Classic Grace Communion BAPTISM OF OUR LORD SUNDAY Thank you for honoring God with your presence this morning. Please be sure to complete a registration card and then place it in the offering plate mid-way in the service. Visitors: We are especially delighted that you are here today and we hope that your worship with us will be a blessing to you. A Note about Communion: We believe that in Holy Communion when we receive the bread and wine we actually receive the Lord s Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and strength to serve God. If you are a baptized and repentant Christian who desires to commune with us, we believe that by communing you are publicly declaring you share in our understanding of Holy Communion. In addition you are expressing your oneness in faith with us in Close Communion at Emmanuel as part of The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Only those who have been instructed in Holy Communion should commune. If you have any questions, speak with the pastor or a lay minister. An usher will gladly direct you. If you desire to commune regularly with the congregation please make an appointment with one of the Pastors. PRELUDE March Of The Magi Priscilla Acuff, Organist By F. HYMN OF INVOCATION See This Wonder In The Making (LSB # 593 vs. 4) EXHORTATION LSB 213 Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father, beseeching Him in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the Name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. CONFESSION OF SINS LSB 213 O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. ABSOLUTION LSB 213 Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Father in heaven, at the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River You proclaimed Him Your beloved Son and anointed Him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized in His name faithful in their calling as Your children and inheritors with Him of everlasting life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Please be seated. OLD TESTAMENT Genesis 1:1-5 NIV In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Romans 6:1-11 NIV What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Mark 1:4-11 NIV The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the first chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. And so John came, baptizing in the desert region and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. As Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise.
It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. Grant us Your Spirit, gracious Father, that we may give heed to the testament of Your Son in true faith and, above all, firmly take to heart the words with which Christ gives to us His body and blood for our forgiveness. By Your grace, lead us to remember and give thanks for the boundless love which He manifested to us when, by pouring out His precious blood, He saved us from Your righteous wrath and from sin, death, and hell. Grant that we may receive the bread and wine, that is, His body and blood, as a gift, guarantee, and pledge of His salvation. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. LORD S PRAYER (Sung) (From Hymns For The Family Of God # 440) Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father, Which art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts As we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil, For Thine is the Kingdom And the Power and the Glory, Forever. Amen. 1935 by G. Schirmer, Inc. Arr. 1976 by G. Schirmer, Inc. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD LSB 162 Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.
