Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More November 6, 2016 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time The readings for the Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time present one of the foundational teachings of our Christian faith: the resurrection from the dead. But within Jewish history, before and during Jesus lifetime, resurrection from the dead was a relatively new and still debated area of Jewish theology. Today s Gospel reading presents an early encounter between Jesus and some Sadducees, Jewish religious leaders in Jerusalem intent on trapping Jesus in a public debate. Luke characterizes the Sadducees as those who deny that there is a resurrection. Their questioning of Jesus about Mosaic marriage laws and resurrection is clearly insincere, intending to embarrass Jesus and show the folly of the belief in the resurrection from the dead in front of the crowds. Jesus retort, combining his own prophetic insight and a text from Torah (Ex 2:23 3:15), defused the force of the Sadducees argument against resurrection. Jesus ended his response with the declaration that God is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive. The Sadducees were actually impressed with Jesus response, stating, Teacher, you have answered well (Lk 20:39, a final verse to this episode not included in today s reading). Preparing for Election Day Seeking guidance from our bishops regarding the elections on Tuesday? The USCCB has prepared a Prayer Before an Election, (link) and a teaching document, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship (link). These can be found on www.usccb.org. Farewell from Chris Candela STM Music Director From my very first weeks at St. Thomas More I was immediately overwhelmed by the gracious parish culture and the genuine kindness of the people of the parishioners. Nearly four and a half years later, that first impression has grown exponentially. Though the parish merger surprised us all, it is particularly revelatory to observe people offering their best when circumstances are at their worst. I wish to thank in a special way the parish staff, and in particular Fr. Madigan, for their constant support, good humor and grace. I wish also to thank our gifted Schola Cantorum for their unwavering commitment to excellence. For me personally, these years at St. Thomas More will remain in my memory as an unrepeatable joy - a true privilege. Thank you all - Oremus pro invicem! Christopher M. Candela The Parish Council will host a reception to express our gratitude and best wishes to Mr. Candela as he begins a new position in Omaha. SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 13 TH, AFTER THE 12PM MASS ALL PARISHIONERS ARE INVITED. Preparing for Baptism The first Tuesday of the month at 7:00PM in the OLGC Parish Hall. Baptisms take place on Sundays at 12:30PM (OLGC) and 1:00PM (STM). Please contact the Parish Office to register.

Letters will be mailed to you. The Semi- Annual Appeals enable us to meet extraordinary expenses. Thankfully, our one- hundred and plus- year- old buildings are in good repair. Our plans for an access walkway to the Church ran into some snags with the City. Finally we are shovel- ready and should begin construction soon weather permitting. The Collection also enables us to meet ordinary expenses which do continue at times when many parishioners are away. Listed below is a description of last year's Fall Semi- Annual Appeal. Once again, we humbly appeal to your love, concern and generosity to St. Thomas More Church and ask you to prayerfully consider your gift after reading my letter. Fr.
