Maple Hill Mennonite Cemetery, Wadsworth, OH Benjamin Gable died on Aug 9, 1895 and was buried in Maple Hill Mennonite Cemetery, near Wadsworth, Ohio. Cemetery records list his birth place as Lancaster County, PA and his age at death as 88 years, 9 months and 14 days which makes his birth date about October 26, 1806. Benjamin s death certificate lists his birthplace as Lancaster, PA, lists his age as 88 years and does not give a birth date. It lists his last known residence as Guilford Township, Medina County, OH. Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster, PA was unable to find birth records for Benjamin. Maple Hill Cemetery Gable Family Graves 1 Also in the cemetery records is that Benjamin had an unmarried sister named Polly (some other sources call her Mary), who died on Oct. 2, 1874 at age 77 which places her birth date circa 1797. 1 Coolman, Ford and Kreider, Rachel "The Mennonite Cemeteries of Medina County". 1971. 2

Benjamin Gable and Anna Koppes were married on May 29, 1838 in Medina County, Ohio and had six children: Eliza, Jacob, John, Henry, Samuel and David. This same information about their children can also be found in the Koppes book. Anna was the mother of all of Benjamin s children. Benjamin Gable / Anna Koppes Marriage Record After Anna died, Benjamin married Margaret Overholt Nash (1811-1891) (daughter of Abraham Overholt (1784-1859) and Hannah Shutt (1792-1873) on Feb 10, 1867. Margaret was previously married to Henry Wismer Nash (1783-1861). Henry Nash was the father of all of Margaret s children. Benjamin Gable Property History 1838 John Gable and his wife Elizabeth sold the same land to Benjamin and Henry Gable (separate parcels). Both of these deeds were signed by Johann Gabel. This is also the source of John s wife name because she is named in the text as his wife. Benjamin and Henry each paid John Gable $300 exactly equaling the original price paid in 1831. No mention of a relationship between John, Benjamin and Henry in these documents. 1840 Census shows John Gable, Benjamin and Henry Gable listed in consecutive lines in Milton Township. 1850, 1860 Census shows Benjamin and Anna Gable living in New Pittsburgh, Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio. Henry Gable is still living in Milton Township in 1850. By 1860 Henry Gable has also moved to New Pittsburgh. 1850 Census 3

1860 Census April 17, 1866 Deed - Benjamin Gable of Wayne County, OH bought the farm near River Styx, in Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio from David and Magdelena Kreider of Medina County, Ohio for $10,900. This includes the adjoining land in Wadsworth Township. The southwest corner of this property adjoined the property of Jacob Coppes (probably Anna Koppes Gable s brother). 1870, 1880 Census show Benjamin and Margaret Gable living in Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio. By 1870 Henry Gable has bought land in Wadsworth Township, Medina County, Ohio which is just across the township line near Benjamin Gable s property and is also listed there in 1880. (Pennsylvania) 1870 Census 1880 Census June 4, 1886 Benjamin and Margaret Gable of Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio sold the same farm to Benjamin s son John Gable (living in the same place) for $10,840. It indicates that the portion of the property adjoining the former Koppes farm is now owned by Joseph Beck. 1895 Benjamin dies. 4

