While reading sacred scripture, read the words with a love and sense of discovery until something seems to strike home. Sit with the passage as one would with a good friend- not just thinking or analyzing, but instead remaining in a quiet, listening spirit, so the word can nurture and challenge you. Call to Prayer Let us take a moment in the midst of all our activity to prepare ourselves for prayer. Excerpts from SNOW FALLING ON SNOW Copyright 2001 by Robert J. Wicks Used with permission of Paulist Press www.paulistpress.com The Word of God Choose one of next Sunday s readings. One person reads the scripture aloud as others are attentive to a word, phrase, or theme that is meaningful to them. Allow for a minute of silent reflection. Have another person read the same scripture a second time. Faith Sharing Begin with an open ended question such as What strikes you from this reading? and/or you can use the Reflection Question found on our website or bulletin. Allow time for reflection & sharing. Closing Prayer At the end of the faith sharing, invite participants to pray aloud for any particular petitions or praises they may have. Feel free to close with: The Lord s Prayer or Spontaneous prayers or a faith-based song. Reflection Question for Next Sunday, June 6, 2010 Pay attention to the details of today s Gospel it s more than just the overwhelming generosity of Jesus response to a hungry crowd. On their own, the disciples could not possibly have fed all those people, much less have leftovers. Still, Jesus tells them to feed them. Jesus performs this gracious miracle of hospitality with and through those whom he has called. The Eucharist can never be my communion; rather it is a gift we are given to share. We are sent to go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Dear Parishioners: This weekend we celebrate, with the rest of our nation, Memorial Day a federal holiday that commemorates the courageous U.S. men and women who gave their lives in the military service. In years past this holiday was known as Decoration Day since it reflected the custom of placing flowers and other decorations on the graves of those who had fallen. For Roman Catholics it is an opportunity to pray in a special way for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation their very lives. We should never forget to pray in thanksgiving for these dedicated and patriotic individuals whose bravery has enabled us to live in freedom. Let s make Memorial Day more than just the beginning of the summer vacation season let it truly be a day to pause and gratefully remember in prayer those who died for our freedom. May God reward them for their bravery. May they and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in God s peace. Amen. Msgr. Luca THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Good, better, best; May you never rest; Until your good is better, and your better best! -- Anonymous GOOD DEEDS OF THE CHILDREN: Jillian cleaned the playroom; Becca dried off the dogs after they went swimming in the pond; Tori helped at Brownie camp; Jack set the table; Samantha cleaned her room, vacuumed the stairs, and cleaned the dining room cabinet; Mandi helped her sister with her jobs; Glenn helped bring the school food donations to poor seniors; Tara donated food at school for poor seniors. With everyone working together, the time commitment is usually about 1-1/2 to 2 hours per assignment. Liturgical Linens: Includes washing and ironing the small linens used in Masses. Certain guidelines must be followed and instructions will be provided. Rotations are about six times per year. Altar Server Robes: Each person launders a few robes (wash & wear) about four times per year. If your child is an Altar Server, this is an ideal way to support him or her and the parish. FAMILY ICE CREAM SOCIAL Families of the Parish are invited to the Knights of Columbus Ice Cream Social on Tuesday evening, June 15, from 6:30 to 8 PM at the Franciscan Friary (12290 Folly Quarter Rd). CDA WEEKEND RETREAT: The Catholic Daughters have scheduled their third Annual Retreat for the weekend of June 11-13 th. This year it will be held at the Priestfield Retreat Center. Our spiritual leader for the weekend will be Father Kazimierz Chwalek, from the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, the national Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, MA. Please call Harriett Teixeira at 301-924-2649 for more information and to make reservations. The CDA Court St. Louis would like to thank all of the ladies, and a few men, who participated in our 4th Annual Vera Bradley Charity Bingo on May 21st. Our students have had a week jam-packed with celebrations and fun activities and everyone is looking forward to a long Memorial Day weekend before our end-of-year celebrations. Congratulations to our littlest angels our Pre-K students, who had their field day and participated in our Laps for Learning fun run this week. They celebrated their accomplishments with a year-end celebration and are all set to move on to Kindergarten after a long summer of playing, of course! On the other end of our student spectrum our 8 th graders have completed their final exams this week and are excited to spend the next week celebrating with their friends at King s Dominion and at their traditional 8 th grade luncheon. We will celebrate their achievements with an awards assembly and Graduation on June 5 th. Many of our students have been with us for 9 years and we will find it difficult to say goodbye. We cannot express how blessed we feel to have been a part of their lives and we wish them the very vest in their future endeavors. We know they will make us proud! This week we had our annual Field Day and Laps for Learning Fun Run, organized and run by our able team of volunteers and leaders, Mrs. Mary Jane Tomasic (our PE teacher) and Mrs. Lynne Layug (parent volunteer extraordinaire!) Our Fun Run raises money for the school through pledges, and our students run laps around the campus in a spirited competition! Thank you Miss Mary Jane and Mrs. Layug for all of your time and talent we so appreciate your efforts and enthusiasm for one of the FUNNEST days of the year!

