From the Pastor For the rest of the year we will be donating the can money we receive on the 5th Sunday to the March of Dimes. One of our own little ones is receiving aid from them & it helps to put a face on the campaign. Eli Wheaton (Zeke s little brother) receives help from the March of Dimes, especially for his oxygen. This is an immense help to his mom, Susie Anderson. Also, you will notice the beautiful flowers in front of our sign. They were planted in honor of and in memory of Lynn Smetko, Carole Doubleday s daughter. The council & I would like to have you prayerfully consider donating 10% of your Tax Stimulus Rebates to the church. When you receive your check from Uncle Sam, please take some time to prayerfully consider what God s Holy Spirit might be calling you to do with this check. Pastor Tina will be on vacation from June 17 thru July 11. If you need Pastoral care during this time, please call Nate Anderson at or the office at We always need stamps! Donate whatever comfortably fits your budget -a roll, a book or two or even just a few stamps. Just think- if 10 people donate 10 stamps, it equals a whole roll! From the Council President 2
Due to my sister s sudden illness, I have no report for you this month. The council president s report will be back next month. Nate Anderson CELL PHONES vs. THE BIBLE I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bibles like we treat our cell phones? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn t live without it? What if we gave it to kids as gifts? What if we used it when we traveled? What if we used it in case of emergency? This is something to make you go...hmmm... where is my Bible? Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think, Where are my priorities? And no dropped calls! Newsletters will be assembled on Friday, June 20. It s time to update our Church Directory again. If you have any kind of change - address, phone, cell phone or , please notify the office at or drop the secretary a note and let us know. And yes, we can keep info such as cell number or just for office use if you request it. - Don t forget to send in your pledge or offering even if you re on vacation. Have you caught up? Don t Become a Burden By not planning for the future we guarantee that we will leave our children with a tremendous burden. Just about the time they are preparing for their own retirement and their children s 6
college education, adult children often are overwhelmed with decision-making for their aging parents. People say, I don t want to be a burden to my children. But unintentionally most of us make it even harder for our children by not clearly defining our wishes or preferences. We can help them out by asserting control over our future health care, residential choices, and even how we will die. There are specific and discreet steps we can take to shape our own destiny. Many of thest tasks only take a few moments of your time, some take a little research and others may require professional assistance. None of them are extremely costly or difficult. So why don t more of us do this type of planning? Seniors are concerned about losing control of their life and being a burden to their grown children but many just don t know what to do. For instance, the majority of people want to die at home, but very few do. Become familiar with your options and make your preferences known while thinking clearly, while free from pain and prior to an emergency or crisis. The loss of a parent is difficult enough for an adult child. We can save them additional grief by doing the following: Clean house: get rid of all the worthless clutter and unimportant stuff. Prepare and organize the important paopers and throw out the unimportant ones. Prepare advanced directives and tell others what they contain and where they are locate and make our own funeral plans and ensure there are sufficiant funds to pay for it. Leave our legacy through writings, photo albums, heirloom assignment and recording of family stories. You can avoid becoming a burden to your children by taking control of your end of life with as much care, intent and forethought as you have lived the rest of your life. 7
Adopt-a-Road 2008 Schedule Adopt a Road Clean up along our portion of Milwaukee Road resumes today after the service, and will be held on every third Sunday of the month. May 18, 2008 June 14, 2008 (Saturday) 9:30 AM here at church July 20, 2008 August 17, 2008 September 21, 2008 October 18, 2008 Please dress appropriately in comfortable clothing and sensible shoes. Safty vests and gloves will be provided. If you would like to volunteer, contact Norb Larson for more details. THANK Y U! I just can t thank you enough for your thoughtful gift of fruit and a card and Bob s call. It really touched my heart. Thanks again. You are all special to me. P.S.: I love fruit- Phyllis Steele This year the Synod Office received a total of 1214 Midwife kits and 1207 Hospice kits, which is a 5% increase over last year. A complete report will be available in the Synod s April/May newsletter. CHRISTIAN WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS part 1 1. Pray 2. Go to bed on time. 3. Get up on time so you can start the day unrushed. 4. Say 'No' to projects that won't fit into your time schedule, or that will compromise your mental health. 8
5. Delegate tasks to capable others. 6. Simplify and unclutter your life. 7. Less is more (although one is often not enough, two are often too many!) 8. Allow extra time to do things and to get to places. 9. Pace yourself. Spread out big changes and difficult projects over time; don't lump the hard things all together. 10. Take one day at a time. 11. Separate worries from concerns. If a situation is a concern, find out what God would have you do and let go of the anxiety. If you can't do anything about a situation, forget it. 12. Live within your budget; don't use credit cards for ordinary purchases. 13. Have backups; an extra car key in your wallet, an extra house key buried in the garden, extra stamps, etc. 14. K.M.S. (Keep Mouth Shut). This single piece of advice can prevent an enormous amount of trouble. 15. Do something for the Kid in You everyday. 16. Carry a Bible with you to read while waiting in line. 17. Get enough rest. Part 2 will be in the July newsletter. Literacy Tutors Needed: The Stateline Literacy Council ( is seeking tutors to teach English (to both native and non-native speakers). A tutor training session will be held on Sunday, June 22nd, from 1:00 until 4:00 pm, at 822 Broad Street in downtown Beloit (across from the Salvation Army). Refreshments will served. If interested, please call the Council at or contact Ted (ted@ statelineliteracycouncil.org). Help someone learn English! No knowledge of English grammar is required--only a little patience. Thanks very much!! Ted Rueter, Program Manager, Stateline Literacy Council 9
