From St. James with Love Corner of Lake and Main P.O. Box 249 Hammondsport, New York 607.569.2647 October 2011 The Rev. Gary Edmister, Assistant 1.518.231.5209 The Rev. Sandra K. Curtis, Rector 607.569.2534 From Mother C You all know how much I love plants and gardens. One of my hobbies has become the division and growing of various plants. My mother had an awesome garden when I was growing up in Corning. People came from all over to see it. I never really appreciated her passion for growing and hybridizing plants until recent years, and now I understand why she loved to work in her garden. I always believed that if I touched a plant, I would kill it, but I have since learned that many beautiful plants are practically indestructible. If given the right conditions the plants will continue to flourish and produce absolutely beautiful flowers throughout the growing season. I began to take the garden seriously after I took a giant blue hosta up because it was entirely too large for the the space in which it was growing. The plant was enormous, and the root looked like a giant turnip over a foot wide. There were lots of thin roots coming out of that great gall, but what should I do with them. I was afraid I would kill the plant and lose it altogether. My mother assured me I wouldn t, that I could just cut it up in pieces, and it would make several new plants. There was no breaking it apart, so I finally got an ax and went to work. By the time I was done, I had nine large pots with hostas in them. I replanted a huge piece where I had taken the main plant out, used a couple more in other places, and then I began giving plants away. After each chunk of the original plant was separated and given room and the right conditions to grow, it began to grow into a beautiful hosta for all of us to enjoy. One plant led to another, and now I m at it all the time, planting and rearranging flowers throughout the garden. Here I go rambling about the garden again, but there is something that we should think about. If given the right conditions the plants will continue to flourish and produce absolutely beautiful flowers... As followers of Jesus Christ, given the right conditions, we can flourish and produce what God wants. What are the right conditions? We must place God first in our lives. Our worship of him is primary. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind. Add prayer to those right conditions. God does want to hear from us. If he knows the number of hairs on our heads, it is clear that he is interested in every detail of our lives. And, study the Bible in order to know what it is that God asks of us, teaches us, requires of us. If we worship him faithfully, pray faithfully, and study the Scripture faithfully, we will move closer and closer to the Lord, and he will guide and enrich our lives. Much love, Sandy+ (Mother C)

Mission Project Still in Need The Southeast District has decided to do another Mission Project that would be supported by the ten churches of the District. We normally have one project at a time, but this time, we couldn t decide on that one project. Instead, we have two. The first project is to help Haiti rebuild the cathedral that was destroyed in the earthquake. Some of us thought that was unnecessary when so many people need so much help, but the cathedral will stand tall and strong among so much suffering, and it is hoped that it will give hope to those who can go there to worship God. If you are willing to support the rebuilding of the cathedral, we suggest that you can purchase bricks for $10.00 each, and of course, you may purchase as many as you wish. The second project was to support Doctors Without Borders in their work in Haiti. This is a hands on project. Many from the medical field are willing to go to Haiti and volunteer their time and gifts to help those in need with free medical care. However, there are still many costs involved, especially for medical supplies. If you are willing to support Doctors Without Borders for Haiti, any gift would be greatly appreciated. In either case, if you wish to participate, make your check out to St. James and mark the memo Cathedral or Doctors Without Borders. Your gift will be added to those of others and sent to do the work you have supported. The people of St. James are incredibly generous in their giving. We recently received the following: To St. James Episcopal Church, Thank you for your gift and understanding in our behalf. May God richly Bless you and reward you here on earth and in Heaven. Sincerly, The Melvin M. Hershberger Sr. Family The Hershberger family of twelve children lost both parents in a tragic accident. BITS AND PIECES We need volunteers to help staff the nursery on Sundays when infants and toddlers are there so Lin is free to work with the Sunday School students. If many people are willing to volunteer-each person would only have to serve a few Sundays per year. We need new or gently used items for the Sunday School Treasure Box. Treasures are offered for birthdays, bringing a friend, memorizing a bible verse, as a welcome or farewell, etc. We could use a new supply of treasures if anyone would like to help.

SHOPPING ALERT!!: If you happen to see a sale on the following items while you are shopping---please consider buying some and donating them to the church. We are in need of: paper towels, kleenex, toilet tissue, paper napkins, kleenex, decaf and regular coffee, dish soap, and liquid hand soap. Donations of these items may be left in the kitchen.
