Beth Meyer Synagogue Online Aliyah Auction 2017 Each year, Beth Meyer makes available a number of honors and aliyot that take place during the High Holy Days (Yamim Noraim) services. This is a wonderful way to honor teachers, friends and family members while making a contribution to Beth Meyer. All bidding will take place online. There is a Buy Now price for every honor. Unless purchased for the Buy Now price, every honor will remain available until the conclusion of the auction. The highest bidders will be automatically notified at the close of the auction. Bidding begins on all honors and aliyot on Monday, July 24 and concludes on August 17. Join Rabbi Jenny Solomon for a workshop in prayerful music. The goals of the workshop are to introduce new melodies for increased participation/engagement in weekly Shabbat and Rosh Hashanah/ Yom Kippur services teach harmonies to new and newer melodies to more fully express the beauty of the prayers create prayer/music together simply for simha shel mitzvah (the joy of the mitzvah)! Each person must have a ticket issued to them in their own name. (except for college students and active military with appropriate ID) For security purposes and to ensure adequate seating for congregants, every adult will need a ticket to attend Yamim Noraim services. Tickets will be checked at the door to gain entry to the synagogue. Tickets may be obtained as follows: Each congregant in good financial standing* will be mailed a ticket for this year s services. Tickets are for adult congregants - children and students through college age may accompany their parents without a ticket. Students in non-congregant families, with student IDs, do not need tickets. Active military personnel, with military IDs, do not need tickets. Reciprocal tickets at no cost may be obtained by guests who are members of an out-of-town synagogue where they have already paid for tickets or tickets are included in their membership dues and by providing Beth Meyer with a letter of good financial standing from their home synagogue. Our reciprocal policy cannot be extended to members of other local synagogues. Tickets for out-of-town family members of congregants who are not members of another synagogue may be purchased at a cost of $100.00 per ticket. These community guest tickets will provide access to participate in all Yamim Noraim services. 5778 (2017) Yamim Noraim Super Dues Program Our Super Dues program has proven to be a successful fundraiser for Beth Meyer Synagogue and has helped provide the funds to support congregants with financial difficulties and those on reduced dues. Participation in the Super Dues program entitles a congregant to reserve the following: A seat in the sanctuary for a contribution of $150. A seat in the sanctuary annex for a contribution of $100. A seat in the social hall for a contribution of $100. A reserved parking space for a contribution of $150. There are a limited number of super dues seats and parking spaces available and the requests now outnumber the availability. Sanctuary seats are limited to 100. Parking spaces will be limited to two spaces per member family. Please note, we are unable to guarantee exactly where your seat will be located in the room that you have chosen. There are not enough aisle seats to meet all requests. We may be unable to seat you where you have sat previously. Extra handicapped parking spaces will be added and designated for handicapped parking, ensuring that those congregants who need closer access to the building will have it. The handicapped spaces are available to everyone with a State-issued permit and cannot be reserved. Any congregant paying full dues and in good financial standing is eligible to participate in the Super Dues program. Please use the form on page 15 of this booklet or pick up a form from the synagogue office if you wish to participate in our Super Dues program. One of the most beautiful and powerful rituals of the Yamim Noraim season is Tashlikh. Tashlikh, literally translates as you shall cast, and is a word used by the prophet Micah when he calls upon the Jewish community to cast their sins upon the water. Metaphorically, Micah was imploring the people to cleanse themselves of their mistakes and to repent. A more visual way to cast off our misdeeds, this Rosh Hashanah afternoon ritual is great for the whole family. We ll walk about a half-mile from the shul (on a paved trail, stroller and wheelchair accessible); bring comfy shoes, some old bread or crackers. Bimah Flower Sponsorship Honorable Mensch ens Sponsor the bimah flowers during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to honor or remember a loved one or celebrate a special occasion. KEVER AVOT Traditional Cemetery Service at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery Sunday, September 24, 10:30 a.m. Death is the end of a life, but not the end of a relationship. Even after a person s soul has left this world, many of us find ourselves still yearning to share our lives with that loved one. Our tradition beautifully recognizes this need through the ritual of kever avot. During the ten days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it is an especially meaningful time to visit the cemetery, share our prayers for the upcoming year, and reflect on the lives of our deceased relatives and friends regardless of where they are buried. Please join us on Sunday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. at the Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery, as we partake in a ritual of remembrance. Although nothing can replace a memory fixed within a broken or mended heart, historians have had great success in reconstructing genealogies by simple means of Yizkor Bicher (memorial books). These books preserve, in a tangible and widely distributed form, the web of connections between people whose names and acquaintances might otherwise be lost to the tide of history. We at Beth Meyer Synagogue are preparing to publish the Book of Remembrance to be held and cherished by all who worship at the Study Sessions 2:00 5:00 p.m. Minhah 5:45 p.m. Neilah Service 6:45 p.m. Teki-at Hashofar 7:40 p.m. Yom Kippur Yizkor service, and again throughout the year at Shmini Atzeret, Pesah and Shavuot. This book reverently keeps before us the names of our departed loved ones and is a symbol of our love. Should you have loved ones you wish to memorialize, kindly complete the information on the form on page 9. Please include $5.00 per name of each loved one you wish to remember. The names memorialized on the plaques in the Beth Meyer sanctuary will automatically be included in the Book of Remembrance. Children Lead the Way in the Neilah Service! Shabbat, September 30 Shoah Speaker Shabbat, September 30, 12:30 p.m. (approx.) This Yom Kippur, we will invite Holocaust survivor and Beth Meyer member, Morris Glass, to share his personal experiences during the Holocaust. Please note that Mr. Glass will offer his words shortly after the conclusion of the Yizkor service. Since many congregants honor their living parents by leaving the sanctuary for Yizkor, all are urged to return back to services so that this powerful moment will not be missed. You can be assured that Mr. Glass words will give you much to reflect upon during Yom Kippur and throughout the year. All children are welcome to participate in the Neilah service at the end of Yom Kippur. We will gather in the library starting at 6:00 p.m. but they must be at Beth Meyer no later than 6:30 p.m. in order to participate (the shofar will be blown at 7:40 p.m.). All children should wear a white shirt and dark slacks/skirt. Each child will carry a batterypowered candle or glow stick. Children under 3 need to be accompanied by a parent. Once again, this year, Beth Meyer will provide lulav and etrog sets for congregants to purchase. At Sukkot morning services, we will have the opportunity to raise the lulav and etrog and shake them in the six directions of the world, a powerful and spiritually-fulfilling practice. Even if you will not be able to attend Sukkot services, you are still encouraged to purchase a set so that you can wave them while at your home. USY Sukkah Build Sunday, October 1 Beth Meyer high school students are invited to join us as we help one of our families build their sukkah. Come ready to construct and eat. Kadima Dinner Wednesday, October 4 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. The first of our monthly Kadima dinners will be in the sukkah on Wednesday after religious school. Cost is $5. Beth Meyer Synagogue Youth Programs for the Yamim Noraim 2017/5778 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.* Registration deadline is Sunday, August 27, 2017 < 3 years old (lower level of the main building): There is a supervised child care room for our infants and toddlers. This program is on the lower level of the main building. 3 years old - 1 st grade (Satisky building): There is a Family Service in the Beit Am and supervised play time. The Family Service meets from 10:15-11:00. Please note: children need to be accompanied by a parent at the family service. 2 nd grade 5 th grade (Satisky building): There is a Youth Service in the Beit Am and supervised time for holiday-appropriate activities. The Youth Service meets from 11:00-11:45. Please note: Parents are welcome, but not required, to join us for the youth service. Middle School (Chapel in the main building): The middle school program meets from 11:00 12:30. It includes an opportunity for discussion and some holiday-appropriate activities.
