S a c r e d H e a r t A c a d e m y A Ministry of the Holy Name of Jesus Parish ACADEMICALLY ENRICHING PASSIONATELY CATHOLIC Parent Weekly Note January 26, 2017 Letter from the Principal CATHOLIC SCHOOLS COMMUNITIES OF FAITH, KNOWLEDGE AND SERVICE D ear Parents and Friends, Beginning Sunday, January 29 th, Sacred Heart Academy joins over 7,000 Catholic schools across the country to celebrate 2017 National Catholic Schools Week with the theme: Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service. Throughout this week, we will honor those who help us be Strong Catholic Christians, Effective Life-long Learners, Self-Disciplined Individuals and Compassionate Caretakers of Creation. Please join us as we CELEBRATE OUR FAITH at the 10:00 a.m. Sunday Mass on January 29 th, at the Olive site. Students should wear their liturgy uniform to this Mass that kicks off a week of celebrating our faith, community, gifts and talents, vocations, students and families! Science fair projects will be on display for viewing after the Mass and donuts will be served. Invite a friend to the Open House that follows the Mass. On Monday, we will honor community leaders, City Council, and First Responders during our morning assembly. The Redlands Daily Facts will join us as we pay tribute to these fine men and women. We welcome all parents to this special assembly. A detailed schedule of events for the rest of the week is posted on the school website. Come celebrate with us! God Bless you, DO JUSTICE LOVE KINDNESS WALK HUMBLY Micah 6:8 Angela Williams Principal

Faith Reflection: Mercy Love in Action Blessed are those who renounce their own comfort in order to help others, is the fifth modern beatitude that Pope Francis offered us back in November. With all the rains these past weeks there are many in our community who are uncomfortable and seek a warm, dry place at the local cold weather shelter. Here they find caring folks who have renounced their own comfort to help man the shelter on the nights it is open (our parish volunteers Friday night through Saturday morning). There are also many school families who have reached out to help those in need and have contributed socks and other items that are given to the folks when they arrive at the shelter. I brought several bags of socks our school had collected on Monday night and those who had come that evening were most glad to receive clean, dry socks. That is one example of what Pope Francis meant when he presented this modern beatitude. Our 7 th grader gives us some other ways to renounce our comfort and help others. If you are interested in other ways to help, our DDF video we saw this past weekend highlighted some of the other ministries we have at our parish. Please see the back of the parish bulletin or call the parish office for more information about the cold weather shelter and these ministries. How to Evangelize Mercy by Eric We can evangelize mercy by showing love to the poor. For example my Boy Scout troop, Troop 11, does an annual food drive for homeless shelters. Doing this I show mercy to those who need it through food and help. Jesus said, When I was hungry, you fed me, so we must do so with others. Also when you see a homeless person on the street you could give them your leftovers from dinner. If you know someone who was in a disaster you can let them stay at your place until they can go back home. Our 5 th graders were in charge of Mass today where we celebrated the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, that intense encounter with Jesus that turned Paul s life upside down. As part of their preparation for today they took a closer look at Saul who became Paul, and the culmination of all their study was made into individual videos. Miss Klorer chose six of the videos for me to post under Jesus, Go! I also tweeted Alex M. s video hers was picked because she additionally made props for her video, giving it added flavor. They are all worth looking at and are between a minute and two minutes in duration. Jesus, Go! is found under Spiritual Life on the school s main web page. Don t want to go too far on a rainy night? Why not take in a movie? Come by the parish hall this Thursday night, January 26, from 7-9 p.m. and watch The Light Between Oceans, the Cinema for the Soul offering for this month. May you have a blessed New Year. Thank you. Mrs. Alhadef

Sacred Heart Redlands is being recognized for the emphasis we place on differentiated instruction, and meeting the needs of each individual child, through the implementation of blended learning strategies and Leap Program! Be proud of your school!! Lunch Program News Motto: No Child Goes go hungry As of today, a new lunch process will become effective. If your student requires an Emergency Lunch (EL), please let the homeroom teacher or aide know first thing in the morning. Please do NOT call or text the lunch lady anymore, the office will do so. If you have not advised the school, you will receive a call asking if a EL is required. Remember it is YOUR responsibility as a parent to inform us if a hot lunch is needed or you will be dropping off a lunch. Flyers/Handouts sent out in Yellow Envelopes: SCRIP Progress Reports Magic Show Flyer/Order Form

Announcements Reminder for those who drop off their children in morning car-line, if there are not cars in front of you please pull all the way forward to the 1st grade room before letting your children out - even if your child is in Kindergarten or Jr. High. Vehicles get backed out into the street very quickly, blocking traffic. Pulling forward as far as possible and having children exit the vehicle quickly lets more cars get off the street allowing street traffic to flow smoothly. Thank you for your cooperation. Tube Socks Drive Sacred Heart Academy joins the Holy Name of Jesus parish in supporting the Redlands Cold Weather Shelter. We are continuing to partner with our parish to collect thick, men s tube socks for the Cold Weather Center. Donations may be brought to the school office. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!!
