PAUL S LUTHERAN CHURCH CONCORDIA, MO Opening Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 868 Awake, My Soul, and with the Sun Order of Service - Divine Service Setting Three - p. 184 Service of Preparation P In the name of the Father and of the ϯ Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P Our help is in the name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the ϯ Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

Introit Latin for entrance. It is usually a psalm that is spoken or sung responsively that begins the Service of the Word) P He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High C will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. P I will say to the LORD, My refuge and my fortress, C my God, in whom I trust. P Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place C the Most High, who is my refuge P no evil shall be allowed to befall you, C no plague come near your tent. P He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High C will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. Gloria Patri - p.186 (sung) (Gloria Patri is Latin for Glory to the Father. The Church has added this praise of the Trinity to Psalms and other liturgical items for centuries.) C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Bible Class Today - July 9 Adult Bible Study will meet in the elem school gym. Today s Scripture Readings This Bible study will examine the three Scripture readings in Today s worship. What is their connection to each other and the message for us today? Topic and discussion: "Hope and Solution for the Christian's Dilemma and Struggle." Class meets in the Conference Center. Walter Loeber will lead this class today. High School Youth will meet in the church office basement. Kyrie - p. 186 (sung) (Kyrie Eleison is Greek for Lord have mercy. We ask God to hear our prayers according to His mercy.) C Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Gloria in Excelsis p.187 (sung) (A hymn of praise based on the angels song in Luke 2) P Glory be to God on High, C and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee. we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory. O Lord God, heav'nly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord. Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day (Prayer that collects the theme of the day) P The Lord be with you. C And with thy spirit. (sung) P Let us pray. P Gracious God, our heavenly Father, Your mercy attends us all our days. Be our strength and support amid the wearisome changes of this world, and at life s end grant us Your promised rest and the full joys of Your salvation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. (sung) Old Testament Reading Zechariah 9:9 12 9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Second Reading Romans 7:14 25a 14 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15 I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21 So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. 10 3

Alleluia and Verse - p. 190 (sung) (A declaration of praise at the reading of the Gospel) C Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Gospel Reading Matthew 11:25 30 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eleventh chapter. C Glory be to Thee, O Lord. (sung) 25 At that time Jesus declared, I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise be to Thee, O Christ. (sung) Creed - (inside back cover of the hymnal) The Young Adult and Young at Hearts have all arrived safely back home after serving in Baton Rouge. Hymn - Lutheran Service Book # 699 I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say Sermon - Matthew 11:25-30 Offertory p. 192 (sung) (David s song of repentance in Psalm 51) C Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen. Immanuel; Higginsville Vacation Bible School The Reformation comes to life with the Reformation Walk where participants move through stations learning about the Reformation, receiving a sticker as they visit each location on their "map." At the Reformation Walk, participants ages 3-12 will travel to stations and learn about Luther's Ninety-Five Theses, create and learn about the meaning behind Luther's seal, play games, sing hymns of praise, and much more! We hope you can join us in celebrating the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation at our special VBS, The Reformation Walk, on Sunday, July 9, 2017! VBS will be held from 1pm-5pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Higginsville. Please register by June 26 th to receive a t-shirt. Registration forms are available on the table in the back of church or you can email the church atimmanuellutheran@ctcis.net. Saying Goodbye to Pastor & Lanett Jauss We say farewell to Pastor Jauss and Lanett as they prepare to move to New London, Missouri. His last Sunday to preach here will be on August 6 th. We hope you can join us for his final service and a potluck dinner in the Immanuel Lutheran School gym following worship to thank them for their time and service at Immanuel and to wish them God s blessings on their new chapter in life. Family Footnotes Several of my devotions this week have referenced the apostle Paul. Sometimes in my human reasoning I have to wonder why there were so many obstacles that Paul faced when he was doing work for God s kingdom. One might think that during his great missionary journeys to Rome, Paul would have been spared from the violent storms and the hands of his enemies. Not so. I do believe it is in the struggle that learning takes place. Self-confidence will never be enough when your world turns upside down. My devotion went on to say, The cost of our redemption was everything God had to give, and anything worth having is expensive. Difficult times and places are our schools of faith and character. If we are ever to rise above mere human strength, and experience the power of the life of Christ in our mortal bodies, it will be through the process of conflict We are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angles nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 8: 37, 38. Hold fast to these words of encouragement. (Quote taken from Streams in the Desert) The Lord s Prayer (8:00am) C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. (The 8:00am service will conclude with the Benediction and the closing hymn, Lutheran Service Book # 965 God Bless Our Native Land ) Service of the Sacrament (The 10:30 am service continues on p. 194 in Lutheran Service Book.) We believe that in the Lord s Supper our Lord gives to us His true body and blood with the bread and the wine for the forgiveness of our sins. We recognize the charge that St. Paul offers in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 that those who come to receive the Lord s Supper ought to examine themselves so that they do not eat and drink in an unworthy manner. Therefore, out of concern for those who have not been instructed in the faith or who hold to a different confession, we ask that only members of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations receive the Sacrament. If you would like to learn more about what our congregation teaches, to inquire about becoming a member or have questions about our practice, please speak to one of the pastors. For those who have problems consuming alcohol, you are invited to receive diluted wine from the purple glasses in the center of the tray of individual cups. For those who have dietary restrictions, gluten free wafers are available upon request.
