St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Third Sunday of Lent The other day the diocese published the early results on the parish responses to the annual BLA, Bishop s Lenten Appeal. The parish has done well, which in the first week, has reaching seventynine percent of our goal of $190,000. On a more sober note only twenty-four percent of the parishioners have offered anything to the BLA. In the eyes of the diocesan finance office great attention is given to the goal and percentage of the goal attained. In the eyes of the local pastor it is more than that. It is the number of parishioners who give to the goal. The BLA serves the needs of the many programs of the diocese, many of which touch this parish, but also serves as report card for where we are in our understanding the three facets of the of our Lenten experience. First, there is the call to enhance our devotional practices, rightly demonstrated in the many many people joining us at the daily visits to the church as well as attending daily Mass, and Stations of the Cross each Friday at 7:30. Second, there is a call to take seriously the business of Penance. This is most pronounced in Lent with the rise in the number of people stopping into the Box, if you know what I mean. Especially those who are the Big Fish, again, if you know what I mean. What constitutes a big fish? First, one who has been away a long time, over a year you might say, due to some rationale that eclipses the reality of sloth or procrastination sorry, I digress. Tempus Fugit, time flies and we don t even notice it. In the second case, there is the issue of intensity for those sins we have committed. For the big fish who come to the box let the sorrows and regrets of the past be eclipsed with a tremendous joy of the present and great hope for the future. Ah, let us never forget the joy that comes with penance, like a breath of fresh air. And third, the business of almsgiving. To give to the poor and needy. For instance, please know, all the money collected in the church poor boxes (located at the church entrances), every cent, is given to our St. Vincent depaul Society. The society helps provide food and financial assistance for water, heating, and electric bills to the needy in our community. But did you know, in addition to providing funds, the VDS members actually go to the homes of the people in need of assistance. It is a tough apostolate. If you feel up to the challenge and would like to join the society please contact Mr. Jim Gannon, director of this most important outreach to the poor and needy. You can reach him through the parish offices. And lastly, returning to the beginning of this letter, the Bishop s Lenten Appeal. Friends of mine from the business world readily quote to me that statistics demonstrate that we should only expect thirty percent of folks to give to any collection, including the Sunday collection. It is what it is. Well, please, that s not good enough for this world or the next. The Gospel most folks have at their funerals is: Matthew 25:31-46. Do you remember it? When I was hungry, thirsty, naked, ill, or in prison and you gave me to eat, drink, to be clothed, and visited me Sobering thought of inspiration from the One Who will one day judge all of us, not just thirty percent, but I digress again. Add a note if you want to. For example, "these priests need speech lessons." Or, "We like the dog but the big guy has got to go." You know, something simple but eloquent. In the BLA collection we need to have a much higher response rate than 24 percent. For those who use the envelope contained in this bulleting I don t really care if you give a dollar, or ten, or a hundred, or more. Let every man, woman and child of every age in this wonderful parish join together in responding to this collection. Again, please know we all have to give something as our response to the needy as it is wrapped in our Lenten experience. For the needy are rooted in Jesus Christ, our salvation experience. I beg all of you to join with me in giving to the Bishop s Lenten Appeal. All of us need to point in the same direction with this collection not for those we will meet in this world but more for those who will meet us in the next. Let us pray for one another. Collegiate Answer: Recently the Catholic exorcists in America have flashed a concern on the Wicca (Witchcraft) Covens of America who have organized monthly curses, dating on the 23 rd of each month, starting a Midnight in the Eastern Time zone, against president Donald Trump. http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/exorcists-warnagainst-wiccan-spell-to-bind-donald-trump-95286/ Collegiate Question: What is the origin of the phrase, Tempus Fugit? Good hunting. Fr. Gould 4

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 19 March 2017 Greetings, Thanks to all who attended the Spring Spectacular on March 4th. As I write this, I am confident that the PTO will put together another successful event to close out a successful year. I remain grateful to Mrs. Emond, Mrs. Faux, Mrs. Manchester-Spitz, Ms. Kruck, all volunteers, and parishioners who sacrifice for our students. Our school continues to make progress due to your generous support. Many thanks! We have already reached the halfway point of the third quarter. No snow certainly makes the school year move at a alarming rate. Lent has started and as a result, you will see our school community at Church for Stations of the Cross as well. Beginning Monday, March 6th, we will bring our student body to the parish at 2:15pm once a week (on alternating days) until Lent has finished. Please consider attending, all are welcome. It s the little things that mean a lot. Suggestions: staying with a spouse while the other spouse can rest, go