NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 11, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK When Archbishop Myers asked me to become your pastor, I had just completed three years as spiritual director for the college seminary at Seton Hall, a position I sometimes described to my friends as one that in many ways suited my particular strengths and likings. The privilege of helping guide a new generation of future priests was a very satisfying experience in itself and one that afforded delightful hope about the Church s future, which is in good hands if our students are typical aspirants to the priesthood. The post also gave me the opportunity to read more extensively than I had the chance to do for many years. I love reading and using the results of it in homilies and talks, so that assignment offered me ideal enjoyment. But for the first thirty-six years of my priesthood, I worked in parishes, where priests offer people spiritual care through privileged access to their lives, with all the human joys and sorrows and trials that come with them. This is the central calling of diocesan priests, and I hope my efforts to serve you in it will help all of us fulfill God s purposes. I don t want to give you the impression that I m the least reluctant, much less resentful, at my new assignment. To me, it is another particular calling from the Lord. I have valued and enjoyed all my assignments as a priest, and, in them, have trusted the will of God, who, after all, is in overall charge of things and has his good reasons for what he does. The bothersome drudgery of moving is nearly over. (It took me three days to find my toe-nail clippers and my alarm clock.) Thanks to all who made it go well. I m grateful too for the kind welcome you gave me my first week here, especially for your warm greetings at last weekend s Masses. I also ran into at least fifteen people who knew me from previous assignments, including four couples I married in my first one, Holy Trinity in Hackensack. Please be patient with me as I try to learn your names. A few people have a wonderful ability to remember names right away. I envy them greatly, but could never become one of them any more than I can turn gravel into diamonds. A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME I was born in Liberty, New York. After living briefly in my father s hometown, Simpson, PA (near Scranton), we moved to Newark, where my mother was from. My father was a watchman and a janitor for the Newark Public Library, besides working even more hours at various security jobs to make ends meet. My mom worked for the Essex County Blood Bank. Later we moved to Kearny. I have two brothers and two sisters, all of whom live in North Jersey. 3 I attended St. Rose of Lima grammar school in Newark, Seton Hall Prep and University, and our Archdiocese s Immaculate Conception Seminary, before being ordained with the class of 1974. My other assignments were Our Lady of the Visitation, Paramus; St. Michael s, Palisades Park; and St. Mary s, Nutley, where I was pastor from 1998-2010. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 12:32-48. In today s Gospel, Jesus tells his followers to light their lamps and be like servants who await their master s return from a wedding, ready to open the door immediately when he comes and knocks. Jesus tells them, You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. The Gospel helps us understand that Jesus, the Son of Man, will come back from Heaven someday and that we must be ready for him. No one knows when Jesus will come, but we know he will come because he has told us so. We stay ready by putting God first in our lives. We need to pray to God every day. We can tell him when we are happy, sad, or scared. We must follow his rules. We need to give to the poor and those in need, take care of the sick, forgive people when they hurt our feelings, and feed the hungry. If we do these things with all our hearts, then we will be ready for Jesus! Jesus says for the servants to light their lamps and wait for their master s return. MISSION OF THE WEEK Every morning when you wake up you can pray this prayer, O Lord, let me be ready for you. Let me help the people who need help. Give me the strength to do your will so that I will be ready for you when you come. Amen. 6
