First Presbyterian Church August 26, 2018 10:00 a.m. + + + Embodying Christ s inclusive love through heart, mind, and service
FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) August 26, 2018 Twenty-first Sunday *Please stand, in body or in spirit. Text printed in bold italics to be read in unison. Prelude As the Deer/Fairest Lord Jesus arr. Hayes Chiming of the Hour Welcome Introit How beautiful the morning and the day; my heart abounds with music, my lips can only say: how beautiful the morning and the day. *Call to Worship (from Psalm 84) How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. Happy are those who live in your house, ever singing your praise! A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. We join together in your sanctuary to praise you, O God! A day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. Let us worship the Lord of hosts. *Hymn 625 O Lord My God *Invitation to Confession *Prayer of Confession (silent confession) God of redemption, we confess that we have not been your faithful servants. We have not served you with sincere hearts or trusted in your grace. We have armed ourselves against our neighbors, afraid of being seen as vulnerable and weak. We have acted out of guarded suspicion, rather than a welcoming spirit. Forgive us, O God. Empower us to tear down all that separates us from you, from others, and from ourselves, so that we might honor you with our lips and our lives; in Jesus name. Amen. *Assurance of Forgiveness 2
*The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another. *Sung Response Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love. The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. Time with the Children Mike Hilliard Children are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps. First Reading Psalm 84 Hopson Refrain How lovely, Lord, is your dwelling place; I long to be in your house. My heart and soul sing out for joy, sing out to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, the swallow build a nest. Yes, there at the altar they care for their young, O Lord, my King and my God. Refrain O Lord, I long to be in your house, if only for a day, For one day is better than a thousand elsewhere, O Lord, my King and my God. The Lord is a sun, the Lord is a shield, no need the Lord will withhold. O happy are they who trust in the Lord, whose trust is in God alone. Refrain Anthem Let the Praise Go Round Boyce/Hopson Hallelujah! Sing and rejoice! O praise the Lord! Let the sound go round, let our praise abound, sing we hallelujah! Rejoice and sing, Hallelujah! Second Reading Ephesians 6:10-20 3

And we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness in our community and in our world. Amen. Call to Prayer (hymn 288) Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. Welcome to First Presbyterian Church (FPC)! No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. We hope you feel the love that is present and our joy in having you with us. Please join us for refreshments in the fellowship hall following worship. Nursery care is available in the Education building. Ask any of the ushers to direct you, if needed. Hearing assistance units and large print bulletins are available from the ushers. Audio recordings of sermons and more information on FPC are at fpcor.org. Please call the church office (483-1318) for audio recordings of the entire service. WORSHIP NOTES Our final hymn today is #700, I'm Gonna Live So God Can Use Me. There are several versions of the text of this African American spiritual, with slight differences in language. In all versions, the phrase so God can use me remains firmly in place, a statement of intention on the part of the singer. The hope of being of use to God s purposes does not seek a personal reward or praise or credit. It is a selfless offering of oneself. We are using guitars, bass, and piano to create a bluesy style as we sing this wonderful spiritual! ECUMENICAL STOREHOUSE VOLUNTEERS FPC and Central Baptist Church will staff the Ecumenical Storehouse in September. Soles4Souls addresses the cycle of poverty in various communities around the world by creating jobs, and through the distribution of shoes and clothing. Do you have shoes that are still wearable but you no longer use? Have your children outgrown some of their shoes before wearing them out? If so, please bring them to the fellowship hall after worship on Sept. 30 and we will donate them to Soles4Souls. (For more information about the organization, visit soles4souls.org.) We will have Soul Food for lunch, too, so please stay after service for food, fellowship, and helping with a good cause.