shopping, the grocery, run errands, visit a friend, helping with small household chores, bringing or preparing a light meal, taking them on an outing, helping with shopping or picking up prescriptions, walk the dog, get the mail, as you get acquainted you will learn better of how you best can help. Maybe they like to read, bring a magazine or book. Do they play cards, chess, games? do they like music, sports, cooking, or gardening? Are they a veteran? Corporal Works of Mercy for Lent We will have a meeting March 30 at 7:PM in Mercy Hall Mary Guyant 540-347-5443 metterguy@gmail.com Please mark your calendars for Monday, March 20 th. On this day, when we celebrate the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, please stop by Chick Fil-A for breakfast, lunch, or dinner (or all three!) to support one of our parish families. Chris and Jane Jones, who have three wonderful boys with autism, are in great need of our prayers and financial assistance, in order to help with the boys medical expenses. Just mention the Jones family when you order your food and Chick Fil-A will donate a portion of the proceeds to them. May God bless you all four your prayers and support for this wonderful family! The Women of St. John would like to thank all who came to enjoy our Lenten Soup Supper and made it such a success. All of the donations we received will be donated to the Tracy Matthys Family. 6

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 19 March 2017 Every parishioner has 24/7 access to the best Catholic content on any device, including your computer, smart phone and tablet with internet access. With FORMED you'll find: video programs that explain the Catholic faith, explore the deepest meaning of marriage, receive Bible studies on a variety of topics, listen to CD s, watch movies and download books. These will entertain, engage, and inspire you with the beauty and wonder of your faith. Society of St. Vincent de Paul Teaching the Joy of Giving It is a sad statistic that indicates young people do not support charities with their time or their money. Clever marketing convinces children and young adults that new/bigger/better things are NEEDS and not WANTS. Income from a job or an allowance - is spent on acquiring possessions and supporting a trendy lifestyle. Little or no thought is given to putting some of themselves into service for another. Consider taking a little of your time to instruct the young people in your life of the benefits of giving to others. Remind them that God has blessed them with gifts and talents meant to be shared. Combat the sense of entitlement that is fostered by the materialistic messages that bombard them on all fronts by talking to them about the happiness that comes from giving to others. Help them set priorities and understand that they must be willing to let go of personal WANTS in order to provide someone else with a NEED. SVdP thanks Mr. Macdonald and the teachers at St. John School for allowing our members to visit classrooms and tell the students a little about our mission. Students were offered coin purses and encouraged to sacrifice a little each week to provide a Lenten gift for a neighbor in need. This is a small way to raise a child s awareness of God s call to Love thy Neighbor. Interested in learning more about who we are and what we do? Our next meeting will be held Sunday, March 19 at 9:00 AM in the K of C room, lower level of Mercy Hall. Thank you for your continued support! St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Knight s Roundtable - www.kofc5561.org Knights & their families are encouraged to say the following prayer throughout the year, continuing with an Orderwide novena MAR 12-20. God our Father, as St. Francis Xavier and countless of your missionaries traveled to the ends of the earth, impelled by the love of Jesus Christ, give me the grace to rely entirely on you, confident in the knowledge that you raise up the humble and the lowly. May I be united with your saints in offering you my humble tribute of thanksgiving and praise. I implore you to grant me, through your mercy, the blessing of living and dying in a state of grace. I also ask this same blessing for all those throughout the world who suffer persecution because of their faith in you. O God, you were pleased to gather to your Church the peoples of the world by the preaching and miracles of all your saints; mercifully grant that I may imitate their virtues and so bear witness to the Gospel of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 19 March 2017 Celebrating the 100 th Anniversary of the Blessed Virgin Mary s Appearances at Fatima. The visit to our Parish of the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue on March 22-23 is a timely reminder that this year is the 100 th anniversary of Our Lady s visits to the three children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Look for upcoming announcements by the Legion of Mary of various exciting events, including the showing of a movie about Fatima on May 12, Masses on May 14 featuring homilies about Fatima, special Holy Hours, and distribution of books, CDs and other materials about Fatima. What Our Lady taught the children in Fatima is just as important today as it was 100 years ago, perhaps even more so. Thus, this is a perfect time to begin, renew or refresh such inspiring devotions as First Saturday Mass and daily praying of the Rosary, which you will hear more about in the weeks and months to come. We are especially blessed by the opportunity to celebrate this singular anniversary of one of the great chapters in the history of our Catholic Faith. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. ROYSTON FUNERAL HOME INC. (540) 364-1731 Marshall,VA 20116 James P. Downey P.C.
