Church of Our Lady of Good Counsel - St. Thomas More November 13, 2016 Thirty-Third day in Ordinary Time As we approach the end of the church year, the readings take on an end-time tone and focus. In today s reading, we hear Malachi differentiate between those who are proud and evildoers and those who fear the name of the Lord. He foresaw two contrasting futures for each in the end-time, when the day of the Lord comes. For the evildoer, it will be a time of total destruction, leaving them neither root nor branch. For the faithful, it will be a time when the healing rays of the sun of justice shall arise. The Gospel reading is Jesus eschatological (eschaton meaning end-time ) discourse with his disciples. Each of the synoptic Gospel writers places this discourse in the final week of Jesus life, just prior to the Passion narrative. In his discussion of events that will occur in anticipation of the end-time, Jesus identifies specific events: the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem; the appearance of false messiahs; war and insurrection; earthquakes and famines; a general persecution of believers; families torn apart because of the faith. Scholars commonly note that many of the events described by Jesus were realized in the Jewish-Roman war of AD 66 73. But clearly Jesus had a longer view in mind when he spoke to his followers about the eschaton. The discourse heard in today s Gospel reading is applicable to all times as we continue to await the return of Christ in his second coming. Each age faces it challenges, internally and externally, as it waits and wonders in prayer for the Parousia. Adapted from Liturgical Publications Inc, Connect! Uniting Word & World, Dr. Daniel J. Scholz Join the Parish Council at a reception to express our gratitude and best wishes to St. Thomas More s Music Director, Mr. Chris Candela, as he begins a new position in Omaha. Please contact Alex Miller at the parish office or via email at STMParishPrograms@gmail.com The Gospel predicts end times; our challenge though is to live faithfully now. St. Vincent often asked this simple question: What would Jesus Christ do, if he were in my place now? Ask yourself What would Jesus Christ do? and then put your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul envelope so that those who are suffering will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving.
