THE SIXTH SUNDAY IN LENT: PALM SUNDAY INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES P: The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. C: And also with you. P: Dear friends in Christ, for five weeks of Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord s paschal mystery. Today we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week. Christ entered in triumph into his own city to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer, to die, and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the empty tomb and follow him with a lively faith. United with him by Baptism, we share in his resurrection and new life. P: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. C: Hosanna in the highest! PSALM 118 Men will sing the first half of each verse, women the second. All join to sing refrains and Glory be Give thanks to the LORD, for / he is good; his love endures for- / ever. Open for me the gates of / righteousness; I will enter and give thanks / to the LORD. 3

This is the gate / of the LORD through which the righteous may / enter. Refrain O LORD / save us; O LORD, grant / us success. Blessed is he who comes in the name / of the LORD. From the house of the LORD we / bless you. The LORD / Is God, and he has made his light / shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal pro- / cession up to the horns of the / altar. Refrain You are my God, and I will / give you thanks; you are my God, and I will ex- / alt you. Give thanks to the LORD, for / he is good; his love endures for- / ever. Glory be to the Father and / to the Son and to the Holy / Spirit, as it was in the be- / ginning, is now, and will be forever. / Amen. Refrain P: Let us pray. God our Father, we remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem and was welcomed as a king by those who shouted Hosanna and spread their clothing and palm branches in his path. Accept our praise, and listen to our prayers as we rejoice in our triumphant King, Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. C: Amen. P: Let us go forth in peace, C: In the name of the Lord. The children will begin their procession (Sunday only). 4

PROCESSION HYMN All Glory, Laud, and Honor 131 CHILDREN S ANTHEM (Sunday only) Prepare the Way for the Lord Joanne Brown LeDoux Chorus: Prepare the way. The King is coming here today, Prepare the way for the Lord. He comes in glorious majesty, displaying power and love. Prepare the way. Prepare the way for the Lord. We ve waited long to see the one who makes the blind to see. With healing in His ev ry word, He sets the people free. So, make glad your mind, sing out your song, make haste with no delay. The King completely requires your heart, prepare, prepare the way. Chorus PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. We praise you, O God, for the great acts of love by which you redeemed us through your Son, Jesus Christ. As he was acclaimed by those who scattered their garments and branches of palm in his path, so may we always hail him as our King and follow him with perfect confidence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. 5

THE WORD FIRST LESSON Isaiah 45:22-25 22 Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. 23 By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear. 24 They will say of me, In the Lord alone are deliverance and strength. All who have raged against him will come to him and be put to shame. 25 But all the descendants of Israel will find deliverance in the Lord and will make their boast in him. PSALM OF THE DAY (5:00, 9:15) Psalm 24 P: The earth is the LORD S, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; Men: for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. Women: Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? P: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. M: He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior. W: Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. All: Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. P: Who is this King of glory? M: The Lord strong and mighty, W: The Lord might in battle. All: Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. P: Who is he, this King of glory? M: The LORD almighty W: he is the King of glory. 6

PSALM OF THE DAY (8:00, 10:30) Psalm 24 The cantor will sing the verses of the Psalm. The congregation is welcome to join in singing the refrains. Refrain: Cantor Refrain: Congregation The Lord s is the earth and its fullness, the world, and those who dwell in it. It is he who set it on the seas; on the rivers he made it firm. Refrain Who shall climb the mountain of the LORD? Who shall stand in his holy place? The clean of hands and pure of heart, whose soul is not set on vain things. Refrain Blessings from the LORD shall he receive, and right reward from the God who saves him. Such are the people who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Refrain SECOND LESSON Hebrews 12:1-3 12 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. VERSE OF THE DAY John 12:23 P: The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 7

Worship services center around the Gospel Reading; we rise to highlight its function. P: The Gospel according to Luke chapter 19. C: Glory be to you, O Lord. GOSPEL Luke 19:28-40 28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30 Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? say, The Lord needs it. 32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, Why are you untying the colt? 34 They replied, The Lord needs it. 35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38 Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest! 39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, Teacher, rebuke your disciples! 40 I tell you, he replied, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise be to you, O Christ. HYMN OF THE DAY Ride On, Ride On in Majesty 133 SERMON Matthew 21:1-11 Save Us Now! 8

NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. THANK OFFERING Moved by God s love in Christ, we offer him our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to him. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH P: Lord Jesus, you are the King of heaven and earth. We join the first Palm Sunday worshipers in praising and glorifying you for coming to this earth to be our Savior. Though you are one with God the Father and Lord of all, you humbled yourself and became one with us. Thanks be to you for living a life of perfect conformity to God s holy law in our place. Praise be to you for being obedient to death, even death on a cross, to redeem us from sin. Cause our voices to blend with those who sang your praises as you rode into Jerusalem. Move us to confess you before others as our Lord. Help us proclaim the message of peace and forgiveness to people of all nations. Use us to assure all people that your blood has cleansed them from sin and set them free from slavery to sin, death, and the devil. Move us to dedicate all we are and have to your glory. 9

Lord Jesus, you are King over all the earth. Bless the nations of this world with wise rulers and good government. Let peace prevail. Grant success to the businesses and industries of our land to serve for the common good. Cause all employers to be honest and fair-minded and all employees to be diligent and faithful. Look with favor on our nation s schools. Be with those who teach and those who learn. Comfort the sick and the afflicted with the assurance of your care and protection. Strengthen the faith of the dying. Special prayers and intercessions may follow. Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. Silent prayer. Dear Savior, as we walk with you this week toward Calvary, keep us focused on your purpose for coming into this world and on our calling to spread this wonderful message of salvation. Hear us for your mercy s sake. Amen. THE SACRAMENT P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them up to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is good and right so to do. P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who willingly died under the curse of this world s sin so that we may live forever in the light of God s blessing. Therefore with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song: 10

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY Sanctus 120 PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P: Blessed are you, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank you for sending your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which he has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil s power. By his incarnation, he became one with us. By his perfect life, he fulfilled your holy will. By his innocent death, he overcame hell. By his rising from the grave, he opened heaven. Invited by your grace and instructed by your Word, we approach your table with repentant and joyful hearts. Strengthen us through Christ s body and blood, and preserve us in the true faith until we feast with him and all his ransomed people in glory everlasting. C: Amen. 11

LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. LAMB OF GOD Agnus Dei 120 12
