Page 3 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time - November 4, 2018 A Le er from Fr. James Dear Parishioners, I would like to thank those who helped with the planning of the parish and school events last weekend. My special thanks to the SJB team for the successful Harvest Fest on Saturday night. Special thanks, also, to the parish staff and volunteers who helped organize Trunk-or-Treat on Sunday night. Thank you, everyone, for your par cipa on and personal sacrifices. For me, that was one of the most beau ful and memorable weekends of the year! The next big event, our Parish Fall Fiesta FUNdraiser Dinner, is coming up Saturday, November 10. Don t miss out on the fun! Lots of food, fellowship, silent auc on items, entertainment and more. Consider invi ng your friends and neighbors to join you. Many thanks to the Fall Fiesta commi ee for all the planning and dedica on you have made to ensure that we have a successful celebra on. I look forward with excitement to another wonderful and memorable evening next Saturday. Proceeds from the event will be going towards the funding of our new church home. Prayer Requests from US Bishops We have a very special prayer request from Bishop Olmsted and Bishop Nevares, along with bishops all over U.S., asking us to join them with intensive prayer and fas ng for seven days, from Monday, November 5, through Sunday, November 11. The inten ons for prayer are for jus ce and healing for vic ms of Church sex abuse, accountability for the predators, and transparent leadership for Church leaders. These special seven days of prayer and sacrifice are in prepara on for the forthcoming General Assembly of the U.S. Catholic Bishops in Bal more from November 12-14. During the assembly, the bishops will discuss and vote on a series of concrete measures to respond to the abuse crisis, such as a third-party repor ng mechanisms, standards of conduct for bishops, and protocols for resigna on and removal of bishops involved in abuse, as well as some other key issues. Discussions and vo ng, as well as por ons of the day of spiritual discernment during the General Assembly, will be streamed live and available at: h p://www.usccb.org/live/ In the Gospel today, Jesus explains how to live the commandments in our daily lives by linking the love of God with the love of our neighbor. We no ce that of the Ten Commandments, the first three refer to our rela onship with God, while the remaining seven are about our rela onship with our neighbors. Love of God, and love of neighbor, are two sides of the same coin. This is a high standard and a challenge for everyone - yet that is what we are called to do: to measure our love of God by the way we love other human beings around us. As St. John says, Anyone who says, I love God, and hates his brother, is a liar, for how can one who does not love the brother that he can see, love God whom he has never seen? (1 Jn 4:20). Thank you and Remain Blessed. Fr. James

Page 4 stbenedict.org The Second Annual St. Benedict Trunk-or-Treat was another spook-tacular success! It was exciting to see so many from our parish family enjoying a festive evening together. He wrote much of the New Testament and was instrumental to the forma on of the early church. But what were some of the prac ces he wanted the new followers of Christ to focus on? Well, prayer for one. St. Paul was aware of the power of prayer and told the new Church to devote themselves to prayer (Col. 4:2) and to pray constantly (1 Thes. 5:17). St. Paul knew the power of prayer, but do we? All middle school students are invited to come to JAM on Tuesday, November 6, for a night discussing how prayer works and how it affects our lives and the lives of others. We will meet at St. John Bosco from 6 to 7:15 pm. Bring a friend and we ll see you there! No EPIC Session Next Week EPIC will not be mee ng on Sunday, November 11. Our next gathering will be on Sunday, November 18. Looking forward to seeing everyone again! Enjoy the night off, but be sure to spend some me in prayer. Suicide and Depression Presenta on The Parish of St. Benedict presents an evening on the topics of depression and suicide on Sunday, November 18 at 6:15 pm in the church. Teen Lifeline will offer separate adult and teen presenta ons, followed by a ques on & answer session, then refreshments a er the event.
