Welcome to Christ Lutheran Church If you are a visitor, please know of our delight in having you in our midst. Join with us in the praise of God and at the Lord s Table. We have a practice of open communion inviting all baptized Christians to share in Holy Communion. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If you are without a church home, please return and worship with us regularly. Children are always welcome in our worship. A quiet room is available at the back of the sanctuary if parents need a place to take their young children during the service. Please take a moment to complete your attendance slip, -- to be placed in the offering plate. Visitors, please provide your mailing address so we can acknowledge your presence. Members, please provide any updates or changes to your contact information. The Lord s Supper We believe that the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine in Holy Communion, and that through this gift we receive forgiveness of sin, life, and salvation. We invite you to come to the Lord s Table to receive this gift. Both wine (dark) and grape juice (light) are offered as well as gluten free wafers (please ask the Pastor for one at communion). Those unable to come forward should mention this to an usher so the pastor may serve you in your pew. Bring a Friend INVITE someone to worship with you. Being a disciple is important! Someone you know needs the Lord s power and a place to worship and serve. In your circle of influence, be an influence for Jesus Christ. Your invitation can change a life! JOIN US: Our CLC family of faith cordially invites to become a member (full, associate or seasonal). Become an integral part of our growing membership. Mark your attendance slip or call the office for more information. 843-785-5560. Prayer Requests Prayer request cards are located in the pew racks. You may include someone in today s prayers, by speaking the name as prompted during that portion of the service. You may also fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the offering plate for a name to be included in the prayer team s weekly prayers and/or the Sunday Bulletin -- Or email your request to our office at info@clchhi.com by Tuesday noon of that week. Groups of eight people (three couples and two singles) meet in each other s homes three times during the year. (The singles are not asked to host a dinner.) The group chooses a mutually agreeable time. The host couple prepares the entree and asks the others to bring side dishes and dessert. If one of the couples is not able to host a meal in their home, they can plan a Dutch-treat meal out. You will find a sign-up sheet in the narthex through January 13, 2019. Please remember to turn off your cell phones. THE CONGREGATION IS INVITED TO RESPOND WHERE PRINT IS IN BOLD AND MARKED WITH A C Epiphany means manifestation. On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi s adoration of the Christ child, Jesus baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the great epiphany of God s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the light that shines brightly in our midst. GATHERING SONGS Go Tell It On The Mountain Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born. When I was a seeker I sought both night and day, I asked the Lord to help me, And he showed me, he showed me the way. Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born. Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born. - 2 - He made me a watchman Upon that city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least, the least of all. Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and everywhere, Tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born. Go tell it on the mountain, yeah Over the hills and everywhere, Tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born. Ohhhhoooo Go tell it on the mountain, (x6) THE WELCOME CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS (please stand as you are able) P Let us stand together as we are able, confess our sins in the presence of God and one another, and hear God s promise of forgiveness. Silence for reflection and self-examination P Merciful and loving Lord, we come to you in sorrow for our sins. For turning away from you, and ignoring your will for our lives; Lord, forgive us: C Save us and help us. P For behaving just as we wish, without thinking of you; Lord forgive us: C Save us and help us. P For failing you by what we do, and think and say; Lord forgive us: C Save us and help us. P For letting ourselves be drawn away from you by temptations in the world about us; Lord forgive us: C Save us and help us. P For living as if we were ashamed to belong to your Son; Lord forgive us: C Save us and help us.

P May the God of love and power forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord. C AMEN. OPENING SONG All Hail King Jesus // Emmanuel / Medley THE GREETING P The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you. HYMN OF PRAISE Kyrie Eleison / Olsen - 3 -

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY (said in unison) O God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. AMEN. (please be seated) FIRST READING: Isaiah 60:1-6 Jerusalem is assured that nations will make a pilgrimage to her, because the light of God s presence is in her midst. The bountiful food of the sea and the profits of international trade will come streaming to Jerusalem and thereby declare God s praise. Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses arms. Then you shall see RESPONSIVE READING: Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 (read responsively) and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the king s son; that he may rule your people righteously and the poor with justice; that the mountains may bring prosperity to the people, and the hills, in righteousness. Let him defend the needy among the people, rescue the poor, and crush the oppressor. - 4 -

