July 24, 2016 Our Worship of God 9:15 am Now with God s help, I shall become myself. -Soren Kierkegaard Welcome and Announcements Invitation to Pass the Peace of Christ Call to Worship (responsive) In times of weakness and hour of need, yours is the strength by which we carry on, the shoulder we rest our head upon. When our load is heavy and too much to bear, yours are the arms stretched out to help us the grace that we depend on. In times of weakness and hour of need, your voice is heard, Come find rest.

This is grace divine, the path we tread to wholeness of body and spirit, the path that leads to you, and for which we offer our offering of praise. Opening Our Hearts Through Song Song of Admission Hearing God s Word 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 Brother by NEEDTOBREATHE Same Power by Jeremy Camp Sean Douglas It is necessary to boast; nothing is to be gained by it, but I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities for the sake of Christ; for whenever I am weak, then I am strong.

The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Meditation Dropping the Mask read by Debbie Jacobs Song of Conviction Song of Truth Lord, I Need You by Matt Maher Mended by Matthew West Offertory Prayer Offertory Exhale by Plumb Message Becoming my True Self Carol McEntyre Prayer and Meditation (responsive) Too often, we charge through life confused by our own picture of self. There is a part of us that we love and want to share with others, and another part that we dislike and try to hide from others. We may want to change but even the idea of change is difficult. We continually wrestle with the thought of doing things differently. In this moment of silent reflection, please meditate on this quote from Parker Palmer: Afraid that our inner light will be extinguished or our inner darkness exposed, we hide our true identities from each other. In the process, we become separated from our own souls. We end up living divided lives, so far removed from the truth we hold within that we cannot know the integrity that comes from being what you are.

Teach us by your Spirit to let go of our need for perfection and admiration. Help us to let go of our self-righteousness and false notions of power. Silently reflect by repeating the following phrase from 2 Corinthians: My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Give us strength and courage to be who we really are. Encourage us and even push us To let go of false selves so we can fully embrace you, Holy God. We pray these things in the name of Christ Jesus. Amen. Announcements Do you Desire More of God? Maybe you long for a more intimate prayer life or a deeper insight from God s word but you just don t know how to get there. Spiritual Practices like reading Scripture, journaling, prayer walking, solitude and keeping the Sabbath are hotspots of the Spirt the places where we can regularly meet Jesus. A spiritual practice isn t magic, but it does put you in partnership with the Holy Spirit and creates the space for you to hear from God. Carrying out these practices overtime is what leads to the transformation that we long for the transformation that only Christ can bring in our lives. This fall, Pastor Carol is going to lead two Covenant Groups a Thursday afternoon group and a Thursday evening group that will focus on creating the space in our lives to hear from Christ through the spiritual practices. Each group will meet just once a month to allow time to try out the practices. They will be capped to 10 participants each to allow for intimate community. It is also important that participants really commit to attending the meetings and making time for the practices between meetings. The cost for the group materials is $20 per person. If you are interested in signing up or want to know more email Pastor Carol at mcentyre@fbc-columbia.org or call the church office at 442-1149. Join Us for Some Fun in the Sun! It will be held on Tuesday, August 9, from 6-7:30 pm. A rain date is set for August 10. We will be working on flower beds, raking and spreading mulch, trimming trees, and weeding.
