THE CHURCH GATHERS The candle is lit as a prayer for peace. Words of Welcome and Announcements Prelude Prelude on Evan *Please stand if you are able. *Call to Worship Gordon Young (1919-1998) One: Here, in this place, with these people, All: We find the One who leads us into God s Kingdom. One: Here, in God s kingdom, with our sisters and brothers in Christ, All: We find a feast prepared for us. One: Here, in God s sanctuary, at this table of grace, All: We eat of the goodness that heals us, we drink of the mercy that is God s gift. *Hymn 401 Here in This Place Call to Reconciliation GATHER US IN When we gather to praise our God, we remember that we are people who tend to choose our will over God s. Accepting God s power to create us as new people in Christ, let us confess our sins before god and one another, as we pray. Prayer of Confession One: When in the lonely neighbor next door, you come to us, but we do not recognize you; when in the cries of children sleeping in the street, you call, but we do not hear you; when in the laughing hug of an old friend, you bless us, but we do not feel you. All: Forgive us and make us new. One: When in the immigrant who sits beside us on the bus, you accept us, but we cannot shake your hand; when in the family member who tells us to forget it, you forgave us, but we cannot let go of what they have done to us. All: Forgive us and make us new. One: When in a broken world, we see your mission, but we insist on doing everything our way; when in the outcast, the poor, the needy, we find you, but we do not care what is happening to you; when in your death and resurrection, we find life, but we dare not believe you. All: Forgive us and make us new. Assurance of Pardon Silence is observed. One: There is no shame in the good news, only hope, only life, only joy, only peace. 2

All: Even now, God is forgiving us; even now, God is making us new. Thanks be to God. Amen. *Sung Response 591 Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! HALLE, HALLE Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION Invitation Thanksgiving Prayer One: Holy God, we praise you. Let the heavens be joyful and the earth be glad. All: We bless you for creating the whole world, for your promises to your people Israel, and for Jesus Christ in whom your fullness dwells. One: Born of Mary, he shares our life. Eating with sinners, he welcomes us. Guiding his children, he leads us. Visiting the sick, he heals us. All: Dying on the cross, he saves us. Risen from the dead, he gives new life. Living with you, he prays for us. One: With thanksgiving we take this bread and this cup and proclaim the death and resurrection of our Lord. Receive our sacrifice of praise. Pour out your Holy Spirit upon us that this meal may be a communion in the body and blood of our Lord. Make us one with Christ and with all who share this feast. Unite us in faith, encourage us with hope, inspire us to love, that we may serve as your faithful disciples until we feast at your table in glory. All: We pray to you, eternal God, through Christ your word is made flesh, in the holy and life-giving Spirit, now and forever. Amen. FAITH FAMILY ANNOUNCEMENTS Habitat Workdays Woodbourne McCabe Community project work days are August 18 & 25. Come in your work clothes and be prepared to have a great time getting dirty. This long time mission of Faith is one of its most rewarding. We also need people to provide lunch for the working volunteers. Contact Natalie Wallace or the church office for details. Our Sunday Child Caretaker Rosemary Miller, our child caretaker is ill and won t be here for some time. Her daughter said she would appreciate cards; please send to the church office to be forwarded. If you are interested in helping out with childcare while Rosemary recovers, please speak to Robin Nemser. CARES CARES Food Pantry is currently running low on PEANUT BUTTER, JELLY, AND CEREAL. On behalf of GEDCO CARES' clients, thank you for your continued outpouring of generosity. Yet we are still experiencing a great need and hope that supporters like you can assist us again in providing food for Baltimore's men, women, and families. Shredding by Andre Andre Slacum is a Faith Church member who volunteers here at Faith; one of his favorite activities is shredding. He provides a service to Faith Church by offering his shredding services here at the church. All you have to do is bring your sensitive documents to church and place them in the box in the workroom marked "Shredding for Andre" or give them to Robin Nemser. You will be helping Andre, and he will return the favor to you. Start purging those file drawers! Joys and Concerns may be written before the service in a book in the narthex. The book will be brought to the minister before the prayer. IPSC UPDATE August 1, 2018 Here are the QUESTIONS to be asked of each candidate for Interim Pastor. Please give us your thoughts on the most important functions an Interim Pastor brings to a church in transition. What strengths or relevant experience might you bring to this position? What motivates your interest in seeking a position as an Interim Pastor, as opposed to a position as a permanent Pastor in your own church? How would you segment your weekly activities in your ministry here? Give us examples of a success and a challenge in a recent position and what you learned from each. Tell us a bit about the characteristics of the congregations you have served (e.g. size, urban/suburban, demographics -age, race, etc.) Everyone has certain aspects of their work that they especially enjoy and some aspects that they find less enjoyable. What parts of your work as a pastor give you greatest satisfaction? And which responsibilities the least? How do you involve children in your church services? What is your approach to children ministry? Where in the priority of importance is your thinking on sermons? Give us some insight into how you approach preparing a sermon. How do you create a series of sermons over the church year? How would you characterize your sermon s content, i.e. what are you seeking to accomplish? More broadly, tell us how you approach crafting a worship service. What roles did lay folks/volunteers play in the congregations you have served? Our country is now obviously very partisan and divided with many religious groups claiming Christian virtue on their side. What are your thoughts on politics in the pulpit? How should/could a church relate to its neighbors/neighborhood? What in your experience have been the best strategies for church growth? Our congregation has shown strong commitment to various social justice issues, and environmental ones, and it is important to us that we continue to work for a more fair, inclusive, responsible community. Talk a bit about how you as a pastor see your role in those conversations. In what aspect of your ministry do you feel you might improve upon going forward? And now a question for Faith church members: Might there be some subject that you would like the IPSC to add to the above list? If so, please send it to the church office and we will add it to this list! 6
