4 MEN S PROGRAM I m building my life again. Sometimes our guests are referred to UGM-TC by social workers or through the courts. Some are brought to us by family members or friends. But Joshua believes divine intervention led him to our door. Joshua never thought he would need the services of a homeless shelter. I never had a drug addiction or an alcohol problem, he says. He had always worked hard and supported his family until his children were on their own. But when his last job came to an end and his savings ran out, he had little choice in the matter. I literally just stumbled upon UGM-TC, Joshua remembers. I was supposed to go to a place in Arlington and Google Maps brought me here. He was grateful for a place to stay, but even more so for somewhere to start over, get a foothold and build my life again. the Personal Social Adjustment skill-building program and ALPHA, our Bible-based course, have made the most impact on him. ALPHA is life-changing, Joshua says. It slows me down and teaches me more intimately about Scripture than I ever thought possible. Our ALPHA group is more like a family. There s so much interaction. Joshua says his life had always been grounded in Scripture, but that our Men s Program gave him the opportunity to go deeper into God s Word. Every morning before my feet hit the floor, I read Scripture. I like to read a Proverb a day and then meditate on it. He tells us that Today, Joshua is interviewing for jobs and looks forward to being in a place of his own again. As an Army and Army Reserve veteran, he is also eligible for benefits, which the Mission has helped him to access. Your giving means a lot more than you ll ever know! he tells you. BE RENEWED IN THE SPIRIT OF YOUR MIND, AND THAT YOU PUT ON THE NEW MAN WHICH WAS CREATED ACCORDING TO GOD, IN TRUE RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HOLINESS. Ephesians 4:23 24 n k j v
5 IN 2017, YOUR SUPPORT HELPED: Provide 46,833 sheltered nights to men residents. Secure housing and income for 82 Men s Program graduates.
6 WOMEN S PROGRAM I felt safe. Thirty years of experience in education hadn t prepared Zoe for the prospect of homelessness. When her last job ended, she had nowhere to go and was thankful when a friend took her in. However, when her friend s daughter returned home, Zoe was again looking at life on the streets. Thinking about a homeless shelter was a little bit much for me, Zoe admits. I had seen the Mission, but it wasn t until I started reading about it that I got more comfortable with it. To her surprise, her first night at UGM-TC put her completely at ease. I slept really well. I felt safe. After joining our Women s Program, Zoe discovered that she still loved to learn, especially about her faith. I ve always had a good connection with God, but my roommate and I do Bible study with each other every night. It feels good. Zoe also learned about the benefits of living in community. All these ladies have wonderful personalities, she tells us. Everybody has a story. Even though we come from all walks of life, all cultures, all backgrounds, we still have that commonality there and respect each other for that. With the help of her new friends at UGM-TC, Zoe began making plans for a new life, which will eventually lead her back to her family. Right now, I m looking for work, she says. I have a resume already. I just need help with the resources for finding the work that s out there. Thanks to you, Zoe will have all the support she needs now and through her first year on her new job. I did a lot of praying before I came to the Mission and this is where God led me, Zoe says. I thank you for caring and I appreciate it! HE HAS MADE EVERYTHING BEAUTIFUL IN ITS TIME. ALSO HE HAS PUT ETERNITY IN THEIR HEARTS, EXCEPT THAT NO ONE CAN FIND OUT THE WORK THAT GOD DOES FROM BEGINNING TO END. Ecclesiastes 3:11 n k j v
7 IN 2017, YOUR SUPPORT HELPED: Provide 18,499 sheltered nights to women residents. Secure housing and income for 60 Women and Family Program graduates.
8 FAMILY CENTER I can finally be happy. summer, I was in a really big depression, Bobbi recalls. Everything Last was just falling apart. Suddenly homeless, she wondered, What s the point in trying? But there was a point: her seven-year-old son. UGM-TC s Family Program gave Bobbi and her son the encouragement and resources they needed to start fresh. I ve got a much better perspective on life, she says. The Mission has changed who I am. Looking back on the death of her mother 11 years ago, Bobbi tells us, It completely pushed away the possibility that God was there. Then I came to the Mission and I went to the ALPHA course. The moment I got in there, it felt like home. I discovered that God is on my side. Now, every night before I go to sleep I say a prayer for me and my son. I m just so blessed. Your gifts also made a tremendous difference to Bobbi s son. He s made quite a few friends. He loves going to Good News Club, Bobbi tells us, referring to a children s Bible study led by community members who teach Bible stories and lessons, songs and Scripture memory. And he s doing great in school. The tutoring program has really helped him. Since he has been at UGM-TC, the second-grader has gone from a kindergarten reading level to a third grade level. He has stacks of books that he loves to read! she says proudly. Thanks to your prayers and support, Bobbi is excited about her future. I m about to start a program that will help me find an actual career, not just a job, Bobbi says. I can finally be happy, and it s all because of the Mission. To the folks who give to UGM-TC, no matter how small, no matter how big, you are touching somebody s life. FORGETTING THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE BEHIND AND REACHING FORWARD TO THOSE THINGS WHICH ARE AHEAD, I PRESS TOWARD THE GOAL FOR THE PRIZE OF THE UPWARD CALL OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS. Philippians 3:13 14 n k j v

10 VOLUNTEER PROFILE: JACK Jack s journey to Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County began on Christmas Day in 2013 when he was driving down East Lancaster and thought volunteering to help those experiencing homelessness would be a good fit. After some research, he decided to spend his time at UGM-TC because we provide those experiencing homelessness with more than just a meal or shelter, but a real chance to get the help and support they need to move on in their lives. Jack now serves lunch every Tuesday and has logged over 400 volunteer hours since January of 2014! Jack says, Words escape me to fully express the joy I feel volunteering at the Mission. I work with some of the finest, most loving and caring people I have ever been around! I am truly thankful. If you are willing to help change lives, we would love to have you as a volunteer too.
