Craig Dear Parishioners, This is the first Sunday of Lent. The season of Lent is a time of penance and conversion. The word actually means Springtime. It is 40 days and we await the celebration of Easter. This season asks us to pray, fast and to give alms. Let us use this time to grow deeper in relationship to our Lord. I will be using a little incense at the Masses that I will be celebrating during Lent. Some of you have shared how you miss its use in Church. I will use it in small amounts so that some with asthma won t have to leave the Church. Incense has been used in worship since before Jesus. It is mentioned in the bible. As the incense rises, so may our prayers rise to God. We will have the Monstrance on the altar before mass during Lent. Many people have never seen it. The word Monstrance means to show. It is the vessel used to show Jesus to the Church. We put the large host in it and we pray in front of our Lord. When you come into church please genuflect before going into the pew. You used to do a double genuflection on both knees but no longer need to do this. Only one knee is fine. I hope you find this to be a prayerful moment during Lent. We will have Stations of the Cross during Lent on Fridays at 5:30pm. Congratulations St Leo for reaching your goal for the Archbishop's annual appeal. We are part of the 116 parishes in the Archdiocese that reached their goal. Have a good week. Fr Craig Finding God in All Things On February 22nd at 7:00pm, our Finding God in All Things series continues as we welcome Doug Peterson, Attorney General of the State of Nebraska, who will speak on Human Trafficking in Nebraska. Good News from St. Pius X/St. Leo School We had a very exciting event following a prayer service for the 7th and 8th grade students the morning of February 13th at St. Pius X Church. We asked the students to remain in church for the awarding of scholarships by six Catholic high schools. Each high school had a representative(s) to present the scholarships to their school. The scholarships given out at this time were based solely on the results of the entrance exams taken at the school of choice a few weeks earlier. All of the parents of the students receiving scholarships were given calls from me prior to this day to come and see their child receive a scholarship. The scholarships awarded were the following: Marian High School Ellieana Green, Elizabeth Monzu and Meaghan Raabe; Creighton Prep John Burns, Jack Drew, Drew Jensen, Parker Mooney, Ethan Noon, Joshua Townley-Thomas and Will Wharton; Roncalli Catholic High School Tre Bridgeford; Mercy High School Josephine Romano, Danielle Stolze and Abby Wessling; Skutt Catholic High School Wistrom Herfordt; and Mt. Michael Michael Kult and Wyatt Walters. We had 17 scholarships, which is fantastic! We were very pleased with these scholarships as we have 87 students in 8th grade so 20% of the students received scholarships. Cory Sepich, Principal Thinking of sending your child to our school? If you have children in grades Pre-Kindergarten (3 year old program has a waiting list), 4 year olds to Grade 8 that you are thinking about sending to our school for the next school year, please call our school office at 402-551- 6667 to set up a time to come and visit or to come register your child/ren to attend St. Pius X/St. Leo. We can t wait to meet you! Lunch Menu M: No Lunch T: Taco Salad W: Chicken nuggets Th: Chili F: Grilled Cheese Laity in Liturgy First Sunday of Lent Lent is a time of deeper reflection. We fast, pray, give alms and attempt to understand the nature of sacrifice; Christ s sacrifice as well as how we can live sacrificially. Our history is full of beautiful art teeming with reflections as such. Each Sunday this season I will present you with one such reflection. This week to correspond with the first reading, the Rainbow by William Wordsworth... My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began; So is it now I am a man; So be it when I shall grow old, Or let me die! The Child is father of the Man; And I could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural piety. Drew Neneman Entrance Antiphon Cf. Ps 91 (90): 15-16 When he calls on me, I will answer him; I will deliver him and give him glory, I will grant him length of days. Communion Antiphon Mt 4: 4 One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. In Pursuit of Life, Love and Happiness By: Deacon Jim Shipman All of us can probably look back on our lives and recognize those moments when we were disobedient. We especially remember those moments when we disappointed a loved one by our disobedience. However, it is sometimes harder to recognize those times when we are disobedient to our God. God does not normally confront us verbally or send us to our room, but God sends us His Holy Spirit to teach us the difference between being good or bad, being righteous or disobedient. When we hear that little voice in our head, our conscious, telling us we did something wrong, that is our Lord s Spirit speaking to us. In our first reading God made a covenant with Noah and his decedents that He would never allow a flood to totally devastate the earth again. God allowed the flood to happen because of mans disobedience. Over and over again our God calls his people, that s us, to do His will and follow His precepts. When we do not listen and do not follow God s will, we are like disobedient children. This is what our Church calls SIN. The Gospel, the good news, is that Jesus came so that we could be forgiven of our disobedience. Our Lord Jesus came to make a new covenant with his people. Today Jesus begins that ministry and gives us the first steps to obedience. He said, "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." As Lent begins, we all need listen to the Holy Spirit, and follow the right path to our Lord Jesus. St. Leo Knights of Columbus Michael Yakus completed his Knights Orientation. Congratulations, Mike.
