St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, June 18, 2017 A WORD FROM THE DEACON... Happy Father s Day! Being a father has been a great blessing in my life. And a blessing, of course, is a sign of God s favor. Perhaps my greatest blessing as a father has been to participate in some way in the formation of my children as individuals in their own right: each as a unique expression of God s love, separate from me and gifted for the purpose of being an icon a sign (imperfect for sure) - of God s abiding love and concern for the world and for the whole created order. Our daughter gave me Tim Russert s book: Wisdom of Our Fathers, on Father s Day, 2007. I particularly like this small excerpt from a daughter reminiscing about her dad: When I was a little girl and my father put me to bed, it would always be cold in the room especially the sheets and he would wrap my feet in my baby blanket to keep them warm. Before he kissed me, I had a litany of things I went through every night: "Can I call you if I need anything? Can I call you if I get hot? Can I call you if I get cold? Can I call you if I get scared? Can I call you if I get hungry? He would listen and say yes after each one, and I would fall asleep, secure that I was completely loved and cared for. Let us pray today for the many fine men who have taken their place as fathers with open hearts, with willingness and joy. Let us pray for those who have been denied a chance to be fathers, and for those whose years of parenting have been cut short by the loss of a child. Let us pray, too, for single fathers and mothers who struggle to be both parents to their children to provide all the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs without the constant support of a spouse.... DEACON BOB COMMUNAL ANOINTING OF THE SICK June 24/25 As we know, our parish has a mission to share the love of Jesus Christ with all people, especially the most vulnerable. One of the best ways we do this is to bring the Anointing of the Sick to those who are seriously ill or frail. Parishioners may be anointed when hospitalized or in nursing facilities. Celebrating this Sacrament within our weekend Masses is a powerful way to reach out to those who are ill or homebound and to include them in our community prayer and worship. On SATURDAY, JUNE 24, and SUNDAY, JUNE 25, we will celebrate the Anointing of the Sick at all the Masses. There is often confusion about who may receive the Anointing. The following is taken from the Rite of Anointing of the Sick: Great care and concern should be taken to see that those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age receive this sacrament. The sacrament may be repeated if the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or if during the same illness the person s condition becomes more serious. A sick person may be anointed before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. Elderly people may be anointed if they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. In the past when this sacrament was called Extreme Unction (or Last Anointing ) it was only for those in proximate danger of death. Today it is to be ministered more readily but except for the elderly, it is ONLY for those who are SERIOUSLY ill; it is not for the entire congregation. In the case of the elderly, they may be anointed If they have become notably weakened even though no serious illness is present. Those who are advanced in years and who are still in good health probably should NOT present themselves for the Sacrament. If you need transportation, please call the rectory office (330-535-3135) no later than June 19.

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Five Sunday, June 18, 2017 FAMILY PERSPECTIVES Family meals are essential for the cohesion and growth of families. Nourishing food, conversation, laughter, disagreements, prayer and ritual all give life and promote growth. The Sunday Eucharist is the gathering meal for all parish families. Here we encounter community. We more fully become what we receive: The Body of Christ! The two most important family rituals are Sunday Eucharist and regular family meals. Be sure to honor fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and godfathers on this Father s Day at your family meal. FORBIDDEN FRUITS CREATE MANY JAMS. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION At the heart of today's solemnity is a Eucharistic procession, held in many parishes, that calls to mind the procession of Holy Thursday, yet has a purpose different from the somber adoration in the night watch. In the late Middle Ages, a procession through the city with the Blessed Sacrament was an occasion of heartfelt joy and great emotion. In a time when people seldom approached the altar to receive Holy Communion, the procession through the streets, past homes and workplaces, was a vibrant reminder that Christ was with them as a dear companion and guide. Every year on this day, a joyful procession winds through the streets of Rome from the Lateran cathedral. A few years ago, Pope John Paul II, deeply moved at the sight of the throng accompanying the sacred host, said that we ought to feel profoundly united with the faithful everywhere in the world at such a moment. "Before our mind's eye all the Churches of the world, from East to West, from North to South, are present." Originally this feast was on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday, but after the calendar reform of 1970, its title was expanded from "Corpus Christi" to "The Body and Blood of Christ" and in the United States it was moved to the Sunday after Trinity Sunday. Even though Easter season ended two weeks ago, this beautiful feast is aglow with Easter light. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. YOUTH, FAITH and VOCATIONAL DISCERNMENT The Catholic bishops of the world are planning to meet in October 2018 for the 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. The theme of this gathering is Youth, Faith and Vocational Discernment. In preparation for this major synod on youth, Pope Francis wants to gather input from the Catholic faithful. Consequently, the Diocese of Cleveland has made available a survey questionnaire to gather information on the current state of the young in our diocese that will be included as part of the presynod discernment document. The survey can be found on the diocesan website home page, www.dioceseofcleveland.org. All are invited and encouraged to participate by taking this short survey. The bishops of the United States pray that the results of this survey will help them more fully understand the experience of young people in our Church and in our country their hopes, dreams, fears, and struggles so that the synod may bear fruit in offering more insight and direction to our ministry with young people. A GREAT DAY WITH DAD The best gift you can give is your time. This Father s Day weekend, make sure to invite Dad (and the rest of your family) to spend time with you at The FEST on Sunday, August 6. The perfect family day, this year s FREE event is full of great music including for King & Country, Crowder, Matt Maher and Laura Story and a host of fun activities. Of course, the highlight of the whole day is our Outdoor Mass, beginning at 8:00 pm. You and Dad are not going to want to miss any of this, so make sure to head out to the Center for Pastoral Leadership in Wickliffe for a day full of faith, family, friends and fun. Questions? Check out www.thefest.us. MASS INTENTIONS Mass times are available through the remainder of 2017 to schedule a Mass for a loved one or for a special intention. Please call the rectory office at 330-535-3135. A $10 stipend offering is the usual donation for such a Mass.