About the Koppes Family Anna Koppes was the daughter of Jacob Koppes (1775-1848) and Barbara Rieser (-1822) according to the Koppes book 2. The earliest history of our family that carries with it anything like defmiteness is an account of the removal of a grandfather Koppes, whose Christian name I am unable to find, from Carolina to Northampton County, Pennsylvania. There he married the widow of one Michael Kulp. She had had several children by her first marriage, one of whom, Barbary, married Jacob Geisinger, removed with him to Michigan, where they reared a large family: after her husband's death she returned to Ohio and lived to be one hundred years old. Her granddaughter it was married Abram R. Koppes in the year So we see the Koppes- Kulp-Geisinger alliances are not altogether recent affairs, but are -on the other hand-as old as our knowledge of the family. This Koppes-Kulp marriage in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, about the year 1770, resulted in a family of at least five children: 2 Jacob Koppes, born June 16, 1775. 2 Nancy Koppes. 2 Catherine Koppes. 2 Elizabeth Koppes. 2 Samuel Koppes, b, May 9, 1786. Jacob Koppes and his brother Samuel removed from Pennsylvania to Ohio in the early years of 1800. They came with families by the slow and tedious means of travel of those pioneer days, heavy lumbering wagons through woodland trail, or more often through trackless forest. Jacob took up his abode upon what was afterward known as the Joseph Beck farm, situated in the rich River Styx valley in Guilford Township, Medina County, 0., and Samuel made his first Ohio home on what was afterward known as the William Miller farm, located only about a mile from the Beck farm, and in the same township. The part of this farm where the buildings stood remained in the Koppes family for many years. This farm now belongs to the family of the late Noah N. Yoder, who bought it of the John O. Koppes estate about thirty years ago. Now we shall trace the lineage of the above named families in order, or as nearly so as we can, giving little more than the mere line of descent, though we should enjoy, and could, with profit, fill a large volume with an account of various members who have filled important places in their time and generation. Jacob Koppes (2) had two wives. To the first, Barbara Rieser, he was married Nov. 27, 1798. She died Sept. 9, 1822, The second was Anna Swartz, whom he married Nov. 9, 1823. Jacob Koppes died Jan. 12, 1848, and his widow, Anna, died Oct. 9, 1864, aged 73 years, 7 months and 20 days. The family of Jacob Koppes and first wife consisted of the following children : 3 Mary Koppes (Berkey), b. Jan. 18, 1800; 3 David Koppes, b. Jan. 22, 1802. 3 Abram R. Koppes, b. Jan. 18, 1804; d. John Gable Family Letter Collection John Gable (Benjamin Gable s son) and Sarah Campbell kept a collection of Gable family letters which were passed down to John's descendant George Gable. This letters written between Gable family members near River Styx in Guilford Township, Medina County, Ohio and Mountville and Millersville, PA. The letters were written between 1860 and 1895 between various descendants of Benjamin, Henry and Jacob Gable. Catherine and her husband weren t mentioned in the letters. The letters discuss various trips and visits back and forth between Ohio and Pennsylvania. They also discuss Uncle Henry and Aunt Poll. Here are some of the family members that participated in the letter writing campaign: 1) Jacob Gable s Descendants: Barbara Klugh Musser Shindle (Jacob s granddaughter, my mother s grandmother) Michael G. Shindle (Barbara s husband) Mary Catherine Klugh Musser (a daughter of William Gable and Catherine Klugh) 2) Polly Gable (Benjamin s sister) mentioned only 3) Benjamin Gable s Descendants: John Gable (Benjamin s son) David Gable (John s brother, my dad s grandfather) Elizabeth Gable (John s sister) Sarah Campbell Gable (John s wife) Mary Gable (John s daughter) 4) Henry Gable s Descendants (Benjamin s brother): Elizabeth Gable Shaum (Henry s daughter) Joseph Shaum (Elizabeth s husband) My mother wasn t able to determine what the common ancestor of Jacob Gable in Pennsylvania and Benjamin/Polly/Henry Gable in Ohio was and had very minimal information about Henry Gable s branch of the family. 14

In the chart below yellow is for Benjamin Gable's descendants, pink for Polly Gable, blue for Henry Gable and Green for Jacob Gable. The numbers are the letter numbers. 15

About The Rickert Family 26

The Rickert family 4 is of German origin, and the descendants of the progenitor in America have lived here through five generations. Daniel Rickert, the first of the name born in America, opened his eyes to the light of day on the old home farm in Hilltown township, which has since been in possession of his descendants. He always car- ried on agricultural pursuits and to that occupation reared his sons. He married Barbara Rosenberger, and they became the parents of six children : Henry, John, Abraham, Catharine, Magdaline and Isaac. Isaac Rickert, whose birth occurred at the ancestral home in Hilltown township, likewise devoted his attention to the tilling of the soil throughout his business career. He married Catharine Ruth, a daughter of Henry Ruth, who was likewise a native son of Hilltown township. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Rickert were the parents of nine children, namely : David, who married Livy Funk; Abraham, who married Mary Ann Fretz, a daughter of Abram Fretz ; Daniel, who married Lucy Hunter; Annie, the wife of Enos Loux ; Isaac, who was a Mennonite preacher and married Salome Gross ; Henry R. ; Barbara, the wife of Aaron Moyer; and two children who died in infancy. After the death of Isaac Rickert, the father of these children, the mother married Abraham Rickert, a brother of her first husband, and they had two chil- dren : Catharine, who became the wife of William Moyer ; and Maggie, who was the second wife of William Moyer. December 15, 1900 Herald of Truth, Vol. XXXVII, No. 24, page 381, 382 RICHERT. - At River Styx, Ohio, on November 22, 1900, Abraham Richert. He was born in Bucks Co., Pa., June 22, 1823, married Mary Ann Fretz, September 19, 1847, and moved to Medina Co., Ohio in 1849. He leaves a wife, nine out of ten children, eighteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral and burial at the Lower Mennonite church of which he was long a member. Services by Isaac Good and Jacob Newcomer. HERALD OF TRUTH, Vol. XLI, No. 17, April 21, 1904 - pp 135,136 RICKERT.-Mary Ann Fretz was born in Bucks Co., Pa., March 26, 1928; died April 1, 1904; aged 76 Y., 6 D. She was married Sept. 19, 1847, to Abraham Rickert, whom she survived nearly three and one-half years. She was the mother of five sons and five daughters; all but one son are living. Two years after their marriage they emigrated to near River Styx, Medina Co., Ohio, where they resided until the time of their deaths. On Easter day the relatives and friends assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to our dear mother and friend. The funeral sermon was preached by Bish. Isaac Good from Psa. 35:13,14, assisted by Pre. E. Coppes.
