What a beautiful thing it is when we become aware that we are sinners. We find the mercy of God. God always forgives. Don t forget this. God always forgives. God s plan is to unite all humanity into one family where everyone recognizes he or she is a child of God, and loved by him. The Church is born from God s desire to call all people into communion with him, to share in his divine life. Catholics should pray that their parishes and the entire Church will increasingly be a family that lives and shares God s love and mercy. FAITH EXPRESSED THROUGH LOVE Galatians 5:6 May the Holy Spirit guide you in this and in all things. Give as God Has Given To You Generously According To Your Means Once you have analyzed your income and expenses and prepared a budget, place this issue in prayer before God. All are invited to give a portion of what they have been given. In the Bible, the portion offered to God is called a tithe. The tithe literally means a tenth actually, the first tenth. Today, the tithe, the portion given, usually represents 5% to the parish church and 5% to other worthy causes, such as Catholic Charities, special collections, etc. Each person should pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit in determining what portion to give. The First Fruits for God By planning ahead, one can make the portion offered truly the first portion the First Fruits for God rather than the Leftovers. The chart at right is a guide for offering a percentage. Annual Income A Guide for Offering a Tithe 1% Monthly Tithe 3% Monthly Tithe 5% Monthly Tithe $30,000 $25 $75 $125 $40,000 $34 $100 $167 $50,000 $42 $125 $209 $60,000 $50 $150 $250 $75,000 $63 $188 $313 $100,000 $84 $250 $417 $200,000 $167 $500 $834 $500,000 $417 $1,250 $2,084 $700,000 $584 $1,750 $2,917 Give as the L o r d h a s given to you, generously, according to your means. Faith expressed through love. Lord, accept the sacrifice from our hands for the praise and glory of your Name, for our good and for all your Church.

When these things begin to take place, stand erect and hold your heads high, because your liberation is at hand. Luke 21:28 The passages presented in this Sunday s readings from the book of Daniel and the Gospel of Mark are instances of apocalyptic writing, like we see in the book of Revelation, with symbolic, sometimes harsh, language. Apocalyptic writing was a standard and popular literary form during times of great persecution of the faith community first of Judaism, and then of Christianity. The purpose of apocalyptic writing was to give hope and encouragement to the faith community during times of great persecution and fear, assuring them that God will ultimately triumph over evil. In our day, as we seek to help build a society that respects human life, cares for the weak, stands in solidarity with the oppressed and the poor, we are called to remain firm in our faith in spite of opposition or persecution. What can make us stand up straight and raise our heads on the final day? Love. What casts out all fear? Love, says St. John in the 1 st Letter of John (4:18). Jesus doesn t want us to be fearful people. He said, Do not live in fear, little flock. It pleases your Father to give you the kingdom! It is no part of your heavenly Father s plan that a single one of his little ones shall ever come to grief. Jesus does not describe the end of the world, and when he uses apocalyptic images, he is not acting the prophet. On the contrary, he wants to give his disciples of every epoch the key to the right road to walk today and tomorrow to enter into eternal life. Pope Benedict XVI While we wait for the manifestation of Jesus in glory, we must also seek to be mindful that Jesus comes to us now, and is always present with us. He is present to us in his Word and in our sharing in the breaking of the Bread. He is present to us in every act of love that we receive from others, and in every act of love that we extend to others. God, who is Love, is present to us in every act of mercy, kindness, generosity, compassion and forgiveness. None of us loves perfectly, but the Word of God says, God s mercy endures forever. And, as Pope Francis reminded us, God s justice is his mercy. Thus, we joyfully await the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Be compassionate, as your heavenly Father is compassionate. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Luke 6:36-37 God s justice is HIS MERCY. His mercy endures forever.
