ANNUAL REP RT 2013

BEY ND 100 YEARS! Dear Friends, Beyond a hundred years. LSS is officially past the hundred year mark. As we look to the future, and hopefully to another hundred years and beyond, I am reminded of 2 Peter 3:8. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. What a humbling notion. While we are proud that our agency has been able to live out our mission for so long, our work always begins anew. And as God has continuously been the protector of the sick, poor, outcast and others in need, so we at LSS strive to express by word and deed a portion of that special love God has for those we serve each and every day. During the fiscal year covered in this annual report, we were blessed to be able to expand our services to include home health care. LSS Home Health Care provides necessary services from the comfort of one s own home with an emphasis on treating the patient with the utmost dignity and respect. We also were able to relocate the Faith Mission administrative offices, community kitchen and clinics to a building more suited to our needs. Finally, this past fiscal year saw the addition of a new mobile food pantry stop to our route in Malta, Ohio, meaning more food is now available to hungry families with few other options. As always, these program expansions, as well as continuing on with all our other services, are not possible without God s grace and the dedicated support of our faithful donors and volunteers He sends our way. Each year at annual report time, I am always amazed with the thousands upon thousands of supporters we have that allow this agency to continue running. Candidly, without your support and care, we could not begin to do what we do. So while our hundred years may not compare with the thousands of years, our thousands of supporters certainly widely reflect God s love for all of us and make an impact in our world. Thank you for your support, and I hope over the next year and into the future we are able to continue fulfilling LSS mission of creating a better world by serving people in need and all to God s glory. With sincerest thanks, The Rev. Larry A. Crowell President and CEO 1

Affordable Housing We provide 21 affordable housing communities with 888 apartments in Franklin, Fairfield, Delaware, Ashland, Richland, Marion, Knox, Clark, Trumbull and Belmont counties to serve the needs of people who meet income, age or disability requirements. These communities provide residents with dignity, safety and a caring environment. Many of our sites have service coordinators available to link residents with services that allow them to maintain their independence. Disaster Response Acting as the statewide coordinating body for Lutheran Disaster Response, our staff and volunteers serve people impacted by natural disasters. Trained responders provide material and emotional support, debris removal, case management and referral to other emergency assistance programs. Faith Mission Faith Mission offers a safe environment for up to 266 homeless men and women on an emergency walk-in basis. In addition to shelter, Faith Mission provides food and clothing while helping individuals with access to longerterm solutions such as permanent housing and employment assistance, as well as medical, dental and vision care. Additionally, The Community Kitchen at Faith Mission serves three meals a day to anyone who is hungry. Faith Housing of Fairfield County Faith Housing of Fairfield County provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and permanent supportive housing services in the Lancaster area. Case managers work with clients to offer long-term solutions to increase their employment, housing and income opportunities. Additional services are provided to veterans through emergency shelter and transitional housing programs. Food Pantries LSS four permanent food pantries in Columbus, Lancaster and Caldwell and mobile pantry, which serves Gallia, Lawrence, Meigs, Morgan and Scioto counties, serve the needs of thousands of people year-round. Hungry families and individuals receive food as well as health care screenings, back-to-school supplies and other services. Home Health Care LSS Home Health Care offers physical, occupational and speech therapy, orthopedic and cardiac rehabilitation, pain management, registered and licensed practical nurses, and wound specialists. Additionally, assistance with cooking, cleaning, personal care and other household services are available. Services are available in Franklin, Delaware, Licking, Marion, Morrow, Richland, Knox, Fairfield and Ashland counties. Program Descriptions Northern Ohio Ministries Northern Ohio Ministries addresses the needs of people in Ashland and surrounding counties by providing case management services, food and material support. Four transitional houses, along with a resource center providing services such as goal setting and planning, are utilized to assist families in moving from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Emergency food assistance is also available through various programs, including monthly food distributions and a hot meal program. Ohio Benefit Bank The Ohio Benefit Bank is an internet-based income enhancement program that connects people to public benefits and tax refunds for which they qualify. By maximizing these, the program can increase the available cash on hand and strengthen the ability for people to move toward selfsufficiency and stability. Senior Services Independent Living Facility Kensington Place offers 126 elegantly-appointed apartments with gracious amenities for older adults who wish to remain an active and independent part of a thriving community. 6 Assisted Living Care With 48 apartments, Lutheran Village of Ashland allows residents to enjoy the lifestyle benefits of assisted living with a special emphasis on the changing needs of each individual. Our personal care services focus on preserving independence and quality of life. Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitative Care The Good Shepherd, which accommodates up to 125 residents, is committed to providing the finest in nursing and rehabilitative care. TGS offers comprehensive rehabilitative care, transitional care, complex medical and skilled nursing care, memory care and respite stays. Social Enterprise The social enterprise initiative equips unemployed shelter residents to qualify and maintain permanent employment in the wider community. Clients are temporarily hired, trained and prepared to enter the workforce via LSS-operated businesses, which currently includes Fairhaven Lawn Care, Patriot Pride Painting Co. and Freshbox Catering, ultimately learning new job skills that will assist them as they become self-sufficient. For more information or to volunteer, please call 614-228-5200.
