Blessing of the Home On Epiphany and in some places on New Year s Day, there is a custom of chalking the doorway above church doors and homes. It is an ancient custom that marks the household for Christ. Above the entryway in chalk (a reminder that we are made from dust), you may see an inscription: 20+C+M+B+18. The year, 2018, is placed at the beginning and the end of the marking. The + stands for the sign of the cross, and the initials CMB stand for Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, the names of the three magi. The letters also stand for the Latin phrase, Christus mansionem benedicat ( May Christ bless this house ).