We re busy planning for next year and look forward to being together again and sharing new & exciting moments with you until then, we hope to see you at VBS! YOUTH MINISTRY I went to a memorial service recently for the father of a friend of mine. We can learn so much about life from someone s death, and John Cahoon was a person who embraced life. His daughter, Joanne, and other kids continue his legacy. Live for today, dream for tomorrow, learn from yesterday. In his wallet, John kept a scrap of paper with the above quote in his handwriting. Maybe this sums up a message for all of those going through transitions right now, whether they be from spring to summer or from high school to college or from middle school to high school. John s personality and his wisdom speaks to all of us about what is important and, knowing John s family, WHO is important. I pray that each of you grow in knowledge and wisdom and grace with Jesus as your guide and friend. I LL BE PRAYING FOR YOU. SECOND/SPECIAL COLLECTIONS June 5/6 Catholic Communication Campaign June 26/27 Building Fund STEWARDSHIP MESSAGE Today s psalm reminds us that we have been crowned with glory and honor and given rule over the works of God s hands. But we must be good stewards, for the Lord will surely hold us accountable for the use of those gifts! PLANNED GIVING As parishioners of Saint Louis Church, old or new, we are all beneficiaries of more than 150 years of service and parishioner generosity. A planned gift to Saint Louis Church, will sustain this good work for generations to come. For more information on making a planned gift to Saint Louis Church, contact Mary Helfrich, Parish Development Director at 410-531-6040 or MHelfrich@stlouisparish.org. RESPECT LIFE: WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE PRAYING AT THE HILLCRST ABORTION CLINIC IN CATONSVILLE IF I COME ON SATURDAY, JUNE 5? Our ministry is a ministry of prayer. We do not pray at the entrance, we pray on the opposite side of the building on Rt. 40. From the Rt. 40 side you won t encounter women going into the clinic as the clinic is located on the 6 th floor of a 7 story office building 30 feet from the sidewalk. We do not speak to anyone entering the building. Sidewalk counseling is done at the entrance to the clinic by trained people. Prayer is usually private and silent. You may choose to hold a sign, walk along the sidewalk or kneel while praying. You won t be harassed. This is safe, nonconfrontational, peaceful prayer. You won t see graphic photos. People and families of all ages are welcome. We pray the first Saturday of each month between 9 11 am. Join us for ten, twenty or thirty minutes of prayer! For information call Grace Kissane at 410-730-0201. NEEDED: T-SHIRTS FOR KIDS: Howard County Hospital is requesting donations of plain white T-Shirts for children who are discharged from the Emergency Room with ruined shirts. Must be new, in sizes from XS (2-4) to XL (18-20). This is a nice way to lessen the trauma for a child who is having a really bad day. A donation box will be in the Narthex the weekend of June 5 and 6th. Thank you. For more information, please call Georgia Morris 301-498-2318. Preserving our Treasured Legacy Campaign: Please consider making a sacrificial pledge to this campaign that will enable us to bring down the mortgage of our new Church and Pastoral Center. 1. If you gave to the Heritage of Hope Campaign, which ended in 2001, consider making a pledge to the Legacy Campaign. Or 2. If you are nearing the end of your payment to the Legacy Campaign, consider extended your pledge for another year or two. Or 3. If you are new to the parish or were unable to make a pledge in the past, consider doing your part now by making a pledge now.
