THE SHIELD Official Publication of Fr. James B. Happy New Year 2019 - As your Grand Knight, I am proud of what we have done this past year. December was a busy month for us and we did very well. We lost many brothers this past year and we joined together for rosaries for their families. I have always said that we need to find our replacements. We need to continue to focus on bringing in new members this new year. That is our monthly focus, every month, one new member per council per month. It wiil not be easy to find our replacements, we do however have e- membership and our Insurance agent has just hired an assistant to help him with helping set appointments with members. If you need to meet with him for a insurance needs analysis, please do so. It is is so important that your family be protected. That is why Father McGivney started the Knights of Columbus. In the past few years we have not been increasing our membership and our insurance members. Our snow-birds will be going to warmer places for the next few months. I wish them all a great winter! Everyone else please try to come to our business meetings held on the first Monday of each month. Let s make 2019 a year to remember. Achieving Star Council again in 2019 is a goal we can reach. I want to have a membership drive from now to the end of the Fraternal Year. I need your support in making us a Star Council contender. Thank you to all who helped out during December last year. It was our Month to Shine and we did! We helped out the MRAW and the mentially impaired. Santa passed out presents to our special persons who are in need of our support. Parties were many both for the Mentally impaired who were hosted by the MRAW. The Childrens Christmas party, The ladies party and Adult Christmas party. It was a busy month! Food baskets were sorted out delivered. Lets keep that momentum and make 2019 a year to remember! PROGRAM DIRECTOR REPORT By Ken Podgorski, PGK, DGK I d like to thank Cindy Podgorski and Janice Polan for putting on a very successful children s Christmas party and Emily Ramm, Laura Geboski, Mary and Amber Thompson for also helping out at the event. Also a big thanks for Tony and Paula Bliss for being Santa and Mrs. Santa at this successful event. The free throw contest is also sometime at the end of the month. Not much else going on this month. Thanks to Janice Polan, Emily Ramm, Mary and Amber Thompson, and Laura Geboski for the needed help. A special thanks to Tony and Paula Bliss for their performance as Mr. and Mrs. Claus. What joy it gives to the Knights kids. The only Children's Christmas Party the Knights kids have. The adult Knights party was also entertaining. The MRAW parties were great. Just a reminder that any articles are due by the third Sunday of each month. I have an autoresponder set up to notify people via email when the Shield deadline is coming up. If you would like to be added to this notification, please drop me a line. Despite my best intentions, articles continue to be arriving in my inbox later than the deadline. Due to my increased hours working for Amazon, I have limited availability to work on the newsletter so I would appreciate everyone adhering to the deadline. Thanks to those that already do. If in doubt, send your article in early. It helps a great deal. If you have been to the website lately, you will notice we are using the Knights of Columbus template. I would like to update the officer s page. Everyone listed there should have a head shot photo as well as a brief bio, which may include how long you have been a knight or why you joined the knights or any other information you would like visitors to know about you. Please send your pictures and bio s directly to me and I will update the page. In its current state, the council site looks unfinished. Thank you.

Page 4 Knights of Columbus BENEFITS NEWS UPDATE YOUR BENEFICIARIES UPDATE YOUR BENEFICIARIES: Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of things. Take, for example, the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies. If your policy was applied for and issued several years ago, it may very well be that the person you originally selected as the beneficiary is no longer the person you would want to receive the policy proceeds. If you bought the policy when you were single, for example, you may have named your parents as beneficiaries. If you have since married, your policies should be updated to reflect your spouse as beneficiary. Maybe you ve had children since, who are not named on the policies. Most people list a primary beneficiary, who is specifically designated as the first in priority to receive policy proceeds. We also encourage the naming of a contingent beneficiary, an alternate person designated to receive policy proceeds, usually in the event that the original beneficiary pre-deceases the insured. I routinely call all of my policyholders for annual review appointments, usually near the anniversary date of your policy that is, the date it was originally issued. One of the matters that I ll discuss during this review is the status of your beneficiary designations. If they need updating, and they often do, I can complete the paperwork during that appointment. I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your family s needs. In Christ, *Receive a complete Family Needs Analysis at my expense.
