S The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 10 June 2018 Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York From the Pastor... It is said a picture is worth 1,000 words. So today s Bulletin contains a few pictures of St. Luke s Carnival 2018. Hopefully for those who attended they bring back pleasant memories of 4 great days of fun, good food and friendship. The Carnival provided 4 days of celebration bringing together so many parishioners, neighbors and friends from near and beyond. Even the weather cooperated this year giving us 3 and 1/2 days of good weather. What a gift! This year also saw a real family atmosphere. So many young families with their children enjoyed themselves throughout the Carnival. It was such a gift to see children and parents enjoying being together - dancing, going on rides, eating, laughing, smiling and creating such wonderful memories of their time at St. Luke s carnival. This year saw a new layout for the entire Carnival which provided more open space and a sense of Community. And of course, the table and chair in front of the stage offered a place to stop and rest while eating and meeting and spending time with others. And finally, let me not forget to mention the financial assistance the Carnival offers the Parish. The money raised will go to cover operating expenses for the parish and school. So let me end by offering a sincere thank you to all who visited the Carnival, you made it a success! A special thank you to all who worked so hard both in preparing for the Carnival and those who worked all or part of the 4 days at the Carnival itself. To all our Volunteers I offer a word of gratitude. And yet I cannot forget to thank in a special way Sabato Daniele and Sal Colak who are the co-chairs of the annual Parish Carnival. I cannot begin to describe the amount of time, effort and dedication by these two volunteers that make for the success of the Carnival. We have already begun planning for Carnival 2019. See you at the Carnival!! Let us pray for one another, 1

COLLECTIONS June 2-3 Weekly Collection $ 10,146 Envelopes Mailed 1,964 Envelopes Received 682 June 2-3 Diocesan Communication Collection $ 1,595 Bishop DiMarzio s Prayer for Vocation Lord of the Harvest, we petition you as you have instructed us to ask for more laborers to serve in the vineyard of your Church. You have told us that the harvest is rich and the laborers are few and we experience this great need in the face of the challenge of the New Evangelization. On June 16 and 17 there will be a SECOND COLLECTION for AIR CONDITIONING We ask the Holy Spirit to inspire young men and women to seriously consider vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Help all of us be effective instruments to encourage and support those whom you are calling to serve and lead the Church of Brooklyn and Queens in the future. Lord, you told your Apostles to put out into the deep. We ask for the grace and courage to accept your call as we pray and work for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life. We ask this in the Name of Jesus Christ the great High Priest, Amen. This is to keep our Church comfortable during the Summer. Thank you for your generous support. Thank you. I am pleased to report the ongoing success of the Annual Catholic Appeal. Due to the generous support of parishioners we have raised $69,100from 223 donors. Sincere thanks to those who have made a gift to the mission and ministry of the Diocese and Parish. Everything over goal comes back to the Parish providing much needed financial help. Yet 223 donors represents only a small percentage of registered parishioners. So - If you have not yet made your gift to the Appeal, do so now and add your name to those parishioners who have already responded. EVERY GIFT IS IMPORTANT INCLUDING YOURS. God bless you. Parish Goal: $100,580 As of 6/5/2018 Number of Pledges: 223 Pledged: $ 69,100 Received: $ 54,478 2018 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL PRAYER God and Father of all gifts, We praise you, the source of all we are. Teach us to acknowledge always with generous gratitude the many good things your infinite love has given us, as we support the work of our Diocese in Brooklyn and Queens. Open our hearts that we may answer your call to follow the message of the Gospel as disciples in love and service, so that all may come to know you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen 7

MEMORIALS ARE AVAILABLE TO GIVE IN MEMORY OR HONOR OF YOUR LOVED ONES Please call or visit the rectory if you would like to arrange for a memorial in memory or in honor of a loved one. The following memorials are available weekly. ALTAR BREAD ALTAR WINE SANCTUARY LAMP ALTAR CANDLES ALTAR FLOWERS The name of the person remembered will be printed in the bulletin.. ALTAR CARE The celebration of the Eucharist is at the center of parish life. We are a Eucharistic Community. Liturgical Ministers assist the priest and community in this celebration Lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ushers, Music Ministers, Altar Servers. Yet, we often overlook another important ministry which we are extremely grateful for those who care for the altar linens. Although not seen at the liturgy itself, these women keep the altar linens clean and worthy of use at the altar. They wash and iron linens and keep them in good condition. These dedicated women are always looking for volunteers. Their ministry is done at home, taking the soiled linens and returning them to the sacristy ready for use. Would you like to help this important ministry? Give the rectory a call and ask for Theresa. 8

Colorful Crayola Marker Math in Nusery! As a rainy afternoon activity, Mrs. Kenny s nursery class had so much fun adding and subtracting crayola markers to make shapes out of them! The teacher would ask questions like How many sides does a square have? Whichever children knew the answer were then asked to choose their colors and make a square using the markers. They each started with an 8 pack of markers, and had to take away or add the correct number of markers needed to make the shape. We also created triangles, rectangles, and even a pentagon after some trial and error! 12
