Since Christ is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? From My Life Flows on in Endless Song, ELW #763 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, We re heading into a new season in our life together. During May, we celebrated Sunday and the end of the Sunday School year. For many families, this is the time of year where kids are getting out of school for the summer or graduating to begin something different. At church, we ll be taking a break from some of our regular programs and focusing on some special events for the summer. In worship, we ll also be taking a break from the Narrative Lectionary and focusing on a new theme for preaching this summer. The theme for preaching this summer is Singing Our Faith. A few weeks ago, I took an informal poll of people s favorite hymns, and this summer we will take a closer look at those hymns and how they feed our faith. For each hymn, I ve chosen Scripture readings that are referenced in the hymn or that enrich the meaning. One of my favorite hymns is My Life Flows on in Endless Song, which I ve quoted at the beginning of this letter. It reminds me of that faith in Christ casts out fear and gives us a reason to sing. If Christ has defeated sin and death and is Lord of all, how can I keep from loving, forgiving, laughing, serving, and singing? Christ truly gives us something to sing about. Lutherans, in particular, are known for their love of music going all the way back to Martin Luther himself. Luther thought music was a gift of God with the power to proclaim the Gospel. He once said, Next to the Word of God, music deserves highest praise. During the Reformation, Luther wrote several hymns, including A Mighty Fortress is Our God, that proclaimed the message of Christ s victory. We can see Martin Luther s legacy in the many Lutheran composers and musicians that have followed in his footsteps, and Lutheran schools and colleges are often known for their music programs. Orfordville Lutheran also has a history of loving the gift of music. I have spoken to many members about the choir program. I especially enjoyed hearing about how the choir used to walk in singing Holy, Holy, Holy,

Lord God Almighty! The gift of music continues to inspire faith in our congregation through the faithful work of our church musicians. I hope this summer you will learn something about our songs of faith. More importantly, I hope God will move our hearts through the gift of music to greater devotion and greater love. May God make your heart sing! Your brother in Christ, Pastor Andy Twiton UPCOMING EVENTS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: June Preaching Preview The summer preaching theme is Singing Our Faith.
