Sunday Readings & Reflections Prayer of the Week Liturgical Bits & Bytes Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is almost upon us. Ash Wednesday is: The beginning of Lent. The beginning of a time of reflection and preparation. The beginning of a time of joy. JOY!? WHY JOY?? Because Christ is truly risen. Because our time of Lenten preparation is looking forward to the celebration of Christ s Resurrection and the promise of our salvation. Because during Lent we don t pretend that Easter never happened. During Lent we look forward to celebrating that Easter resurrection in the best way possible, and we take this season to prepare ourselves for that celebration. We prepare by repentance and conversion. We prepare by making our lives more like Christ s so that we can be one with him in his glory. CHRIST IS RISEN! LET US PREPARE IN JOYFUL AND GRATEFUL ANTICIPATION. Alleluia Burial The Sunday before Ash Wednesday is the last Sunday that the assembly will sing the Alleluia until the Easter Vigil. During the season of Lent we fast from alleluias, so that we can sing them with greater joy and greater faith on Easter. Copyright 2008 Resource Publications, Inc. All rights reserved. (Matthew 6:30) Adult: What things do you worry about most frequently? Who do you deal with your worry? Youth: What can help you worry less about something that might happen? Lenten Prayer Grant, O Lord, that we may begin with holy fasting this campaign of Christian service, so that as we take up battle against spiritual evils, we may be armed with weapons of self-restraint. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Saint of the Week St. Katharine Drexel On March 3 rd the Church celebrates the Memorial of Saint Katharine Drexel. She was born in Philadelphia on November 26, 1858. Her birth mother died five weeks later. Her father later married Emma Bouvier and it was from her that Katharine and her two sisters learned the lessons of love of God and neighbor. Katharine gave her fortune and her life to serve the poor and oppressed, particularly African American and Native American people. She helped finance many missions among them. In 1891, she founded a missionary community, The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. The Eucharist was the center of and sustenance for her life. Katharine Drexel died at the age of 97 on March 3, 1955. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 1, 2000 and is the second American born saint. St. Katharine Drexel is the patron of racial justice and philanthropists. Parish Offertory Offertory numbers were not available as of press time. They will be in next week s bulletin. That something is God s grace. And it s drawing us to God s merciful embrace. Join us in exploring the beauty and grace that awaits us. Finding their institution in Christ and their origin in salvation history, they are God s gift of life to His children.
In Our Parish and Diocese Wednesday, March 8 6:00PM Notre Dame Church Hall 116 Silver St. Waterville Engaging our younger generations has become a real challenge for parish communities, as we ve discovered... (Pew, 2010) 60% of those who leave the Catholic Church do so between the ages of 13-23. The need for effective youth ministry is crucial. Of those who leave, 50% join a Protestant denomination and 50% become unaffiliated. This DOES and WILL affect our parishes. They leave not only for reasons of doctrine or theology, it s about their experience. How does the parish meet their diverse spiritual needs and help them to feel like they belong? These younger generations (Gen Z, Millennials) are different from the former ones (Gen X, Boomers, the Silent Generation). In order to engage them, we must understand them and their needs.
