Phone: 308-532-0250 Fax: 308-532-5291 Email: frstluth@msn.com www.firstevlutheran-np.com John 8:31-36 31 Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. 33 They answered him, We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; the son has a place there forever. 36 So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. I served as pastor in a congregation which was just a few blocks away from Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. Seminarians would attend our worship at Holy Trinity. I came to know many students over the eleven years I served in that place. One of the most memorable was a man who served as intern at my congregation. His name was Dave. Dave knew very well about freedom and the lack of it. Many years before I met Dave, he had been a high-powered executive at an international company which was experiencing great success in the marketplace. The growth was staggering. It was in that place in life that he committed an unthinkable life ending crime. While intoxicated, he drove his car through a red light, killing two small children. He will live with a haunting remorse his entire life. Yet, something happened to that irresponsible executive while in prison. CONTACT NUMBERS: Pastor: Rev. Arnold Flater 563-542-5434 Church Council, President: Jerry Stoll: 308-534-2219 Custodian: Volunteers Financial Secretary: Claudette Nelson Music & Preschool Director: Gail Jensen: 308-534-4290 Office Manager: Olene Beck: 308-386-8677 Jr. F.L.Y.: Emily McCreery: 308-530-7175 Sr. F.L.Y.: Mindee Mohr: 308-539-8549 Sunday School: Jill Falcon, 308-520-5131 Although he had been connected to the church in various ways up until that time, Dave heard the Truth of the Gospel in a new way in prison. The power of reformation took hold of his life in a dramatic way. He took an online course in pastoral theology while in prison. After fourteen years in prison, he was given an early release. He then enrolled and was accepted at Wartburg Seminary. After his internship at my congregation and seminary graduation, he was called to serve a congregation in Iowa. The Freedom Dave experiences is the same that you and I know every day. Even now there are those who, perhaps rightly, feel that he should still be incarcerated. The gift of the Reformation is that Martin Luther reminds us that while we were, and it seems still are, prisoners to sin, Christ makes us free! Here in lies the freedom so carefully and boldly proclaimed by Jesus in a time in which his hearers were slaves to a powerful regime with a world-wide grip of power. You are FREE. Yes, you are free indeed. Whatever attempts to blur or confuse that truth stands in violation of the Gospel. Celebrate Reformation! Celebrate this truth, "THE TRUTH MAKES US FREE.

Congregational Council Meeting Highlights, October 21, 2018 MISSION STATEMENT: To make Christ known in our love for one another, by service to our neighbor, and in worship of God. Council voted to provide spiral ham and roast beef at the Installation Celebration potluck for the Reverend Arnold Flater. Council is requesting those who attend to bring a side dish and/or dessert to share. Emily McCreery volunteered to organize a committee to assess items throughout the church and determine if they are regularly used and dispose of items that are unused. Thank you to the Call Committee, the Council, FELC Staff, Pastor Steve Berke, Pastor Meysing and members and friends for a great welcome to First Evangelical. Olene and Gail will meet with Pastor for staff meetings every Tuesday starting at 10:30 am. Looking forward to the many great activities at FELC. I am enjoying learning about the many great long-standing ministry activities you have at FELC Held Confirmation Orientation this past week. Looking forward to the year of study of Martin Luther and the Small Catechism. We will begin our learning with a three week viewing and discussion of the movie Luther. Then Study 10 Commandments. I will plan to take Monday as my day off. I will be available for emergency situations on Monday. Full minutes and financials available in the narthex and office. Thank you for thinking of us on our anniversary. We really enjoyed the beautiful flower arrangement! Randy & Becky Robinson First Lutheran Church: Thank you, my Dears for the lovely bouquet and the cards. One from the CCC committee and the picture and card from the First Lutheran Preschool, a darling group. I enjoyed them all very much. It was so nice to be thought of on my 95th birthday. ~ Leona DeVol ~ 2018 Santa Cop Referral Form Every year since 1985 the Santa Cop program reaches out to help children in the North Platte and surrounding areas, who would have otherwise not received gifts for Christmas. The Reverend Steven Meysing will be preaching and leading the Installation Rite on behalf of our Nebraska Synod followed by a potluck dinner in the East Fellowship Hall. Council will provide ham and roast beef. Please bring a side dish and/or dessert to share. We look forward to sharing this special time as we celebrate the ministry of Pastor Arnold within our congregation and community. We would be delighted if you wanted to join us Wednesday 6:00pm Service (One-half hour) Worship with a simple spoken liturgical service, utilizing the Scripture readings and message from the previous Sunday. Normally, the sacrament of Holy is shared. Sunday 8:15am Traditional Worship Traditional worship aims to faithfully and energetically carry forward the best of our heritage as Lutheran Christians. Using a variety of liturgies and hymns, we gather around Word and Sacrament with an order of service in the classic Western tradition of the church. The sacrament of Holy is celebrated on every Sunday. Sunday 10:30am Contemporary Worship Designed for those who love praising God in a spirited, contemporary worship format, the 10:30am service provides a welcoming blend of the familiar and the innovative. Each week the worship band supports our singing, and the pastor proclaims the good news of Christ. The service begins in an informal style with greetings and opening songs, and then moves to the scriptural Word (from the lectionary) and our sharing in the Lord's Supper each week.
