GREENWOOD FOREST BAPTIST CHURCH The Worship of God The Fifth Sunday of Lent April 7, 2019 Chiming of the Hour Processional Hymn 303 Welcome to Worship All Who Hunger, Gather Gladly Rev. Lauren Efird Leader: The Lord be with you People: And also with you. Passing of the Peace Rev. Efird Preparation for Worship Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Noah James Oh soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There's light for a look at the Savior And life more abundant and free. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in his wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim In the light of his glory and grace. Through death into life everlasting, He passed and we follow him there; O'er us sin no more hath dominion For more than conquerors we are. His word shall not fail you, he promised, Believe him and all will be well; Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell.

Call to Worship (Psalm 126) Rev. Wesley Spears-Newsome Leader: When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, People: We were like those who dream. Leader: Then our mouth was filled with laughter, People: And our tongue with shouts of joy; Leader: Then it was said among the nations, People: The Lord has done great things for them. Leader: The Lord has done great things for us, People: And we rejoiced. Leader: Restore our fortunes, O Lord, People: Like the watercourses in the Negeb. Leader: May those who sow in tears People: Reap with shouts of joy. Leader: Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, People: Shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves. Invocation Hymn Rev. Spears-Newsome A Prophet-Woman Broke a Jar Offertory Prayer Rick Chappell Offertory Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior Mary McDonald

Presentation of the Offering As our offering is presented back to God, we will sing the following doxology: Praise God, who forms us from the dust. Praise Christ, who frees us through the cross. Praise Holy Ghost who drives us on To meet God in the wilderness. Amen. Prayers of the People and Lord s Prayer We affirm each prayer with the following response: Leader: Lord, in your mercy... People: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. OLD 100TH Rev. Stephen Stacks Scripture Reading Philippians 3:4b-14 Felice Parent We affirm the reading of Scripture with the following response: Reader: The word of God for us, the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. During the following hymn, children (ages first grade and younger) are invited to go to Children s Time. Parents may pick up their children in the Children s Wing after worship. Hymn 493 (v. 1, 3 & 4) Have Thine Own Way, Lord Scripture Reading John 12:1-8 Rev. Kadeisha Bonsu We affirm the reading of Scripture with the following response: Reader: The word of God for us, the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. Anthem Jesu, Priceless Treasure J.S. Bach Jesu, priceless treasure, Source of purest pleasure, Truest friend to me: Ah, how long I ve panted, And my heart hath fainted, Thirsting, Lord, for thee. Thine I am, O spotless Lamb, I will suffer nought to hide thee, Nought I ask beside thee! Hence, all fears and sadness, For the Lord of gladness, Jesu, enters in; They who love the Father Though the storms may gather, Still have peace within. Yea, whate er I here must bear, Still in thee lies purest pleasure, Jesu, priceless treasure!

Sermon Spilled Perfume Rev. Efird Hymn 613 I Love the Lord The Celebration of Communion Here at Greenwood Forest, we practice Communion by the ancient method of intinction. All are invited to come down the aisle to receive the elements. During Communion, a Minister or a Lay Leader will serve the elements from one of four stations in the sanctuary, two at the front and two at the back. You will be ushered toward one of the stations depending on where you are seated in the sanctuary. Please come in a mode of reception. You will be given a piece of bread that you dip in the cup and then partake. If you are unable to visit one of the stations, a server will bring the elements to you at your seat. If you do not wish to receive the elements, you may come receive a blessing simply indicate this desire verbally or by crossing your arms over your chest. A gluten-free bread option is available upon request. We hope you will join us at the table of the Lord where all are welcome. Benediction Postlude Please stand as you are able. The flowers are given today by Sally Shaver in celebration of the 100 th birthday of her mother, Mildred Shaver. The Deacon of the Day is Rick Chappell, Deacon At-Large. The pianist today is Addie Smith. Today s acolyte is Emily Nuss. Hearing assistance devices are available at the back of the sanctuary. Rev. Efird Prayer of Confession Merciful God, we confess that we have not always loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be obedient disciples. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we ve not loved our neighbors, and we ve not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us for what we have done and for what we ve left undone, and free us for joyful obedience through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Mystery of Faith Leader: Together we proclaim the mystery of faith. People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.
