Congratulations to the St. Mary Magdalene Confirmation Class of 2018 WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES May 6, 2018 (1 John 4:7-10; Jn. 15:9-17) Vinal Van Benthem ofs We hear it so often that we hardly even notice it any more. Love one another. OK, but with the exception of an occasional office romance we might ask what love one another has to do with work? Maybe part of our problem is that we have such a limited understanding of the word love. In English, more often than not the word love tends to take on a romantic connotation (notice my reference to an office romance ). The Oxford dictionary defines love as: (1) deep affection, fondness; (2) sexual passion; (3) sexual relations; and (4) beloved one, sweetheart. Maybe part of our problem is that we forget about (1). If we have deep affection for someone if we are fond of them we are going to act in a certain way toward them. There are things we will, and will not, do. For instance, if we hold someone in deep affection we are not likely to enter into an unhealthy competition with them. On the contrary, we may actually find ourselves wanting them to win! If we are fond of someone we will speak well of them and become upset when we hear someone else putting them down. Another clue. The word love in our culture usually comes back to us to what makes us happy. But God always points to the other and what makes the other happy. What if the other is our boss? Returning a fair day s work for a fair day s pay will probably make him quite happy. What if the other is our customer? How happy will she be if we deliver a faulty product or fail to live up to our promises? What if the other is our employee? It would certainly make them happy if we showed genuine concern about providing safe working conditions. There are many ways to love one another if we can only learn to understand the word differently. God invites us to hold one another in deep affection, to work for the good of the other. What would our workplace look like if we responded to God s invitation? 2 May 6, 2018
