RENEW MY CHURCH UPDATE A few weeks ago, I wrote about a new initiative Cardinal Cupich has begun in our Archdiocese of Chicago. It is called Renew My Church (RMC). I told you it is, in my opinion, the most exciting thing to happen in my 48 years of priesthood. I explained it was about renewal. It has both practical and spiritual dimensions, with the spiritual being the more important. This is in response to changing demographics around the Archdiocese, and addressing that so many younger people are no longer practicing their faith. I mentioned RMC has three Goals: 1. Make Intentional Disciples out of our faithful. This entails evangelization at every level. 2. Building Communities. We want vibrant parishes and schools that will attract people. 3. Inspire Witness. We need to excite others about our faith. Our Archdiocese has 351 parishes and has been split into about 90 parish groupings. Two pilot groups have already completed much of their initial work. In Humboldt Park three very small parishes have combined into one, while maintaining the three churches as worship sites so people can go to Mass in familiar surroundings. But there will be one pastor, parish staff, pastoral council and finance council. The three become one and will have a new name. Divine Infant is now in the first official wave for RMC. We recently began by meeting with Cardinal Cupich and the pastors of our phase, and then spent 3 days of training at Mundelein Seminary. It was intense but very worthwhile. I feel ready to help launch our parish into RMC. Here are the pastors and parishes of our Grouping; Fr. Edgar Rodriquez of St. Barbara Fr. Denis Condon of St. Louise de Marillac Fr. Mike Ahlstrom of Divine Infant Fr. Tim Fiala of Divine Providence Each pastor will select three parishioners, and each school principal 2 parents, to lead us through RMC. These groupings will meet 7 times themselves and at 3 parish meetings between February and May to discuss strategy for the future. There will be town hall meetings for all the parish, so you can give your input before we make any concrete proposals. Cardinal Cupich wants renewal to come from the bottom up, and not imposed from above. Proposals from the parish grouping will be reviewed by a commission and forwarded to Cardinal Cupich for his final decision. While there is no talk of our grouping combining parishes, there are areas where we can collaborate. Already we are planning a Lenten mission for all four parishes. Also, I want to insure we will always have a strong Catholic School to serve our children. We need to explore how we can assure our Catholic school for the future. Another area that concerns me is youth ministry. Right now, we are doing nothing for our young people after they are confirmed in 8 th grade. While we cannot afford a full-time youth minister, the four parishes might combine and share one youth minister among us. With 80% of those we confirm abandoning the practice of our faith by the time they are 21, there must be something we can do to bolster their faith. These are just a few examples of what we might be doing with RMC. I am very hopeful we can revitalize our parish and our archdiocese with an ever-deepening faith. We can reactivate those who have become inactive and evangelize those who have not yet learned the good news of Jesus. Please join me in supporting and praying for the success of RMC. Father Mike Ahlstrom

LIGHTING OF THE PARISH ADVENT WREATH Weekend Masses: Dec. 2-3, 9-10, 16-17, 23-24 GIVING TREE Please pick up an ornament in the back of the church, for the children of our sister parish, St. Martin De Porres. Let's make this Christmas a memorable one! If you drop of your gift off during the week please bring it to the rectory. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE IN CHURCH. Inviting individuals, couples, families, groups The Advent Wreath with 4 candles has long been a symbol of this beautiful liturgical season of anticipation and longing. Please consider lighting the candle(s) at one of the Weekend Masses. Sign up on the poster in the back of Church. Please arrive 15 minutes before Mass and meet A member of the Liturgy Team in the back of Church who will give you very simple instructions. Thank you! The Women's Guild CHRIST, KING OF ALL On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the King. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only king over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. At the end of time as we know it, Christ's work of restoring all things to unity and harmony with their Creator God will be completed. This Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd and our King, we recognize our own calling to participate in Christ's saving work by caring for those whom Jesus calls "the least ones" (Matthew 25:45). TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today we have a modern feast, less than a century old, and placed at the very end of the liturgical cycle of Sundays only in 1969. In 1925, the world was in a sorry state from the vantage point of Pope Pius XI. The winds of war had swept the map of Europe raw, and ancient Christian dynasties had fallen in Russia and Spain. Although the Great War had ended, wars were breaking out everywhere. Fascism was already in control in Italy, and Nazism was on the horizon for Germany. The disorder making its claim on the human race was, the pope felt, an insult to the Divine Order. Pius XI designated the last Sunday in October as a day of universal recognition of the kingship of Christ. Creating this feast was an act of bravery by the pope, who was standing up against idolatry of the state and the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, things that are not hard to detect in today's world as well. In 1969 it seemed fitting to move the feast to a place of honor at the end of the year, a way of summing up the whole movement of the liturgical year toward the perfection of the Kingdom of God. In recent decades, many Protestant churches have adopted this day from the new Roman calendar, so it is shared now with the Church of England, the Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Lutheran churches, and others. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. SPIRITO! WINTER CONCERTS Please join us for this favorite holiday tradition! Making Spirits Bright (for 10 years!)
