The Religious Education Staff Respect Life Mother s Day Carnations It is impossible to list what our mothers do for us each day. It is impossible to count the lessons learned from them. It is impossible to offer a "thank you" that is adequate for the love we have received from our moms. But we can try - thank you moms for giving us life, love and never ending care! To honor them, the Respect Life Committee will be offering carnations on Mother s Day weekend, May 12-13 after all the Masses. Your $1 donation will go toward the very worthwhile cause of supporting the educational work of Right to Life Lifespan, which does the vital work of promoting the sacredness and intrinsic value of all human life in all of its stages. We thank you in advance for your support! Please join us in prayer on the sidewalk outside Northland Family Planning abortion center on Friday mornings and First Saturdays. Page 8 The Good News - St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Troy 248-689-8380 All Things Catholic, By Fr. Greg Piatt Marian month is the Church s oldest monthly Devotion The Catholic Church honors the Blessed Mother during May for her relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and for her love and guidance she gives her earthly children. During this month, the Church focuses its devotion on the Mother of God in a tradition that can be traced back centuries. This is the oldest devotion in the Church that extends over an entire month. Now, the Church emphasizes the devotion in parishes, and families often celebrate the month with special pilgrimages, devotions and placing a crown on a Mary statue, which is traditionally called a May Crowning. This is the month in which, in the churches and individual homes, the most affectionate and fervent homage of prayers and devotions from the hearts of Christians are raised to Mary, Blessed Pope Paul VI wrote in his 1965 Encyclical: Month of May. It is also the month in which from His throne descend upon us the most generous and abundant gifts of the Divine Mercy. Catholics do not worship Mary. They venerate Mary and honor her motherly and queenly majesty. The Catechism of the Catholic Church calls Mary our model of faith and charity, and says a devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship. We never give more honor to Jesus than when we honor His Mother, and we honor her simply and solely to honor Him all the more perfectly, said St. Louis Marie de Montfort, the 17 th Century saint. To further how Catholics honor Mary, St. Maximilian Kolbe, the Franciscan martyr of Auschwitz said: Never be afraid of loving the Blessed Virgin too much. You can never love her more than Jesus did. Honoring Mary during May is traced to the 13th century and by the 16th century books fostered this devotion. The Marian month became popular in the 17 Century with the Jesuits, who spread it in Rome and then the whole Church. By the 19 th, the popes increased emphasis on the Marian month. Pope Leo XIII, whose papacy was from 1878-1903, wrote during the 1880s a number of papal encyclicals and apostolic letters on the value of the Rosary and the intercessory role of Mary. Throughout his encyclicals and letters he popularizes the month in the Church. Pope Pius XII in the mid-20 th Century promoted the Marian month, calling it an important exercise in piety. Then Pope Paul VI in the 1965 encyclical urged the faithful to make use of this practice. The person who encounters Mary cannot help but encounter Christ likewise, Pope Paul wrote. Pope St. John Paul II continued promoting this devotion during his papacy, calling the long-standing devotion a favorite, where parishes and familiesmake the month of May a Marian month, celebrating it with many devout liturgical, catechetical and pastoral initiatives. Pope Francis continues this devotion and has consecrated his papacy to Mary, under the title of Our Lady of Fatima. Furthermore, Pope Francis invites Christians to consecrate themselves to her tender, loving care. And May is a perfect month to do that. Marian feast days during May: Our Lady of Fatima-May 13, Mary Help of Christians-May 24 and the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary-May 31. And since Pentecost this year is May 20, we must not forget that Mary is the Mother of the Church. Marian devotion is important to the Church and there are 5 other monthly devotions connected with Mary: February- Holy Family, July- Immaculate Heart of Mary, September- Our Lady of Sorrows, October- the Rosary and December- the Immaculate Conception. He who neglects the service of the Blessed Virgin will die in his sins, said St. Bonaventure, Doctor of the Church. He who does not invoke thee, O Lady, will never get to HeavenNo one can be saved without the protection of Mary. To ask a question or comment, email Fr. Greg at: gpiatt@stanastasia.org
