 Council meeting and completed an installation ceremony after the 10AM Mass at St. Rose Church on Sunday, July 1 st. Our chaplain, Father Chuck Tuttle, beginning with a brief history of the formation of the K of C by Father Michael McGivney in 1882, spoke about the value of the work of our order in support of the Church and against the erosion of traditional moral principles evident in our world today. The Mass and installation was enhanced by participation of the Bishop Althoff 4 th Degree Assembly. Officers and family members enjoyed dinner at the Breese KC Hall following the ceremony. As Grand Knight, I wish to thank those new officers who have answered the call to serve, as well as the veterans returning to serve for another fraternal year. I am confident that this group of brother Knights will serve us well as we endeavor to continue the tradition of excellence of the Breese Council while striving to improve in our program of charitable activities. The schedule calls for shotgun starts at 7:30 AM and 12:30 PM. Cost is $55 per person or $220 per 4 man team. This includes a chicken dinner at our hall after golfing. As of this writing, there are still openings for 4 additional teams. Chairmen Curt Zurliene and Phillip Moss have once again been hard at work preparing for this event which is so well supported by many of our brother Knights from nearby councils. Call Curt (526-2018) or Phillip (526-7144) to reserve your spot ASAP! Let us all make every effort to help and be on time if asked to work the tournament, whether it be at the golf course or frying chicken. Together, we can make it another great success!

JULY 2007 Page 3 Step Up to the Plate and Donate - K of C and D of I Blood Drive Spread the Word! On July 11, we will again be cooperating with the Daughters of Isabella to host an American Red Cross Blood Drive, where presenting donors will receive a St. Louis Cardinals/Busch Stadium World Champions t-shirt designed by artist John Pils. Your help is needed this summer. Every blood donation can help save the lives of up to three people. That s an entire outfield! Be a member of the team this summer and give the gift of life. At last year s drive (July 2006), 86 productive units were collected. In January 2007 the number was up to 107 productive units. With the help of the Cardinals, let s challenge ourselves to beat the January total! Step Up to the Plate at: Breese 480 North Walnut Breese, IL Wednesday, July 11 2:00 PM 7:00 PM 86th Annual BBQ Raffle Ticket Sales With this newsletter you will find two books (15 tickets @ $1 each) of Cooperative BBQ Raffle tickets. If each of our 650+ members sells 2 books of tickets (or buys them himself) $20 is generated per member! Imagine the help our council can extend with such extra funding to the recipients of our various charitable donations! We need the help of all Council members in this endeavor! Simply use the enclosed pre-addressed envelope to return all sold tickets with a check written to the Breese K of C by Monday, Aug. 20 (or hand deliver to Mike Nettemeier). Additional raffle tickets are available by contacting Mike or GK Rich Koerkenmeier at grandknight@breeseknights.org or at 974-1910. (Unsold tickets need not be returned.) He is also able to draw an audience with his variety of interesting stories, jokes etc. In addition, Ralph continues to serve on the Columbian Board of which he is a past president. Please thank Ralph for his continued dedicated service to our council. Father Steve Humphrey - 40 th Anniversary and Retirement A group of Breese Council Knights has volunteered to help in serving a meal as part of Father Steve Humphrey s 40 th Anniversary and Retirement Event on Sunday, July 8th at St. Boniface Parish at Germantown. The Breese Knights join with his parish faithful in thanking Father Humphrey for his 40 years of service to our Lord and our Church. Family of the Month - Shane & Sheena Bowen Immediate Past Grand Knight Shane Bowen and his wife Sheena are our July Family of the Month. Shane s dedicated leadership and guidance allowed our Breese Council to once again earn the prestigious Illinois Spirit Award at our recent State Convention. Sheena is to be commended for the patience, understanding and support given to Shane during his tenure as Grand Knight. Now, at the end of his successful term, Shane and Sheena are experiencing some significant changes in their lives. They are currently completing a move to Vandalia, IL after purchasing a home there. Even more exciting is the news that they are expecting their first child around February 2008! Sheena recently completed a Master s Degree in Social Work from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and is currently employed at St. Mary s Hospital in Centralia. Shane plans to continue to work at Abacus Professional Services here in Breese. We wish them well and hope that Shane will be able to remain involved as a valuable asset to the Breese Council. Council Events Planning Meeting Our council needs your ideas and leadership in planning future events for this new fraternal year. Please join us on Thursday, July 26, at the Breese Northside Park. Dinner will be served at 7:00 PM with the Planning Meeting to follow at 8:00 PM.

Spotlight on Squires As was the case last year, two members of this year s State Squires officer team have risen from the Breese Squires Circle, thanks no doubt to the leadership of Counselors Brad Halstead and Doug Kuhl and Illinois State Squires Committee member Joe Langhauser. Last year s State Chief Squire Jacob Deiters and State Bursar Squire Trent Halstead recently joined our council as brother Knights. At the State Convention in May, State Deputy Paul Havrilka Jr. administered the oath of office to Michael Harper as State Deputy Chief Squire and to Luke Essenpries as State Bursar Squire.
