PASTOR S LETTER/ CARTA DEL PASTOR Dear Parishioners, This last week we celebrated All Saints Day. The most basic definition of a saint is: everyone that is in heaven. And, I think we all would agree that we all want to go to heaven. This most basic desire, rooted deep in our souls has been referred to by the Catholic Church as the universal call to holiness. The 2 nd Vatican Council said: all Christ's faithful, whatever be the conditions, duties and circumstances of their lives and indeed through all these, will daily increase in holiness, if they receive all things with faith from the hand of their heavenly Father and if they cooperate with the divine will. In this temporal service, they will manifest to all men the love with which God loved the world. Lumen Gentium #41 May we support each other and persevere in this great endeavor! Blessings, Fr. Bendiciones, Padre. Peter

DISCIPLESHIP, AND EVANGELIZATION Quote of the Week [T]he Mass is first and foremost a prayer, indeed the prayer par excellence. For at every Mass we encounter God in his word and in the body and blood of Christ. Made in God s image and likeness, we were made to know him, to love and to serve him. In prayer, we experience God s closeness and love; we speak to him, but we also learn to listen to his voice speaking in our hearts. Jesus himself teaches us, as he did his disciples, how to pray. From him we learn to call God our Father, to trust in his love, and to be constantly surprised by the signs of that love. When Jesus speaks of our need to be reborn (cf. Jn 3:15), he is in fact inviting us to accept his gift of new life in the Spirit. By his sacrifice on the cross, he has atoned for all our sins and enabled us to make a new beginning, to lead a truly spiritual life. In our encounter with him in prayer, and above all in the Eucharist, we experience the consolation of his presence, the grace of his forgiveness and the joy of his invitation to live fully our vocation as God s beloved children. When we go to Mass, maybe we come five minutes before and we start talking with the person beside me... but it is not time to chit-chat, it is the moment of silence to prepare for dialogue. It's a time to recollect one's heart to prepare for encountering Jesus. But silence is so important. This, therefore, is the greatest grace: to be able to experience that the Mass and the Eucharist is a privileged moment to be with Jesus, and, through Him, with God and with [our] brothers and sisters. -Pope Francis, 11/15/2017 Learning and Living the Faith Last year the Vatican put out a document which caused a bit of a stir, even though nothing in it was new. It discussed Catholic practice regarding the proper disposition of the remains of loved ones. Specifically, it required the burial or interment of bodily remains, even cremated ones, in a sacred place. It restated the Church s preference for burial of the body over cremation, and noted that, even when cremation is chosen for legitimate reasons, the ashes could not be scattered, nor preserved in mementos, jewelry, or other objects. In most circumstances, it is also not permitted to keep ashes in one s home (to do so requires specific permission from the Bishop and is only granted in exceptional cases). It explains this: From the earliest times, Christians have desired that the faithful departed become the objects of the Christian community s prayers and remembrance. Their tombs have become places of prayer, remembrance, and reflection. The faithful departed remain part of the Church who believes in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church. The reservation of the ashes of the departed in a sacred place ensures that they are not excluded from the prayers and remembrance of their family or the Christian community. It prevents the faithful departed from being forgotten, or their remains from being shown a lack of respect, which eventuality is possible, most especially once the immediately subsequent generation has too passed away.