May he live as long as the sun and moon endure, from one generation to another. Let him come down like rain upon the mown field, like showers that water the earth. In his time may the righteous flourish; and let there be an abundance of peace till the moon shall be no more. May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles pay tribute, and the kings of Sheba and Seba offer gifts. May all kings bow down before him, and all the nations do him service. For the king delivers the poor who cry out in distress, the oppressed, and those who have no helper. He has compassion on the lowly and poor, and preserves the lives of the needy. From oppression and violence he redeems their lives, and precious is their blood in his sight. SECOND READING: Ephesians 3:1-12 What had been hidden from previous generations is now made known through the gospel ministry of Paul and others. In Christ both Jews and Gentiles participate in the richness of God s promised salvation. This is the reason that I, Paul, am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles for surely you have already heard of the commission of God s grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God s THE GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (please stand as you are able) grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. R The Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. - 5 -

* GOSPEL: Matthew 2:1-12 God s promise shines bright in the night as magi follow a star to honor a new king. Strangers from a faraway land, they welcome the long-awaited messiah of Israel. P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 2 nd chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road P The Gospel of the Lord C Praise to you, O Christ. THE NICENE CREED (said in unison) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,* who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. - 7 -

THE PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION P Drawn to the light of Christ, made bold in the waters of baptism, and filled with the Spirit, we lift up our prayers in confidence that God loves us and listens to us SUNG PRAYER RESPONSE After each portion of the prayers: P Lord, in your mercy, C hear our prayer. (REPEAT SUNG PRAYER RESPONSE BEFORE FINAL PRAYER) P Good and gracious God, we ask all these things and whatever else you see that we need with a sure and certain hope in your goodness and mercy, through Jesus Christ our Savior. C AMEN. THE PEACE (We may greet one another in the name of the Lord) P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C And also with you. THE RETURNING OF GIFTS (please be seated) THE RETURNING RESPONSE (please stand as you are able) - 8 -

THE RETURNING of GIFTS PRAYER (said in unison) God of abundance, we return to you from the gifts which you have first entrusted to us, and with them our very lives. Through these gifts, help us to bless the lives of others in the strength of your holy name. AMEN. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING P The Lord be with you. C and also with you. P Lift up your hearts C We lift them to you, Lord P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God C It is right to praise you, Lord. P As we come again to this table, we recall the story. It was a night of celebration and also betrayal, when Jesus took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and shared it with his disciples, saying, "When you eat this bread, and remember me, you become one in my body." In the same way, he took the cup after supper saying, "My very lifeblood will be poured out. But when you drink this cup, and remember me, I will be in you." C Come, Holy Spirit, Come. P Bless this bread and bless this fruit of the vine. Bless all of us in our eating and drinking, that our eyes might be opened, that we might recognize the risen Christ in our midst, indeed, in one another. C AMEN. THE LORD S PRAYER (said in unison) Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. AMEN. INVITATION TO COMMUNION P The gifts of God for the people of God. C AMEN (please be seated) THE DISTRIBUTION OF COMMUNION All baptized persons who believe in the real presence of Christ in our Sacrament for the forgiveness of sins are welcomed to commune. The elements will be received by Intinction. You will receive the Host from the Pastor; move to the chalice bearer to dip a portion of the Host in the wine. Grape juice is available as an alternative to the wine in the second chalice. Children not yet prepared to receive this sacrament are invited to come forward to receive a blessing. If you prefer to receive the bread from the Pastor, please move to that side of the aisle. If you choose, you may kneel at the rail for a moment of prayer and meditation after receiving the elements. - 9 -

How does technology cause us to care less? 1. We're more obsessed with OURSELVES. 2. Overwhelming exposure to suffering DESENSITIZES us. 3. Lack of PERSONAL interaction makes it easier not to care. Pastor Craig Groeschel is back with a new series called #struggles. He will teach us that true compassion demands ACTION. To say you care but not ACT is to not CARE at all. 1) Compassion INTERRUPTS. 2) Compassion COSTS. 3) Compassion changes LIVES. Come and dig deeper with us as we discover the influence of social media on our lives, as well as the lives of our kids and grandkids!
