JUNE 16/17, 2012 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME My friends, Jesus wanted his disciples to understand the kingdom of God and described it using different images or parables. Today we hear two of those parables-the seed growing secretly and the mustard seed. Notice that in both parables, it is a human being who plants the seed, but God who is responsible for the seed s growth. We are not to take lightly our role in building the kingdom, nor are we to become discouraged. The kingdom of God develops in God s own time. THE READINGS EZEKIEL 17:22-24: It is God who makes the withered tree bloom. 2CORINTHIANS 5:6-10: We aspire to please the Lord in all circumstances. MARK 4:26-34: Parables of the kingdom. - SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2012 5::00 PM Mass Priest Fr. Peter Lector F. McCarthy E.M. s - C. Rozzi, L. Whelan, P. JUNE 16/17, 2012 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 11th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family, Our readings today remind us that the kingdom of God is a great mystery. Like the grain that mysteriously grows, sprouts, and yields fruit, and like the tiny mustard seed, so too the kingdom of God mysteriously grows in magnificence and greatness. In our first reading, the image of a majestic tree sheltering all the birds of heaven links today s First reading with one of the parables in Today s Gospel. In both cases, whether it be the tender shoot or the small mustard seed, the beginnings are small, the end result is majestic. STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection Like the sower in today s Gospel, I scatter as seed my gifts of time, talent and resources; and I trust that, by God s grace and in God s time, these small gifts of myself may grow and flourish and help to bring about the Kingdom of God. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who strive to be the good seed mentioned in the Gospel story and that their example inspires others to become good stewards, too! Parish Sacrificial Giving Summary Weekly goal for 6/10/12 - $7,800.00 Actual collection for 6/10/12 - $3,698.00 Faith Direct Weekly Donations - $750.00 In our second reading, St. Paul s words manifest a deep awareness of the ultimate purpose of life; to be at our heavenly home with the Lord. Our Gospel reading places emphasis in the mysterious growth of new life, even though we may be unaware of how it comes about. The life that comes to be is the Kingdom of God. It is humble, almost unnoticeable in the beginning yet results in a fruitful harvest with its abundant foliage giving shelter to all who would dwell in its shade. My brothers and sisters, we, through our many acts of love and kindness, are planting those mustard seeds, which by the grace of God and the workings of the Holy Spirit, will provide shelter for all those who seek it. Let us pray for one another for the grace to do good, to continue in our own small way in building God s Kingdom here on earth remembering that our acts will yield much fruit one day. To all our Fathers and men who are entrusted with the care and guidance of our young children, may you be blessed with wisdom and rewarded with the love of all that you care for, Happy Fathers Day.
