News For Our Parishes Blessing of Homes This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. A tradition has developed of the Blessing of Homes at this time. The blessing is a sign that just as the Wise Men welcomed Jesus into the world we are called to do the same. All families are invited to gather in their homes and together ask God s blessing of their home and all who dwell there. The Blessing consists of praying the following together: Leader: Peace to this house. All: And to all who dwell herein. All: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh as symbol of his burial. Leader: Our Father Leader: Let us pray. O God, who by the guidance of a star didst on this day manifest Thine onlybegotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we who know Thee by faith may also attain the vision of Thy glorious majesty. Through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. Leader: Let us pray. Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Thy law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord. All: Amen. 20 + C + M + B + 19 May Christ bless this dwelling place. St. John the Evangelist Church UNIONTOWN, PA S S is offered to the families of Pearl Warman and Dora Lavery. May perpetual light shine upon them and the souls of all the faithful departed. The Epiphany of the Lord We hear in the first reading foretold by the prophet Isaiah of a light and later in the gospel of the wisemen following the light of a star to find Jesus. Our hymns keep within the theme of light brought into a world of darkness. The First Nowell and We Three Kings of Orient Are describe the story of the shepherds and Kings following the light of the star until it came to rest where Jesus lay. We conclude the refrain of We Three Kings by singing: Guide us to the perfect Light. The perfect Light, notice the L is capitalized, is Jesus. Jesus, the Light of the World. In the hymn, Child of Mercy, we sing that Jesus is a child of light and in the first verse All who walk in darkness have seen a great light, to those who dwell in fear a light has shone. Finally, in our closing hymn, W hat Star is This, we hear important words of our life mission. The 3 rd verse refers to the star of grace urging us to seek him and let not our slothful hearts refuse the guidance of your light to use. Our mission is for us to always turn to the Light, Jesus, for guidance, and to be a light for others in our everyday lives. Be like Jesus and be the light that brings someone closer to God, our Father. ~ Michelle A B S Sessions resume Monday, January 7 th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Center. Christmas 2018 N T We express our thanks to the Christian Mothers, Holy Name Society, and four parishioners of St. Joseph Church who donated funds to purchase the new Christmas trees that decorate our Altar this year. We are most grateful for their generosity. T G In today s gospel creation itself proclaims the birth of Jesus to the magi, the kings who are strangers in the land of Israel. They follow the star in their search for this newborn king, and when they find him not in the palace in Jerusalem but in a humble home in Bethlehem, they worship this baby and offer him kingly gifts. The magi respond with joy to the revelation of Jesus, unlike Herod who is greatly troubled. Unable to receive the gift of Jesus or to offer Jesus the gift of himself he remains hostage to his greed and lust for power. Minister Schedule J 12 13 Lectors: 7:30 AM: J. Wells; 10:00 AM: J. Envelope numbers have changed, so please be sure to return the enclosed form with your first contribution and include your name on the envelope of your first few offerings. Also, young adults, 18 years old/graduated from high school, are asked to contact the Parish Office in order to be transferred to adult status on the parish census and/or the envelope listing. Thank you to parents for teaching your child the practice of supporting the Church. Finding God The splendid magi, all sparkle and dash and solemnity, march right up off the pages of Matthew s Gospel and into our churches today. Matthew alone tells us this grand and seductive story so that we might see the light and know that the child these magi visited is the fulfillment of prophecy, the king of the world that stretches to the magi s home country and beyond, right down the ages to us. We too see and understand anew. Like the magi, our patron saints for this day, we see in the newborn child the king of the universe and light of the world. Like the magi, we find in ourselves a new faith and a new life. Like them, we return to our home by a new route. We are asked to come away from this festive season ourselves renewed and awake to the presence of God among us. We are asked to find God where God is to be found, to be attentive and surprised and ready to bow down in adoration and to offer our gifts. A S If you are interested in joining the Altar Society, please call Peggy Hidock (724)570-1863. The next meeting will be held March 7, 2019. Mark your calendars. Christmas 2018 Gold, Frankincense, Myrrh The gifts of the magi reveal the nature of Jesus to us. Gold is the gift befitting a king. Frankincense was a precious incense burned at the temple as a sign of the presence of God. Myrrh is mentioned in the gospels surrounding Jesus death. It is offered to Jesus on the cross mixed with wine, which he refuses to drink, and it is among the perfumes and spices that Nicodemus brings to prepare Jesus body for burial. The gifts proclaim Jesus king, God, and human. From creation to angelic messages to small details in the gospel, it seems that God desires to communicate God-self to us through whatever means available. The question is, are we listening?
