OUR LADY OF CANVEY & ENGLISH MARTYRS 224 Long Road, Canvey Island, Essex SS8 0JS www.ourladyofcanvey.org Parish Priest: Fr Eamonn Power Email: ourladyofcanvey@gmail.com Tel.: 01268 682599 Presbytery Tel.: 01268 680265 Office Hours: Monday-Friday 9.30-2.00pm Charity No 234092 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Dear friends in Christ This weekend we come to Palm Sunday, and so begins the holiest week of the entire Church calendar, leading as it does to the most important celebration in the entire year of the Church, the celebration of the Lord s Resurrection at Easter. The full narrated Passion reading begins to set the scene as we hear about the Lord s mock trial and the cruel taunts and shouts of the crowd, leading eventually to his crucifixion and death. These next few days are a wonderful opportunity to enter more deeply into prayer and the contemplation of the love of God revealed in Jesus. Remembering that Our Lady stood at the foot of the cross, let us ask her to pray for us and with over the next few days. Schedule for the next few days The morning schedule will be as normal on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with rosary and Mass. On Thursday Mass is at 8.00pm and is the Mass of the Lord s Supper with watching until 11.00pm On Friday, Good Friday, the main service is the Service of the Lord s Passion at 3.00pm, with the Divine Mercy chaplet followed by Stations of the Cross starting at 7.00pm. The Easter Vigil starts in the garden at 8.00pm on Saturday and Mass on Easter Sunday is at the normal Sunday time of 10.00am. All of this information is also printed elsewhere in this newsletter. Good Friday walk of witness The Good Friday Christian Walk of Witness takes place as usual this year and we have the opportunity to witness to our Christian faith with our friends from the other Christian denominations. I will be participating and I would love to see parishioners join me in this. Please meet near Saint Nicholas at 10.45am. Doreen Hind RIP At the time of writing, Thursday evening, the only news we have heard about our late friend Doreen is that she has been referred to the Coroner s office. More news will be given when he hear it ourselves. God Bless you all, Fr Eamonn

Holy Places collection Bishop Alan has asked us to remember especially the Holy Places in our hearts and prayers this year and to give whatever practical help we can in terms of the Good Friday Holy Places collection, especially in view of the very troubled current situation. Leonardo Cardinal Sandri writes: "The Church of Jerusalem [...] occupies a place of predilection in the solicitude of the Holy See and in the concern of the whole Christian world, even as interest for the Holy Places, and in particular for the city of Jerusalem, also emerges in the highest assemblies of the nations and important international organizations [...]. This attention is demanded even more nowadays by the serious religious, political and social problems existing there". Even today, the Middle East is witnessing a process that has torn apart the relations between the peoples of the region, creating a situation of such injustice that hoping for peace seems almost rash In order for the two-thousand-year-old Christian origins and continuing presence in Palestine to not only survive but even actively consolidate and work for the other communities with which it must live, it is necessary for Christians from all over the world to show their generosity, bringing to the Church of Jerusalem the charity of their prayers, the warmth of their understanding and the tangible sign of their solidarity".
